Mukesh and his Composers – 43
I return with a second consecutive post on an artist who never scored for a full film as a music director.
But, unlike Vipin Mehra of the previous post, the composer in this post is very well known and continues to perform to this day.
I am using the terms music director, composer quite freely and for artists who never scored for full-fledged films. But then as we read this post, things will be clearer.
Today, we shall discuss composer/musician Kishore Desai’s association with Mukesh. I am spared the exercise of researching on Kishore Desai as Sadanand ji has not only written a well-researched and detailed post on his life and works but also met him in person.
Here is the post.
I reproduce a para from his post.
We were curious to know as to why he did not compose music for any Hindi film. Kishore Desai revealed that it was his sheer bad luck that three Hindi films he signed as music director in early 60s were either shelved halfway or did not take off. The name of the films he gave was ‘Abdulla e Bagdad’, ‘Zindagi ki Raahen’ and ‘Omar Khayyam’, the last one was to be made under the banner of Gurudutt Films. The first two films was shelved halfway and the third film did not even take off as shortly after agreeing to sign him as music director, Gurudutt was no more. However, he had composed some NFSs sung by Mukesh, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Kavi Pradeep, Kamal Barot and Mohammed Rafi (Gujarati NFS).
Thus, Kishore Desai never scored for a film but has immensely contributed to numerous songs as an Assistant Music Director, arranger etc.
Popularly known as the Mandolin Man of India, he is deservingly invited to many concerts to this day.
Here is his performance as recent as June 2025. Watch it and admire his talent.
There are plenty of blogposts, youtube interviews, news articles etc. on Kishore Desai and can be easily found on the web.
Coming to Mukesh’s association with Kishore Desai, there are five beautiful NFS.
Three of these have been covered on the blog. Two by Sadanand ji and one by yours truly.
Before we go to the list, I can’t help reproducing the table I had prepared in my post written on Mukesh’s 38th Remembrance Day.
It is an important piece of information regarding the many facets of Mukesh apart from his playback singing. Here is the table.
| Year | Film | Role | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1940 | – | – | Recorded 6 private songs |
| 1941 | Nirdosh | Actor-Singer | With Nalini Jaywant |
| 1942 | Adaab Arz | Actor | With Nalini Jaywant |
| 1942 | Dukh-Sukh | Actor-Singer | With Kathak dancer Sitara Devi |
| 1944 | Uss-paar | Villan | With Kusum and has one duet in the film |
| 1949 | Rumaal | Guest appearance | – |
| 1951 | Malhar | Producer | With Roshan as Music Director |
| 1953 | Aah | Guest appearance | Featuring in the song “choti si yeh zindagani” as a tangewala |
| 1953 | Mashooqa | Actor-Singer | With Suraiya |
| 1956 | Anuraag | Actor, Singer, Music Director and Producer | With Usha Kiran |
All of the information provided above is factual, except for the small/big doubt about the song from Uss-Paar (1944).
Was the duet picturized on Mukesh himself or did he give playback for the song.
The latter could mean that this relatively lesser-known song should be considered as the first playback of Mukesh. I have discussed this point multiple times in my previous posts.
Coming to association itself, here is the table of 5 songs.
| S. No | Name of the song | Lyricist |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tere labon ke muqaabil | Shiv Kumar Saroj |
| 2 | Naitikata ka sur sarita mein | Acharya Shri Tulsi |
| 3 | Bahaaron se keh do | Shiv Kumar Saroj |
| 4 | Mil na saka dil ko agar pyar tumaara | Indeewar |
| 5 | Mujhse yun rooth kar kahan | Shiv Kumar Saroj |
1 and 3 are written by Sadanand ji wherein 3 is the detailed bio-post which I have mentioned earlier.
4 is one of my favourite NFS of Mukesh and I listen to it any number of times.
Amongst the two unposted songs at two and five, I was curious about the Bhajan/Devotional/Inspirational song at S. No 2. Not able to help myself, I requested our Sudhir ji to help me with the English translation, and I thank him for the same. As with many bhajans/devotional songs that Mukesh sang, this one too speaks volumes of his sincerity and devotion to singing.
A very special aspect of today’s song is the lyricist Acharya Shri Tulsi. It is very likely that it is the revered Jain religious leader himself since there are many youtube uploads singing the same song have credited the religious leader who was known for conveying such noble teachings.
The wiki page on him can be found here.
I could not come across any other prominent singer singing this song.
The song is also sung in many schools across the country even today.
So, here is Mukesh again singing this song through his heart.
It’s only befitting that Mukesh’s pure and golden voice has conveyed the message on the righteous way of living.

Lyrics
naitikta kee sur saritaa mein
jan jan man paavan ho
sanyammai jeevan ho
naitikta kee sur saritaa mein
jan jan man paavan ho
sanyammai jeevan ho
apne se apna anushaasan
anuvrat kee paribhaashha
varn jaati ya sampradaay se
mukt dharm kee bhaashaa
chhote chhote sankalpon se
maanas parivartan ho
sanyammai jeevan ho
maitreebhaav hamaara sabse
pratidin badhta jaaye
samta sah-astitv samanvay neeti safalta paaye
shudhh saadhya ke liye niyojit
maatr shuddh saadhan ho
sanyammai jeevan ho
vidhyaaarthee ya shikshak ho
mazdoor aur vyaapaaree
nar ho naaree
bane neetimai
jeevancharya saaree
kathhnee karnee kee samaantaa
mein gatisheel charan ho
sanyammai jeevan ho
naitikta kee sur saritaa mein
jan jan man paavan ho
sanyammai jeevan ho
