Today’s song is from a Mythological film – Naag Panchami-1953.

What do we know about snakes, in general ? Whenever and wherever a snake is found, the tendency is to kill it. Humans have an inherent fear about snakes. Not all snakes are poisonous or venomous and very few are capable of killing humans with their venoms. Out of all the 3500 known snake species only 20 % are venomous and only 7 % can kill humans, as per a study. Actually, snakes are very useful creatures, particularly for the farmers. They eat rats-who destroy the standing crops and stored grains. Non-Venomous snakes are eaten with relish in China and some other countries in the Far East.

The king of snakes- Vasuki, according to Mythology was born to Sage Kashyap and wife Kadru. Vasuki is considered as the leader of all snakes in the Naag Lok. Vasuki was so long and strong that he was used as a rope for Samudra Manthan by Gods and Asurs. The elder brother of Vasuki-Sheshnag balances the universe on its head He is also used as a bed for Lord Vishnu. The younger brother Vasuki adorns the neck of Lord Shiva.

All this indicates that snakes/Naagas are variously depicted by our ancestors very honourably. Like Swarg Lok and Patal Lok, there is also a Naag Lok. We all worship Naagas on Naag Panchami. There are many snake temples in India. The snakes are useful to farmers. In Spite of all this we kill them as soon as we find them. Any animal or creature tries to stay away from humans and will not attack them unless there is a fear of their life.

In our Holy Scriptures, Naag Lok and stories of Naagas are found in plenty. References are found in Ramayan and Mahabharat also. Bhagvat Puran, Vishnu Puran, Shi Puran and other books have many stories about them. Mansa Devi, younger sister of Sheshnag and Vasuki, is considered as Lord Shiv ji’s daughter.

In India all our social customs, traditions, calendars and Festivals are linked to Agriculture, because basically, even today, we are an Agricultural country. With almost over 70% population (as against 85% in 1947) living in Villages and depending on farming, even these days. No wonder all our major events have an Agricultural base.

SHRAVAN or Saawan is the month in Hindu calendar which is the FIRST month of the rainy season. It is a month of rejoicing too, as many of our Festivals fall in this month.

The 5th TITHI or the 5th day of Saawan was celebrated recently as NAAG PANCHAMI. On this day, Naag/Cobras or simply any snake in general is worshipped. This is because Snakes are considered as Farmer’s friends. Snakes eat the mice, which destroy the stored grains and standing crops too. Mice also spread many diseases in villages.

Worshipping Snakes is a symbolic way to acknowledge their importance to the Farmers and spread the message of environmental balance. On this day, young girls in the villages tie Jhoola(swing) on trees and sing songs.

As expected there are hundreds of stories in Puranas about the snakes or Naags. It is believed that like Swarg Lok and Pataal Lok, there is also a Naag Lok, which is ruled by a King of Snakes/Naags.

Naags, not being independent or a major Devata, have their stories in Puranas, connected with some other Gods. For example,in Bhagwat Puran there is a story of ” Syamantak Mani” and Lord Krishna and in Shiv Puran, there is a story of Manasa, the snake queen who is the daughter of Shiv.

The cast of the film Naag Panchami-1953 was Manhar Desai, Nirupa Roy (together they had acted in total 33 films), Ranjit Kumari (wife of actor Ramsingh), B.M.Vyas, Umakant, Durga Khote, Heera Sawant and many others. Actor Ram Singh was the Guest Artist. It was produced by V.C.Desai for his own banner Vinod Films, Bombay. It was directed by Raman B. Desai and the music was by Chitragupta – the melody king, for songs written by G.S.Nepali. All the 7 songs featured Asha Bhosle- 6 solos and 1 duet with Mohd. Rafi.

In the film cast you must have seen the name UMAKANT DESAI. I am sure most people would not know anything about him. People remember Dilip kumar for his double role in ‘Ram aur Shyam’ and Triple role in ‘Bairaag’. You also remember Sanjeev Kumar for his 9 roles in ‘ Naya Din nayi Raat’ or Kamal Hassan for his 10 roles in Dashavtar, but hardly anyone knows that Umakant Desai was the FIRST MALE actor to do 3 Roles in the film ” Hukum ka Ikka “-1939 ( Rajkumar,Madari and Common Man).

Umakant Desai was born in Sankheda, near Vadodara (Baroda), Gujarat on 13-6-1908. After matriculation, he came to Bombay and did a job in B.B. & C. I . Railways (Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway,a private Railway company of pre Independence period). He used to do roles in local dramas. One day Director Chimanlal Desai saw him in a drama called “Jaya and Jayant”. He was so impressed with him that he took him to act in Gujarat’s First Talkie ” Narsi Mehta”-1932. In this film Umakant did the role of Krishna.

