(Celebrating ‘Saawan’-2025-1)
The holiest month of saawan is being observed all over our country now. It started with the poornimaa on 11th of this month. It is being observed in North India for two weeks weeks now. From the amaavasyaa on 24th of this month, it is being observed in the southern parts of the country (including parts of west and central India).
Most of the country has been blessed with good monsoon this time. These rains bring cheers as well as relief from summer. One begins to witness greenery all around in this month of saawan. Moreover festivals begin to be celebraated from this season onwards. It is generally said that teej-tyohaar get started from the month of saawan. Teej was celebrated in parts of country yesterday and day before yesterday (if I am correct).
The month of “Saawan” is important for many reasons.
The month of “Saawan” is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The month of “Saawan” is also an important month for nature lovers as they can watch natural beauty at its best during this month.
For religious minded persons, this month offers the opportunity to cleanse onself spiritually.
This is also the month when important human relationships are celebrated. For brother-sister relationship, there is the festival of rakshaabandhan, whereas the month is important for married women who pray for the long life of their husbands in the “teej” festival mentioned earlier.
In western tradition, Valentine day falls on 14 february whereas in India the entire season of “Saawan” is dedicated to lovers. This included lovers who are separated from each other and long to meet each other in this saawan season.
Naturally, Hindi films are full of songs that deal with “Saawan”. We already have over a hundred songs in the category of ‘saawan songs’ posted on the blog. I am looking for “Saawan” songs that are yet to make it to the blog.
I propose to celebrate ‘saawan-2025’ by covering some “Saawan” songs.
Today I am presenting a song from a movie of 1947. The song is about a married girl missing her maikaa and requesting her mother to send her father, brother or uncle who could take her to home so that she can enjoy the saawan there in her maikaa. This song is from the movie ‘Beete Din-1947’.
“Beete Din-1947” was directed by Ezra Meer for ‘Aawaaz Film Corporation, Bombay’. It was a movie from the ‘genre’ of ‘social movies’. It had Vanmala, Motilal, Sheela, S. Nazeer, Miss Rekha, L. Ramesh, Baby Shyama, Master Lakshman, Solanki, Bibibai, Baby Janet and others. This movie has nine songs as mentioned in Geet Kosh Vol-II. The lyricists for this movie are Pandit Faani and H. Tanvir. Music is composed by M.A. Rauf (four songs) and A. Dinkar Rao (four songs). Music composer’s name for one song is not mentioned separately in Geet Kosh. Ameerbai, Mukesh, Zohrabai, Sheela, and Sajan are the singers mentioned for this movie. Three songs from this movie have already been posted on the blog earlier.
Today I am presenting the fourth song from this movie. As mentioned in the addenda and corrigenda in Geet Kosh Vol-II (1941-1950) the lyrics for the todays are by Ameer Khusro. The name of the composer for this song as well as the name of the singers for this song is not mentioned in the Geet Kosh. However one of the audio links of this song mentions the name of the singers as Sheela Mitra and Ameerbai Karnataki and I have taken the same from there. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs please. The composer name for this song is not mentioned specifically in HFGK.
