Today’s song is from the film Stage-1951.

The film was produced by J.D.Chandana and directed by young Vijay Mhatre. Music was by 2 MDs. Husnlal-Bhagatram composed 5 songs and Sardar Malik composed 7 songs. After 5 songs, Husnlal-Bhagatram left the film, fed up by the frequent interference of the director in their work. Sardar Malik was invited to complete the music of the film.

Sardar Malik today is a lesser known composer compared to other giants of the film industry, but he has created some golden melodies.

Born on 13-1- 1925, Sardar Malik had learnt classical music from Ustad Alauddin Khan. He also learned a variety of dancing skills from Pt.Uday Shankar. Some other stars like Guru Dutt and Mohan Sehgal too were part of the troop under Pt. Uday Shankar, same time.

Sardar Malik got his break as a Music Director in a movie called ‘Renuka’ which was released in 1947. Sardar Malik also sang 4 songs in this movie – 2 solo songs and also 2 duets with Zohrabai. But the movie was not a big success and he remained unrecognized. In the same year, he also composed music for a movie ‘Rain Basera’, but that movie too was not successful. In 1949, only one movie was released of Sardar Malik and that was ‘Raaz’. The movie had some wonderful numbers from Rafi, Amirbai and Binapani Mukherjee.

In 1951, Sardar Malik shared the credits with Husnlal Bhagatram and composed a few songs for a movie ‘Stage’, which had lovely numbers sung by Asha Bhosle like ‘Dil Machalne Laga’. Asha Bhosle had excellent control in her voice in the early 50s and her association with Sardar Malik was very special in this era when Lata and Geeta Dutt were at the top.

His next movie was ‘Laila Majnu’ which was a huge success. Sardar Malik composed only 3 songs for this movie ‘Baharon Ki Duniya Pukare’, ‘Tere Dar Pe Aaya Hoon’ and ‘Dekh Li Ae Ishq’. All the other songs were composed by Ghulam Mohammed but the songs showed his versatility and he gained recognition in the film industry. Thokar (1953) established Sardar Malik as a successful composer. Songs like ‘Ae Gham-e-Dil Kya Karoon’ by Talat and Asha Bhosle and ‘Hawa Ghungunayee Fiza Muskayee’ are evergreen numbers.

‘Aulad’ (1954) showed Sardar Malik’s overall class through his magical compositions. This movie had some great numbers like ‘Duniya Tasveer Ha’i (Talat Mahmood) and ‘Tum Salamat Raho Hazar Baras’ (Asha). The same year saw the release of ‘Chor Bazar’ (1954), which had some of the best songs rendered by Lata Mangeshkar. She sang 3 beautiful songs in this movie ‘Chalta Rahe Yeh Karvan’, ‘Huyi Yeh Humse Ye Nadani’ and ‘Dar Dar Ki Thokare Hain’.

In the mid-50’s Sardar Malik composed music for a few movies like Ab-e-Hayat-55, Taxi-555-58, Chamak Chandni-57 and Maa Ke Aansoo-59. All these movies had some nice songs. If we observe the decade of the 50s, Asha Bhosle, Talat Mahmood and Rafi sang some of the best songs of Sardar Malik.

The decade of 60’s saw the release of ‘Saranga’ (1960), which can be considered as one of the best movies of Indian Cinema. The title song of the movie sung by Mukesh and the sad version of the same sung by Rafi is still as popular as it was 60 yrs ago. Many veteran music composers consider this movie as the best movie composed by Sardar Malik ever. The same year saw the release of ‘Mera Ghar Mere Bachche’ which contained some great songs sung by Mukesh, my favorite song being the duet of Mukesh with Suman Kalyanpur ‘Baharon Se Poochho’.

Sardar Malik remained active in the first half of the 1960s and composed some outstanding music for second rung movies like Madan Manjari, Bachpan, Pick Pocket, Naag Mohini, Jantar Mantar, Maharani Padmini, Roop Sundari and Main Hoon Jadugar. It was destiny that most of the films he composed for were not box-office successes, but he never compromised on the quality of his music. His career appears to come to an abrupt halt in the mid-60s. The last movie of Sardar Malik was Gynaaniji which was released in 1977. This movie had songs sung by Rafi, Asha, Jaspal Singh and Jagat Singh Jagga. After this he gave music to one film in which all his family was working- Nigahain-1983. He even wrote a few songs for this film.

Sardar Malik gave music to 25 films, composing 199 songs. He sang 8 songs in 2 films-Renuka-47 and Raaz-49. Sardar Malik had huge knowledge on all forms of Indian Music. He always depended on light background orchestration in many of his songs. He made the use of accordion and flute in many of his songs. As he was classically trained, he had excellent knowledge on various ragas too.