So, the son of a landlord Himmatbhai Jagubhai Desai became a film actor. He joined Prakash Pictures on a salary of Rs.150/- pm, but when he left Prakash,he was drawing Rs.3000/- p.m.. In 1934, he worked in Gujarati film ‘Sansar Leela’. He sang 2 duets with Rajkumari in this film. The film was a Hit and was remade in Hindi as “Nai Duniya”-1934. He worked in Bharat Milap-42. His best remembered role was as LAXMAN in the film ” RAM RAJYA”-1943,which created several records, including that it was the only Hindi film Mahatma Gandhi ever saw in his lifetime !

Umakant worked in 59 Hindi films and 15 Gujarati films. Anmol Moti-48 was his last film as a Hero. Then he shifted to doing character roles. He had worked with Durga Khote, Shobhana Samarth, Pramila, Ratnamala, Ranjana, Sitara, Snehprabha Pradhan, Meena Kumari, Amita, Vyjayanti mala, Nalini Jaywant, Kamini Kaushal etc. For fluency in Hindi and Urdu, he was appointed a Teacher also.

He worked in 26 films of Prakash,in which 8 films were directed by Vijay Bhatt. He mostly worked in mythological and social films. Some of his films were,Miss mala,Chhote Babu,Station master, Amar Asha,Poornima,Anmol Moti,Kavita,Hamara Ghar etc . He did Laxman’s role in 7 films.

Umakant’s son and daughter in law died a tragic death in the Snow Blizzard in the USA in 1975. His wife Kaumudi ben died in 2006 and Umakant died on 25-1-2007. He was awarded Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Award in 2004. ( Adapted from Shri Harish Raghuvanshi ji,famous film historian, compiler and writer’s Gujarati article on Umakant).

Chitragupt was my favourite M.D. I simply loved his music. His songs were very melodious. Even mohd. Rafi is on record saying that he never missed any opportunity to sing his songs as they were very melodious.

Chitragupta (16-11-1917 to 14-1-1991) gave music to 149 films and composed 1057 songs in Hindi. He also gave music to Bhojpuri, Magadhi, Gujarati and Punjabi films. His first film was Lady Robin Hood-1946 and the last was Shivganga-1989. In this period he used 53 lyricists and 60 singers. He gave opportunities to many first-timers and less known singers like Saroj Welingkar, Radha Govind, Suman Purohit, Ram Kamlani, Usha Aiyar, Aparna Mayekar, Deedar Singh, Chandrani Mukherjee, Alisha Chenoy and few others.

Dr. Narendra Nath Pandey has written a detailed biography, with all his song lyrics, in 2 Volumes. Before writing the books, he had contacted me for some information, which I gave him gladly. After publishing the books, he gifted me both volumes as complimentary copies in October 2023.

The story of the film Naag Panchami-1953 was….

Actually this film is also a story of Sati Behula. Once upon a time there was a king called Chandrabhan, who was a great Shiv bhakta. Manasa was the Queen of the Naak Lok. She was also the daughter of Shiv. She wished that all people should worship her, instead of Shiv.

God Shiv told her that if Chandrabhan worships her all people will do it. In Spite of her many attempts, Chandrabhan does not agree to give up Shiv Pooja and do Manasa Pooja. She gives him the curse that his son will die on his wedding night with a snake bite.

His son the Raajkumar marries the princess Behula of the neighbouring kingdom. On their wedding night, though all precautions were taken, a snake bites him and he dies. Behula, a Shiv bhakta herself, performs a pilgrimage carrying her dead husband’s body with her.

Seeing her devotion and Bhakti Lord Shiv makes Raajkumar alive again. To please Mansa, He gives her a boon that on the 5th day of Shrawan all snakes will be worshipped and the day will be called NAAG PANCHAMI forever.

Let us now enjoy a 72 year old song sung by a 20 year old Asha Bhosle and picturised on 22 year old Nirupa Roy. Today (8 September 2025) happens to be the birthday of Asha Bhosle (DoB 8 September 1933) as well. We extends her a very happy birthday and many more happy returns of the day.

mere nainon mein deep jaley pyaar ke
mere angnaa mein aaye jab se saajan
mere nainon mein deep jaley pyaar ke

saawan mein badraa ko dekhey papeeharaaa
