‘Kasauti’ (1974) was produced and directed by Arbind Sen under the banner of Lalit Kala Mandir. The cast included Hema Malini and Amitabh Bachchan in lead roles supported by Pran, Sonia Sahni, Vijay Sharma, Ramesh Deo, Sulcohana, Bipin Gupta, Satyen Kappu, Sapru, Murad, Mohan Choti, Bharat Bhushan, Viju Khote, Janakidas, Mac Mohan etc. This was Amitabh Bachchan’s first film with Hema Malini in a leading role.
Producer-director Aravind Sen picked up Amitabh Bachchan after watching his role in ‘Saat Hindustani’ (1969) and Reshma Aur Shera’ (1971). During the making of the film, Amitabh Bachchan’s two films, ‘Bansi Birju’ (1972) and ‘Ek Nazar’ (1972) were released which flopped on the box office. The distributor who financed ‘Kasauti’ (1974), got panicky and withheld further release of funds for shooting. Aravind Sen was still confident about the success of his next release film, ‘Bandhe Haathh’ (1972) which also flopped. During this period, Aravind Sen suffered a heart attack which led to further delay in completing the film. Fortunately for him, Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘Zanjeer’ (1973) and ‘Namak Haraam’ (1973) became super hit films and the shooting of the film was resumed. The film was released on August 9, 1974.
The character of Amitabh Bachchan as a sober and educated taxi driver in ‘Kasauti’ (1974) was not in keeping with the new image of ‘angry young man’ he had created in the minds of the audience after the success of his films, ‘Zanjeer’ (1973) and ‘Namak Haraam’ (1973). After watching ‘Kasauti’ (1974), it appears that the producer-director has attempted to incorporate some aggressiveness in the character of Amitabh Bachchan to the extent possible. The film follows the usual mix of box office success formula of romance, melodrama, comedy, action, songs and dances. The film was an average success on the box office which was a pleasant surprise for the distributors of the film.
The story of the film is as under:
Sapna (Hema Malini) stays with her mother (Sulochana Latkar) and her step-father (Satyen Kappu) in a hutment colony. Her step-father is a gambler and a drunkard while her mother works in a factory. So, whatever money earned by her mother gets exhausted on her step-father’s drinking and gambling habits. One day, Sapna meets her old friend of her neighbourhood, Neeta (Sonia Sahni) who appears to be well off as she is traveling in a car with her friend, Heera (Ramesh Deo). After knowing her precarious financial conditions, Neeta suggests Sapna to join her in her vocation to improve her financial condition for which her friend, Heera would help her. But Sapna is not aware that Neeta has improved her financial status by becoming a call girl and her friend, Heera is a playboy and a smuggler.
Soon, Sapna realises that Heera wants to use her only for his personal pleasure. She resists his attempt when he tries to molest her. At that time, Amit (Amitabh Bachchan) an educated owner-taxi driver sees Sapna in difficulties. He rescues her from the clutches of Heera. After a couple of meetings, both Sapna and Amit falls in love with each other. Amit’s close friend and his mentor, Pyarelal (Pran), a Nepali, who works for smugglers, Heera and Hariram (Sapru) comes to know about Amit’s liking for Sapna. He facilitates their meetings. After some time, Amit and Sapna decide to get married. However, in the meanwhile, Sapna is falsely framed for grievously injuring her step-father for which she gets six months imprisonment. Amit promises her that he would marry her after her release from the prison. During her jail term, Sapna’s mother has arguments with her husband and in a fit of anger, Sapna’s mother kills her husband and she is jailed.