Married to noted lyricist Hasrat Jaipuri’s sister, Kausar Jahan (Bilqis), Sardar Malik had three sons – Annu, Abbu and Dabbu Malik. Thanks to his father’s blessings, Annu Malik met with a lot of success in the 1990s and 2000s. Sardar Malik passed away on January 27th 2006, but the legacy he has left behind will always remain with us.

Stage-1951 was a social film having a cast of Ramola, Dev Anand, Kuldeep Kaur, Sunder, Mubarak, Gulab, Cuckoo, Ramsing and others. In 1951, dev anand was not yet that famous or popular. He had done 18 films by then, but none of his films were Hits or well known. Some films like Vidya-48, Ziddi-48,Jeet-49, Namoona-49, Shair-49, Afsar-50, Nirala-50 and Araam-50 were popular either due to the heroines or the film’s songs. On his own, only films like Patita-53 and Taxi Driver-54 became noteworthy and his graph started upwards.

In the film Stage-51, his Heroine Ramola was much senior to him, having started acting in 1937. This was Ramola’s 25th film and also her last Hindi film as an actress. That is why in the credits, her name came first. By this time she was already 34 year old, while Dev Anand was just 28 year old.

Actress Ramola (real name- Rachel Cohen) was born in a Jew family on 5-7-1917, at Bombay. Her father Hayam Cohem was a school Teacher. Her initial education was done in Bombay. Later they shifted to Calcutta where she completed her matriculation and joined films. Her first film was ‘ Graher fer’-38,a Bangla film. She did a few small roles and then came ‘Khazanchi’-41 from Pancholi of Lahore. This changed her career and she became a popular actress. She did films like Masoom,Khamoshi manchali.etc etc.

Initially, Ramola was a small time actress. First she acted on stage along with her two sisters. Then she got a Bangla film. It was Jagdish Sethi who introduced her to director/lyricist/dialogue writer Kidar Sharma. According to Kidar Sharma,

“She was smart and a charming young lady. Her only drawback was her height. She was not tall, just about 5 feet, but she had lofty ambitions. One day she came to see me and I promised I would personally take her to the director of her choice. She said, “I would like to be introduced to Mr. Nitin Bose, and no one else.” I took her to Mr. Bose, and was sure that her charm and talent would impress him.

Mr. Bose scanned her, from top to toe, while I praised her talent and her choice of a director, like Nitin Bose. After a long silence, Mr. Bose addressed me and said, “When you brought her to me, why did you forget to bring some bricks for her to stand on?” Poor Romola was hurt and heart-broken by this great director’s caustic remark. She quietly said, “Goodbye” and walked away from his office.

I followed her and found that she was in tears. ‘I was moved by the plight of a struggling youngster having high hopes, being ridiculed for something which nature was responsible for. I knew what it felt like to be ridiculed. I had experienced it often enough. I escorted her to the tram junction and there she bid me goodbye. To encourage her, I said, “Please, Romola, don’t be heart-broken. One day, when I become a director, you will be my first heroine, and we will prove to Mr. Bose and the world, what a great star you are.” Romola laughed and said,- “Poor Mr. Kidarnath, the dialogue-writer will never be a director and I will never be a heroine.” So saying, she jumped into the tram.”

However, Kidar Sharma kept his promise and cast her in his first film as director Aulad / Dil Hi To Hai (1939). Aulad/Dil Hi To hai was a down-to-earth story of a middle-class father, who had sacrificed all his life to educate his son and his darling daughter, hoping that they would be worthy children to the society and to the family. Little did the old man know that the generation gap would present a different, horrifying reality, which would destroy him completely. The modern college Miss, who destroys the dreams of her old father, the aged struggling middle class man, was played by Ramola.

After the success of the film, Ramola got romantically involved with R.C. Talwar, Kidar Sharma’s assistant who later became a director in his own right. According to Kidar Sharma, “R.C. Talwar was a classmate and friend so I ignored his relationship with Ramola.”

Later Ramola appeared in many films including Qaidi, Khazanchi, Khamoshi, Sawan Aya Re, Rim Jhim etc. When she acted in Pancholi’s famous film Khazanchi-41, she became famous all over India and film offers started pouring on her. She looked so cute in her Punjabi dress- Salwar and Kurta- in that film, that this dress became famous and popular as Khazanchi dress amongst the women in India.

Ramola’s elder sister Rooplekha was also in films. Her first film was Nishani-42. After this she worked in 4 films, all with Ramola. The films were, Shukriya-44, Albeli-45 , Jhoothi kasmen-48 and Jawani ki aag-51 Later she got married and left films.

