Hullo Atuldom

July 29th was the 22nd death anniversary (already that many years!!) of the actor Johnny Walker who was much adored as a comedian. The characters that he typically played were of “Drunkards” & he excelled at them, inspite of not touching a drop of alcohol throughout his life.

He was born Badruddin Jamaluddin Kazi in Indore, in present-day Madhya Pradesh. He was part of a family, that had 12 children, which moved to Bombay (of those times) when his father lost his job. He got a job as a bus-conductor in Bombay Electric Supply & Transport (BEST- Bombay’s bus service). He was spotted by actor Balraj Sahni entertaining his passengers with his comical way of calling out bus stops and his hilarious impressions and antics. Balraj Sahni introduced this fan of Noor Mohammed Charlie to Guru Dutt. Balraj Sahni told Kazi to demonstrate his drunkard act to Guru Dutt. From that meeting, he gained a role in ‘Baazi’ (1951).

It was Guru Dutt who gave him the name of Johnny Walker, a reference to the brand of Scotch whisky, when he was inspired by Kazi’s display in the role of a drunkard. Thereafter, Walker appeared in all but one of Dutt’s movies and the director encouraged him to ad-lib and to draw on his varied life experiences; how can anyone forget the ‘maalish tel maalish champi’ part of the ever popular song ‘sar jo teraa chakaraaye, yaa dil doobaa jaaye’ from “Pyaasaa” which was the forerunner of many such songs where we could hear the actor’s voice.

He was primarily an actor of comedy roles who also attempted to portray heroic personae in the eponymous ‘Johnny Walker’ and ‘Mr. Qartoon MA’ which were not successful. His heydays were in the 1950s and 1960s but his later career was affected by the death of Dutt, who had greatly influenced it, in 1964. He worked with directors such as Bimal Roy and Vijay Anand but his career faded in the 1980s. He was unwilling to adopt the cruder form of comedy that almost became a rule & comedy had become hostage to vulgarity (in his opinion).

His final film came after an absence of 14 years when he took a role in a remake of ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ titled ‘Chachi 420’ (1997) with Kamal Haasan in the lead. He is said to have appeared in about 300 films with about 12 of them (including ‘Chachi 420’) releasing in the period from 1980 to 1997. He is also said to have written and directed the 1985 ‘Pahunche Huwey Log’ which had Rishi Kapoor, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Amjad Khan etc. in the cast, of course I don’t know the fate of that film. He was not part of the acting cast.

Since I began writing this post I have been humming ‘jaane kahaan mera jigar gaya ji’, ‘jungle mein mor naacha’ and some more Johnny Walker songs. So I just ran a query on google to find the number of songs that Mohd. Rafi had sung for this actor with a great comic timing. I got a figure of 145 from the search engine. I checked up the blog and found that the blog has 138 Johnny Walker songs, but was unable to figure out how many of these are songs sung by Mohd. Rafi; also I don’t know if any other singer had ever given playback for Johnny Walker.

My next step was I went through the list of songs that I found on a wordpress blog which gave me a list of the 145 songs which Mr Nikhil Iyer has painstakingly compiled. Here I would like to mention that, this Mr. Nikhil Iyer is a follower of our blog & its Facebook Page as also friends with many ATULITES on Facebook and a very young man (if I may add). I have known him for close to 25 years without knowing that he had an ear for music from old films. But then, thinking back, there is no way for me to know about this facet of Mr. Iyer who was a school kid when I knew him. Thank you Nikhil for your blog & sorry for giving a link to your blog here, without your permission.

Coming to today’s song, it is from a film that made its debut on the blog in 2010. It had seven songs of which the blog has the following four.

Song Date of posting Remarks
Aate hi jawaani ka mausam 6 May 2010
Deewaana kahke mujhe phir pukaaariye 30 July 2010
Sang sang rahenge tumhaaare jee huzoor 12 November 2011
Kunwa paas tu phir bhee pyaasa 6 May 2020 (part of BTYC 2010-2020)

The film “Mulzim” (1963) was produced & directed by N.A. Ansari, had music by Ravi & lyrics by Shakeel Badayuni. Mohd Rafi & Asha Bhonsle were the only playback singers used. Its cast was headed by Pradeep Kumar, Shakila, Helen, Johnny Walker, Anwar Hussain, Mumtaz Begum, Neelofar, Nasreen, Champak, Uma Dutt, Sagar, Ratan Gaurang and N.A. Ansari himself. Various sites online have categorised this film as ‘Drama’ & ‘Crime’ and that is all I know about it. But considering that this was a film by Ansari, I am sure that the movie would have had many “shadows lurking in the alleys”. I am sure that there will be some Atulite who will be able to enlighten us as to the contents of the film.

With today’s song we are remembering two greats who gave us a lot of entertaining songs.

The second great is the voice behind the song- Mohd Rafi. The voice which was super melodious and used for fast, peppy numbers to patriotic songs, sad numbers to highly romantic songs, qawwalis to ghazals and bhajans to classical songs. A voice that made the career of every actor on whom it was used. A voice that was voted ‘Greatest Voice in Hindi Cinema in a CNN-IBN poll’ in 2013 (33 years after he left this mortal world).

Rafisaab’s voice was used in as many as 7,000 songs throughout his career, spanning several languages such as Konkani, Assamese, Bhojpuri, Odia, Bengali, Marathi, Sindhi, Kannada, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Magahi, Maithili, etc. Apart from Indian languages, he also sang in some foreign languages, including English, Persian, Arabic, Sinhala, Mauritian Creole, and Dutch.

