‘Imaandaar’ (1987) was produced by Surendra Pal Chaudhary and Sarla Sandhu and was directed by Sushil Malik. The cast included Sanjay Dutt and Farah Naaz in the lead roles supported by Pran, Sumeet Saigal, Satyen Kappu, Vikas Anand, Rohan Kapoor, Ranjeet, Mehmood, Om Prakash, Birbal, Chandrashekhar, Sudhir Dalvi, Dinesh Hingoo, Shammi, Shashi Kiran, Mehmood Jr., Ram Sethi, Subbiraj etc.

The film was a Prakash Mehra presentation which indicates as to who was behind this film. Sushil Malik, the director of the film was Prakash Mehra’s assistant director. The film’s producer, Surendra Pal Chaudhary was one of the partners of Prakash Mehra Productions. Another connection of this film with Prakash Mehra is his trademark film story revolving around a homeless, abandoned and orphaned lead actor, like in ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’ (1978), ‘Jwaalaamukhi’ (1980), ‘Laawaaris’ (1981), ‘Sharaabi’ (1984) etc. In a way, Prakash Mehra was replicating his own story who was an orphan child having lost his mother and thereafter his father abandoning him when he was 8 year of age.

The story of the film is as under:

Ameena (Shammi) runs an orphanage in which Raju (Sanjay Dutt) and Vijay (Rohan Kapoor) grow together like brothers for whom Ameena is like their mother. Vijay’s parents were killed when he was a child and landed in the orphanage. Vijay is good at study and has completed engineering. Raju wants to send him to London for training for which he can do anything to earn money with honesty. Also his earnings save the orphanage from closure.

Renu (Farah Naaz) is a pampered daughter of Pharmaceutical firm’s owner, Sudarshan Rai (Pran). She is in love with Kailash (Sumit Sehgal) and wants to marry him. Kailash is the son of Ramesh Sinha (Ranjeet) who is the enemy of Sudarshan as he was responsible for killing his business partner, Verma (Sudhir Dalvi). So, Sudarshan does not want Renu to get married to Kailash. At the same time, he does not want to antagonise Renu. Sudarshan has met Raju when he had saved him from a gang of Ramesh Sinha and is pleased with his honest confession that he had saved him to get money as reward so that he can use this money for good causes.

Sudarshan employs Raju with the task of weening away Renu from Kailash in a subtle way to break their engagement for which he would be handsomely rewarded. Raju accepts the task as he is need of money to send Vijay to London. Sudarshan introduces Raju to Renu as a wealthy man from USA on a short visit to India and wants her to give company to him. Over a period of time, Raju succeeds in luring Renu away from Kailash as she breaks his engagement with him for trashing Raju. But in the process, both fall in love with each other.

With the money Raju has got from Sudarshan, he is able to send Vijay to London for training and to save the orphanage from closing. In London, Vijay gets employed with Sudarshan’s business office in London. When Sudarshan comes to know that Vijay is none other than his murdered business partner’s son, he makes Vijay his business partner and calls him back to India to take charge. He is given a bungalow and chauffeur driven car. Simultaneously, he thinks of Vijay as his prospective son-in-law and proposes Renu’s marriage with him. Renu is in dilemma as she is afraid to reveal her relationship with Raju to her father. But Sudarshan lets her know that Raju was employed by him to act as such to ween her away from Kailash. Renu is devasted by this disclosure and is angry with Raju that for the money sake, he pretended to be in love with her. She meekly agrees whatever her father thinks fit for her marriage.

Sudarshan announces the engagement ceremony of Vijay with Renu. Vijay meets Ameena and Raju at the orphanage and invites them to attend his engagement ceremony. Raju is very happy about the progress in Vijay’s career without knowing that he is getting engaged to Renu. Vijay on his part reveals to Sudarshan that but for his friend Raju’s help, he would not have achieved his status that he has got now. Sudarshan is also keen to meet Vijay’s mentor. On the engagement day, Raju is on his way to attend the engagement and is shocked to know that Vijay is getting engaged to Renu. Without attending the engagement ceremony, Raju returns to orphanage and decides to leave the place.

