Today’s song is a qawwali from a Bilingual film – Kalakar-1954.

This was a film made in 2 languages-Hindi and Marathi. The film was made by Datta Dharmadhikari, for his own banner Alhad Chitra, poona. (Alhad was his son’s name).

When talkie films started, it also prompted the Marathi producers to make films in Hindi and Marathi, in order to capture the bigger All India market and to make more money. The very first Marathi Talkie film ‘ Ayodhyecha Raja ‘-1932 was also made in Hindi as ‘ Ayodhya ka Raja ‘at the same time. So, in this game of Bilinguals Marathi films were ahead of Bengali films, whose first Bilingual came out much later.

Today’s song is from the film Guru Ghantal-1956. This is a very out of the way and uncommon title for a film. In 1937 also there was a film of the same title. When I was writing a post on a song from that film, a few years ago, I first encountered this word. I found out the meaning of this word then. If you separate the 2 parts of this composite word, you will get separate meanings like Guru=Teacher and Ghantal=Big sounding bell. However, together this word has a totally different meaning. It means a Cheater, a person who seems simple but is a person with bad intention of cheating !

Today’s song is from the social film Stage – 1951.

The year 1951 gave us a trailer of what was in store in the decade of 1951 to 1960 and why this period was called ” The Golden Era” of Hindi Film Music. In the first year of the decade , there were many musicals like Awara, Albela, Baazi, Deedar, Bahar, Naujawan, Jaadu, Naheena, Daaman, Dholak, Madhosh, Malhar, Naadaan, Sagai, Sanam, shabistan and many more. This period was a fruitful mixture of old artists and the new era artists. Most actors, M.D.s and Directors who came from the Silent era and the 30’s and the 40’s, ended their career in the 50’s. Some M.D.s, not getting any film as a composer, chose to work as a musician in some emerging M.D’s orchestra, to sustain life. Actors retired and the new blood energized the film industry.

“Birhaa Ki Raat” (1950), which is an obscure movie by now, had actors like Dev Anand, Nargis, Madan Puri, Snehprabha Pradhan, Omprakash etc in it. Dev Anand and Nargis paired together ? I never knew that a movie like this existed.
