‘Professor Ki Padosan’ (1994) was produced by Kant Kumar and was directed by Ravi Tandon and Shantilal Soni. The cast included Sanjeev Kumar, Asha Parekh, Padmini Kolhapure, Deven Verma, Dilip Tahil, Shekhar Suman, Aruna Irani, Anant Mahadevan, Urmila Bhatt, Abhi Bhattacharya etc. Shoma Anand, Tabassum, Yunus Parvez and Vasant Sena made their specials appearances in the film. Amitabh Bachchan is the narrator of the film who appears at the beginning and the end of the film. This is the last of the films of Sanjeev Kumar which was released on April 29, 1994, about 8 years after his death. This was R D Burman’s second released film after his death, the first being ‘1942, A Love Story’ (1994) which was released a fortnight earlier.
This film started in 1981 with Sanjeev Kumar, Asha Parekh, Raj Babbar and Padmini Kolhapure with Ravi Tandon as the director who shot major part of the film including about 75% of the scenes of Sanjeev Kumar. The film was stuck and almost shelved in 1982 due to financial problems. After Sanjeev Kumar’s demise, the film was revived. It was suggested by Manmohan Desai that the remaining scenes of Sanjeev Kumar be presented as an invisible man. The original director, Ravi Tandon did not like the idea of an invisible Sanjeev Kumar in the film. He thought it better to walk out of the project. So another director, Shantilal Soni was roped in to complete the film with Shekhar Suman replacing Raj Babbar and Sudesh Bhosle dubbing the voice of Sanjeev Kumar for his invisible scenes.[Source: Navbharat Times, April 12, 2024]. Incidentally, the new director, Shantilal Soni had directed ‘Mr. X In Bombay’ (1964) which had an invisible protagonist.
The film belongs to the genre of family comedy. Sanjeev Kumar is a professor living with his wife, Asha Parekh and their child in an apartment in Mumbai. Padmini Kolhapure, a model has recently shifted in the same apartment as his neighbour. One day when Padmini Kolhapure was returning home with lots of purchases, a misunderstanding results between them when he was descending and she was ascending the staircase of the apartment. She thinks that Sanjeev Kumar was deliberately going back on the staircase to follow her. Luckily, Asha Parekh hears the shouts and comes to the rescue of Sanjeev Kumar. She insults Padmini by pointing out her revealing dress and tells her that her husband will never look at another woman other than his own wife. An insulted Padmini takes the challenge seriously and begins her revenge by seducing Sanjeev Kumar though she has her steady boyfriend, Shekhar Suman. Padmini Kolhapur’s seduction of Sanjeev Kaumar leads some hilarious situations.
I am not discussing the story of the film in details here as there are continuity problems in the film due to the inordinate delay of the film. Furthermore, due to changing the role of Sanjeev Kumar as an invisible man in his remaining scenes, the script goes in some drastic changes. Suffice to say here that Sanjeev Kumar becomes invisible due to drinking a liquid. He is there with his family, with Padmini, her fiancée, Shekhar Suman and with his friend, Deven Verma and his love interest, Aruna Irani but he is not visible to them. In the end, the invisible Sanjeev Kumar helps Padmini and Shekhar Suman from the clutches of the villain, Dilip Tahil and his gang to get them married. Soon the effect of his liquid drink which made him invisible starts waning and he slowly appears visible to all of them. For this scene, Sanjeev Kumar is very briefly shown, probably in an animation or a cutout form and immediately the scenes move to his flashback montages in the film to show that he has returned to his routine family life.
While watching the film, one will get an impression that the film has suddenly moved from one to another film which looks like a replica of ‘Mr India’ (1987). The starts of the film has given an optimism of a good family comedy like ‘Teen Bahuraaniyaan’ (1968) and ‘Manchali’ (1973). The moment the film shift to invisible man, the quality of the comedy gets downgraded. The invisibility of Sanjeev Kumar appears a boon to another comedy couple in the film, Deven Verma and Aruna Irani who get the extended exposure. Those who are not familiar with the circumstances under which the film could get completed will be surprised as to how a seasoned actor like Sanjeev Kumar agreed to act in this film.
The film had four songs written by Gulshan Bawra which were set to music by R D Burman. I present the first song from the film, ‘miley jhoom ke milan ritu aayee’ rendered by Lata Mangeshkar and Anup Jalota. The song is composed in Raag Megh Malhar which is presented as a dream sequence of Sanjeev Kumar.
The context of the song is that Sanjeev Kumar is giving a lecture in the college on the women’s power which can be constructively used for the progress of the mankind as well as a weapon for the destruction of a strong person. He gives the example of Menaka and Vishwamitra when the latter had become a threat to Lord Indra. So he sends Menaka to disrupt his meditation. By saying this, Sanjeev Kumar goes into his imagination and dreams himself as Vishwamitra in meditation while Shoma Anand as Menaka dances to disturb his meditation.
I had never imagined that Shoma Anand can give an excellent performance as a classical dancer like in this song as she was never known to be a trained dancer. Probably, she may have got an extensive training and rehearsal for this dance under Gopikrishna who was the Choregrapher for this dance song. This may be the only film in which Sanjeev Kumar has given the performance as a classical dancer albeit in brief and with a limited range on the screen.
