#The Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #

Yesterday the festival of Naag Panchamee was celebrated all over the country. I read that the tithhee of Naag Panchamee falls on both days viz 29th and 30th July. However the auspicious (mahurat) timings for the offering the prayers was yesterday only, and that too was for just couple of hours. Initially I was looking for a song from the older movies which could be fit for the occasion, however due to changed priorities, I could not share a post yesterday. Before I could finalise a song I came across an article on internet which was about the vanished genres of film stories in recent years. Till the decade of seventies many movies were still made with mythological stories and the films about snakes and ichchhaadhaaree naag or naagin were being made in those decades. Even in the eighties we had films like ‘Naginaa-1986’, ‘Nagin Aur Nagina-1988’(dubbed movie), ‘Nigaahen-1989’, ‘Doodh Kaa Karz-1990’, ‘Tum Mere Ho-1990’ etc.
However, after that films with such stories have been drastically reduced. Genre of snake movies have vanished by now. Knowledgeable readers can update me if I am missing some recent movies in this genre.
On the other hand, if we look back for films made in the decades of fifties or sixties we have lots of movies having ‘naag’ in their titles. amlost all these movies have been represented in the blog and some of these movies have even been YIPPEED in the blog.
Just today we got introduced to a movie titled ‘Naag Lok’ from the year 1957 on the blog. If we look at the titles with ‘naag’ in them on the blog so far, we have the following list. (I have not considered movies with ‘snake stories’ having other titles in this list).

(I have tried to note down the list year wise and hope that I have noted all the titles available on the blog having ‘naag’ in their title).
So, yesterday, when I was looking for a song for ‘naag raajaa’ I was reminded of this song from the 1984 movie ‘Maqsad’. It is a movie which I had watched at Akola and I didn’t like because of its ‘masaalaa’, and the role played by Rajesh Khanna which didn’t suit him.
Moreover most songs of this movie (except one more song),are such that they may not make it to the blog in my opinion. The song under discussion is an exception as it is a nice composition.
‘Maqsad-1984’ was directed by K. Bapaiah for ‘Suresh Productions, Madras’. It was produced by D. Ramanaidu. The cast of this movie has Jeetendra, Rajesh Khanna, Jayaprada, Sridevi, Shakti Kapoor, Ranjeet, Prem Chopra, Dr Shreeram Lagoo, Amjad Khan, Asrani, Shatrughan Sinha, Padma Chavan, Waheeda Rehman, Kader Khan and others. This movie was passed by the Censor Board on 30.04.1984. ‘Maqsad’ has six songs composed by Bappi Lahiri and penned by Indeevar. Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle and S. Janaki were the singers for this movie. Sources mention that this movie was a remake of a successful ‘Telugu’ movie ‘Mundadugu-1983’.
Today I am presenting the first song from this movie which is sung by Kishore Kumar. Rajesh Khanna and Jeetendra both lip sync the song in Kishore Kumar’s voice. Sources on internet mention that Bappi Lahiri mixed two separate vocal tracks for this song where singer for both the actors is same which is Kishore Kumar.
Sridevi and Jayaprada are also seen performing naagin dance on this song. The two female actors didn’t get to sing but they have given anenergetic performance on this song (which I guess was shot in one take only?). Both Sridevi and Jayaprada displayed their dancing skills in this song. Others present in the picturisation of this song include Prem Chopra, Ranjeet, Kader Khan etc.
Let us now listen to this song … I do not recollect the story of this movie and the context of this song now. But it is clear that the Naag raajaa is the rakshak of the dhan lying hidden in the basement of the temple and he is going to punish whoever intends to cast an evil eye on this treasure.