Sapna is released from the jailed after completion of her imprisonment term. She is now alone. As promised, Amit proposes to marry Sapna. However, Amit’s father (Murad) objects to his marriage with Sapna due to her criminal backgrounds which will affect his sister’s impending marriage. Amit is firm on his marriage with Sapna. In order that Amit is not put in a uncomfortable situation vis-à-vis his father, Sapna decides to leave the city without telling Amit of her whereabouts and lands in Kolkata with Shyam (Mac Mohan), a failed writer and a neighbour who is a sympathiser of Sapna. She comes into contact with Ashok Babu (Vijay Sharma), a musical theatre owner who sees in her the potential to become a star singer-dancer. Sapna gets employed in the musical theatre and she becomes the theatre’s star attraction.
On the other side, Amit is in shock when he does not find the whereabouts of Sapna. When Pyarelal comes to know about the disappearance of Sapna,, he vows to find out Sapna’s whereabouts. During one of his smuggling assignments of Hariram, Pyarelal sees through his binoculars Sapna and Ashok Babu sitting together at the seashore. In fact, Ashok Babu has started liking Sapna and wants to announce her marriage with her on the eve of New Year Party. Pyarelal finds out that Ashok Babu has planned a musical show on the eve of New Year night in which Sapna is scheduled to give her singing performance. After the programme, Pyarelal meets Sapna in her green room where Ashok Babu is already present. During their conversations, Ashok Babu comes to know about her relationship with Amit Ashok Babu is magnanimous in releasing Sapna from his musical theatre if it helps her to get united with Amit.
Since Pyarelal has aborted the picking up of Hariram’s smuggled goods, he is exposed and the police team arrests Hariram’s men with the help of Amit who was driving his taxi when the police were chasing the smugglers. Heera is not happy with this and decides to take revenge against Amit. In the meanwhile, Pyarelal has brought with him Sapna from Kolkata to Amit’s house. Heera sees his opportunity to make good his earlier missed opportunity and make Sapna his target for pleasure. Sapna is abducted by Heera. However, Pyarelal who is well-versed with the operations of Hariram and Heera locates Sapna. He together with Amit fight out with Heera and his gang members and successfully bring back Sapna. Amit and Sapna are united to get married as by now, Amit’s father has passed away and his sister has got married.
The film had six songs written by Verma Malik (3), Indeewar (2)and Anand Bakshi (1) which were set to music by Kalyanji-Anandji. Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 3rd song, ‘rangmanch hai duniyaa saaree’ rendered by Lata Mangeshkar which is written by Indeewar. The song is picturised on Hema Malini who sings on the stage on the eve of New Year night. The song is of a pensive mood in contrast to the occasion of the New Year. In fact, Hema Malini is not able to complete her song performance due to the emotional upheaval in her life. One can see Pran in the audience while Vijay Sharma is observing her singing from the corner of the stage.
The background for her emotional upheaval is that Vijay Sharma, the musical theatre owner announces to the audience his marriage with Hema Malini who is shocked by the announcement. She cannot reveals her mind about Vijay Sharma as he has been instrumental in giving her the opportunity to become a star singer-dancer which has also helped in improving her financial status.

rangmanch ye duniyaa saaree
har insaan abhinetaa hai
rangmanch ye duniyaa saaree
har insaan abhinetaa hai
rangmanch ye duniyaa saaree
har insaan abhinetaa hai
apnaa apnaa abhinay kar ke ae
har koi chal detaa hai
rangmanch ye duniyaa saaree
har insaan abhinetaa hai
jo hotaa hai wo dikhtaa naheen
jo dikhtaa hai wo hotaa naheen
jo hotaa hai wo dikhtaa naheen
jo dikhtaa hai wo hotaa naheen
hans kar bhee koi hanstaa naheen
ro kar bhee koi rotaa naheen
sapnon hee sapnon mein zindagee gujaaree
rangmanch ye duniyaa saaree
har insaan abhinetaa hai
naam jiskaa jeewan hai
uljhan hee uljhan hai

ham jitnaa suljhaayen
baahon mein aur koi

doobaa dil raahon mein
honthh phir bhee gaaye
abhinay hee abhinay hai zindagee hamaaree
rangmanch ye duniyaaa saaree
har insaan abhinetaa hai
apnaa apnaa abhinay kar ke ae
har koi chal detaa hai ae
rangmanch ye duniyaa saaree
har insaaan abhi…….