Ramola acted in 23 films in Hindi and 5 films in Bangla. She even sang 14 songs in 4 Hindi films. She also worked in a Punjabi film “Pardesi Dhola”, for which R C Talwar was the director. After the arrival of new heroines including Madhubala, Nargis, Meena Kumari etc, Ramola’s career got eclipsed and she bid farewell to her film career. Her last 3 films Actor, Jawani Ki Aag and Stage were released in 1951. However her actual last film was the Bangla film, Anurag-51

Ramola was married twice. Her second husband, Leslie Rondeau, was a Captain in the British Air Force, who helped to train Indian pilots in the IAF post Indian Independence. Her son, Sam, from her first husband, migrated to Israel in the 1950s. She had two daughters, Dena and Linda, from her second marriage. Dena, based in London today, even acted in a film, GP Sippy’s Ahsaas (1979), and works in the fashion industry while Linda, a resident of Bombay, was an air-hostess with Air India. With her generous and large hearted spirit, Ramola also ‘adopted’ and looked after another 14 families, helping them move ahead in life. Ramola passed away in Bombay on 10-12-1988.

Dev Anand was the highest paid Hindi actor from 1957-1964 and the second highest paid Hindi actor from 1965-1975. Dev Anand held the record for the most solo hero Hindi films starting from 1957 – when Dev already had 40 solo hero films and by 1985 he had 90 solo hero films, which was the maximum by a Hindi hero. Rajesh Khanna broke Dev Anand’s record in 1987 as by end of the year 1987, Rajesh Khanna became the only Hindi hero with maximum solo hero films (ie. film where the whole film revolves around his character and others support his character) with 92 released films and with 14 two hero released films. Dev Anand was the Only Lead Actor in the World whose career spanned 8 decades–1940s to 2011. He formed a popular screen couple with Nutan.

The story of the film Stage-1951 was…….

Prof.Rajan(Raj Mehra) is sad because his family life is spoiled due to the sharp and acidic tongue of his wife(Kuldeep Kaur). His daughter Sudha(Ramola) is with him on this issue. One day he discovers that his college love Kamini(Gulab) is in town as Neelam the stage dancer. He goes to meet her. Both share their grief but Rajan can not help her.In due course, Rajan’s wife learns about Neelam, there is a fight and Rajan is injured by accident. He goes to meet Neelam-who is murdered and police arrest Rajan with blood stained clothes.

Sudha, who is enjoying her boyfriend Anand’s(Dev Anand) Birthday party, learns about it. She is determined to find out the real culprit. With help from Anand, his friend Chunnu(Sunder) and some clues, they reach Poona. Sudha joins as Dancer in the previous stage company of Neelam. They get the proof that the Owner of the theatre(Mubarak)is the culprit.

After some chase, suspense and a mock fight(it is funny to see Dev Anand fighting 7-8 gundas at a time), the murderer is caught by the police, Rajan released, Sudha-Anand married and Rajan’s wife reformed.

Enjoy this 74 year old song from this film, sung by an 18 year old Asha Bhosle….

Lyrics

Ummeeden lut gayeen apnee
tadapteen hain tamannaayen
tadapteen hain tamannaayen
bataa itna tu ae duniya
jiyen hum ya ke mar jaayen
jiyen hum ya ke mar jaayen

?? ye zingadee kaisee
ke ghut kar jee rahe hain hum
ke ghut kar jee rahe hain hum
ke tukde tukde dil lekin
uthhaaye jaa rahe hain gham
uthhaaye jaa rahe hain gham
liye phhootee huyee qismat
kahaan hum jaa ke takraayen
liye phhootee huyee qismat
kahaan hum jaa ke takraayen
kahaan hum jaa ke takraayen
kahaan hum jaa ke takraayen
bata itna tu ae duniya
jiyen hum ya ke mar jaayen
jiyen hum ya ke mar jaayen

museebat ye ke unko chhod kar
hum jaa naheen sakte
museebat ye ke unko chhod kar
hum jaa naheen sakte
qayaamat ye ke jeete jee
unhen apna naheen sakte
unhen apna naheen sakte
unhen apna naheen sakte
koi humko ye samjha de
ke dil ko kaise samjhaayen
ke dil ko kaise samjhaayen
bataa itna tu ae duniya
jiyen hum ya ke mar jaayen
jiyen hum ya ke mar jaayen
Ummeeden lut gayeen apnee
tadapteen hain tamannaayen
tadapteen hain tamannaayen
bataa itna tu ae duniya
jiyen hum ya ke mar jaayen
jiyen hum ya ke mar jaayen