Vijay is surprised that Raju did not attend his engagement ceremony. He learns that Raju has been missing from the orphanage. He tells Sudarshan that his first priority is to search for Raju before he goes ahead with the marriage. Sudarshan and Renu also joins him in searching Raju. They come to know that Raju has been working in a hotel as a singer. They watch his singing programme during which Vijay gets some inkling that Renu is in love with Raju.

In the meanwhile, the news of engagement of Renu with Vijay goes to Kailash who wants to take a revenge. While in the hotel, Vijay is trying to stop Raju from leaving, Ramesh Sinha and Kailash with their gang kidnap Sudarshan, Renu and Vijay. Raju follows them to a dungeon where all the three are tied and Ramesh Sinha is trying to forcibly get a document signed by Sudarshan transferring all his assets to him. However, Raju reaches the dungeon and gives him a manipulated documents of transferring Sudarshan’s assets to Ramesh Sinha against the release of Renu. As soon as Renu gets released, Raju reveals the realities of the documents and hold Kailash at gun point to get Sudarshan and Vijay released. A fight ensues between Ramesh Sinha and his gang with Raju, Vijay and Sudarshan in which Ramesh Sinha misfires a gunshot which hits his son, Kailash. With his death, Ramesh Sinha is devasted and his gang retreats.

A shocked Raju leaves after offering apology to Sudarshan. The only person who has power to stop Raju from leaving is Ameena who persuades him to return to get united with Renu. Sudarshan and Vijay are more than happy of Renu and Raju’s reunion.

The film had six songs (including two songs in double versions) written by Prakash Mehra (4), Anjaan (1) and Maya Govind (1) which were set to music by Kalyanji-Anandji. One song has been covered on the Blog. I present the 2nd song, ‘aur iss dil mein kyaa rakhaa hai’ written by Prakash Mehra. This song has two versions – solo version rendered by Asha Bhosle and the duet version rendered by Suresh Wadkar and Asha Bhosle. The lyrics of both the versions are almost the same except in one line in which the word ‘pyaar’ is substituted by the word, ‘dard’ in duet version.

The context of Asha Bhosle version of the song is that Sanjay Dutt who has been employed by Pran to give company to his daughter, Farha to ween away from Sumit Saigal whom she wants to marry. Sumit Saigal is the son of Ranjeet who is the enemy of Pran. But in due course of time, Farah falls in love with Sanjay Dutt who resists her love because of his professional commitment to her father, Pran. So to lure Sanjay Dutt, Farah takes him for a stroll in the garden and sings for him expressing her love for him. Finally, Sanjay Dutt also falls in love with her.

The context of the duet version of the song is that Pran has announced the marriage of his daughter, Farah with Rohan Kapoor who has now become the business partner of Pran. Sanjay Dutt and Rohan Kapoor have grown up together in an orphanage. Sanjay Dutt treats Rohan Kapoor more like a brother for whom he had done so much for his higher education. When Sanjay Dutt comes to know about the marriage of Farah with Rohan Kapoor, he leaves the orphanage without informing anyone. Rohan Kapoor along with Pran and Farah are searching for his whereabouts when they come to know that he has his singing programme at a hotel. They visit to witness his singing where he is singing the same song which Farah had sung for him earlier. When the song ends, Rohan Kapoor comes to know about Farah’s love for Sanjay Dutt.

Kamath Sir, I have always wanted to write a post for this song, though I was aware of only the Suresh Wadkar version, which was very popular. Somehow I never got around to it, as I don’t usually write posts for 80’s songs. Even then last I checked, this was not posted. Now you beat me to it.

Recent reminder is the cover version by Sanam Puri. It is a video story, with follow up of “Kya hua tera wada”. Worth a listen and look. I have tried, but not able to post video links here.

The movie’s story seems to have been rehashed in “Sapnay”.

Regards.

Nahm ji,

I watched the video you referred to in your comment as well as some more videos of him today. Sanam Puri seems to have a large fan following with his videos getting millions hit. I think his fans like the stories he creates along with the 80s and 90s songs.