Speaking only of Hindi films, his first song came in a film in 1945 & last recorded song was for “Aas Paas” in 1980. Of course, I found “phool ka shabaab kya husn-e-maahtaab kya” in a film released in 1989, which was recorded sometime in 1980 before his death, so that must be Rafisaab’s last released song. We can find that song in this post.

As I have mentioned above, Rafisaab gave his voice for 145 songs of Johnny Walker. But the maximum he had sung was for Shammi Kapoor- 190 songs.

In this Qawwali, we see Pradeep Kumar entering the mehfil just as the song is starting. He finds himself place in the first row beside some beauties including Shakila. I think it is Master Anwar next to Johnny Walker on the stage & we can see that one of the ladies is jealous of Shakila who has the handsome hero next to her.

This song is an example of Johnny Walker living in Mohd Rafi’s voice.

Chorus

Lyrics

arre o aane waalon
husn kee rangeen mahfil mein
khushee se muskuraao tum
magar ye soch lo dil mein
kya
yahee to
ke ishq waalon pe zamaane kee nazar hotee hai
ishq waalon pe zamaane kee nazar hotee hai
ishq waalon pe zamaane kee nazar hotee hai

ishq waalon pe zamaane kee nazar hotee hai ae ae ae
dil dhadakta hai
haaye haaye
ho dil dhadakta hai
to duniya ko khabar hotee hai
dil dhadakta hai
to duniya ko khabar hotee hai
ishq waalon pe zamaane kee nazar hotee hai

husn aur ishq ka anjaam khuda khair karey
husn aur ishq ka anjaam khuda khair karey
aaj takraaye hain do jaam khuda khair karey
aaj takraaye hain do jaam khuda khair karey
aashiqui josh mein hai
bekhudee hosh mein hai
ishq majboor naheen
husn bhee door naheen

aarzuen hain jawaan
dil se uthhta hai dhuaan
chot sahte na baney
munh se kahte na baney
aaj hai gar ye nasha
jaane kal rang ho kya
aaj hai gar ye nasha
jaane kal rang ho kya
isee liye to kaha hai
husn aur ishq ka anjaam khuda khair karey
husn aur ishq ka anjaam khuda khair karey
aaj takraaye hain do jaam khuda khair karey
aaj takraaye hain do jaam khuda khair karey
lekin dekhna ye hai
aaj takraaye hai do jaam khuda khair karey
dekhna ye hai
ke aawaz kidhar hotee hai
dekhna ye hai ke aawaz kidhar hotee hai
dil dhadakta hai to dunya ko khabar hotee hai
ishq waalon pe zamaane kee nazar hotee hai
ishq waalon pe zamaane kee nazar hotee hai

khel samjhe na koi dil ko lagaa kar jeena
khel samjhe na koi dil ko lagaa kar jeena
gham ke sholon se salaamat naheen rahta seena
gham ke sholon se salaamat naheen rahta seena
pyaar ik aag bhee hai
rang bhee raag bhee hai
raas aata hai kaheen
dil jalaata hai kaheen
dil mein himmat hai agar
phir hai kis baat ka dar
kaarwaan yoonhee chaley
koi jalta hai jaley
jalne waalon ko yahaan dil kee pehchaan kahaan
ho jalne waalon ko yahaan dil kee pehchaan kahaan
iseeliye to kaha hai
khel samjhe na koi dil ko lagaa kar jeena
khel samjhe na koi dil ko lagaa kar jeena
gham ke sholon se salaamat naheen rahta seena
gham ke sholon se salaamat naheen rahta seena
huzoor
sach to ye hai
ke ishq mein zindagee
gham ke sholon se salaamat naheen rahta seena
ishq mein zindagee jal jal ke basar hotee hai
ishq mein zindagee jal jal ke basar hotee hai
dil dhadakta hai
to duniya ko khabar hotee hai

ishq waalon pe zamaane kee nazar hotee hai
ishq waalon pe zamaane kee nazar hotee hai

aankhon aankhon mein jo ulfat kee kasam khaate hain
aankhon aankhon mein jo ulfat kee kasam khaate hain
aa aa aa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa
aankhon aankhon mein jo ulfat kee kasam khaate hain
waakai unke muqaddar bhee chamak jaate hain
waakai unke muqaddar bhee chamak jaate hain
in bahaaron kee kasam
in nazaaron kee kasam
husn qaatil hee sahee
pyaar mushqil hee sahee
aa aa aa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa aaa aaa

phir bhee ik baat to hai
ik mulaakaat to hai
jazba-e-dil ki kasam
rang-e-mahfil ki kasam
aa aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aaa aaa

mujhko pehchaan hai ye
mera imaan hai ye
mujhko pehchaan hai ye
mera imaan hai ye
kya
aankhon aankhon mein jo ulfat kee kasam khaate hain
aankhon aankhon mein jo ulfat kee kasam khaate hain
waakai unke muqaddar bhee chamak jaate hain
waakai unke muqaddar bhee chamak jaate hain
waakai unke muqaddar bhee chamak jaate hain
kyonke
ishq par chaand sitaaron kee nazar hotee hai
ishq par chaand sitaaron kee nazar hotee hai
dil dhadakta hai
to duniya ko khabar hotee hai

ishq waalon pe zamaane kee nazar hotee hai

Nalini ji,

Just to set the record straight, CHACHI 420 was the remake of AVVAI SHANMUGHI, Tamil, 1996, which, of course, was the adaptation of MRS DOUBTFIRE, 1993, adapted from the novel Madame Doubtfire, 1987.
