Pancham’s Music – Eighties (1981-1990) Part-2 –post-11 (1984)

The song in this post is from the movie ‘Zameen Aasmaan-1984’. It was directed by Bharat Rangachari for Film Group, Bombay. Subhash Gupta & Uday Narayan Singh were the proudcers of this movie. This movie was passed by the Censor Board on 14.05.1984. The cast of this movie has Shashi Kapoor, Rakhi Gulzar, Rekha, Sanjay Dutt, Anita Raj, Mazhar Khan (2), and Satyen Kappu, Kalpana Iyer, Chandramohan Khanna, Rajnath, Amol Sen and others.

If one notices the first three names in the star cast of this movie i.e. Shashi Kapoor, Rakhi Gulzar & Rekha, it would remind us of the movie ‘Baseraa-1981’ which had the same three artistes there as well . Couple of days back the story of ‘Baseraa-1981’ has been discussed by our Shree Sadanand jee in his post with a song from this movie. After reading that post, when I read about the story of today’s movie ‘Zameen Aasmaan-1984’ I felt that this movie might have been inspired from the movie ‘Baseraa’. Though not entirely similar, the one commonthing about both movies is powerful performances by Rakhi Gulzar and Rekha as mentioned by sources on internet.

‘Zameen Aasmaan-1984’ has five songs written by lyricist Anjaan. Music for this movie was composed by Rahul Dev Burman whom we fondly called as Pancham. Sapan Chakravarty and Basu Manohari were the assistants in music to Pancham in this movie.

R D Burman’s had composed music in many as seventeen movies released in 1984. He delivered some of his best music in this year. Let us have a look on the list of movies with music by Pancham in 1984.

The movies are;
‘Aanand Aur Aanand’, ‘Aawaaz’, ‘Andar Baahar’, ‘Bheemaa’, ‘Duniyaa’, ‘Ham Dono’, ‘Ham Hain Laajawaab’, ‘Jaagir’, ‘Jawaani’, ‘Jhhoothha Sach’, ‘Karishma’, ‘Maatee Maange Khoon’, ‘Manzil-Manzil’, ‘Musaafir (UR)’, ‘Sunny’, ‘Yeh Desh’ and ‘Zameen Aasmaan’.

In-spite of composing good music and giving some timeless classics in some of the above movies, none of the song from the above movies appeared in the 1984 annual list of Binaca Geetmala. Songs of ‘Hero-1983’, ‘Sharaabi-1984’ and ‘Tohfa-1984’ ruled the list by securing number 1, 2 and 3 respectively in that Year’s Binaca geetmala finals. One more song of ‘Tohfa-1984’ was at number four.

If I am asked to select the best of Pancham from that year, the album “Duniya-1984” certainly was the topper for me. It had a varied range of songs composed by Pancham – the foot tapping ‘tu chaand nagar ki shehzaadi’, taking you far from world ‘gehrey halkey, halkey gehrey’, the philosophical ‘phirte hain kab se dar-badar’, the entertaining ‘duniya bahut hi kamaal hai’, the party song ‘jhoomti raat jawaan’ and lovely one ‘teri meri zindagi pyaar bhari zindagi’. The lyrics of all the songs by Javed Akhtar were magical.

The movie ‘Sunny’ (aur kya ahd e wafaa hote hain etc), ‘Zameen Aasmaan’ (aisaa samaa naa hotaa), ‘Aawaaz’, ‘Ham Hain Laajawaab’, ‘Jhoothha Sach’ also have some good compositions by Pancham. But the albums mostly heard that became run-away hits were songs from ‘Jawaani’ and ‘Manzil Manzil’. However, none of these songs made it to the ‘Binaca Geetmala annual list of 1984’.

Let us now come to the song under discussion. This is the second song from this movie ‘Zameen Aasmaan-1984’ to be posted on the blog. The first song from this movie was posted on 13.08.2014 which is ‘aisaa samaa naa hotaa …’.

This song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar. I could not find the full video of this song. I guess that this song is played in parts in the movie. Knowledgeable readers can throw more light on this. I have not watched this movie so can’t say much about it.

The audio version- a longer one – must be the full song. In the partial video available we can see actress Rekha lip-syncing in Lata Mangeshkar’s voice and holding a child in her arms. Rakhee can be seen looking on from a distance. At the end of the picturisation Rekha is seen handing over the child to Raakhi.

Anjaan is the lyricist and he together with R D Burman has helped create this magical title song cum theme song.

Let us listen to this beautiful song composed by Pancham.

Song-Ye faasle ye dooriyaan (Zameen Aasmaan)(1984) Singer-Lata Mangeshkar, Lyrics-Anjaan, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics

ye faasle
ye dooriyaan
kaisee hain ye majbooriyaan
mil ke bhee kyun
aakhir yahaan aan
zameen aasmaan
naheen miltey
ye faasle
ye dooriyaan
kaisee hain ye majbooriyaan
milke bhee kyun
aakhir yahaan
zameen aasmaan
naheen miltey

jaane kyaa hai ye bebasee ee ee
bas naa kisee kaa chaley ae
o o o o sadiyon se badle naheen
kudrat ke faisley ae
kyun hain judaa aa
donon jahaan
mil ke bhee kyun
aakhir yahaan
zameen aasmaan
naheen miltey ae
ye faasle
ye dooriyaan
kaisee hain ye majbooriyaan
mil ke bhee kyun
aakhir yahaan
zameen aasmaan
naheen miltey

aanchal mein phool kyaa khiley ae ae
honthhon kee hansee chheen le ae ae
ho o o
kaise ho ke lau se judaa
shamma ye jaltee rahe ae
tanhaa rahein kyun
ye jism jaan
mil ke bhee kyun
aakhir yahaan aan
zameen aasmaan
naheen miltey ae
ye faasle
ye dooriyaan
kaisee hain ye majbooriyaan
mil ke bhee kyun
aakhir yahaan
zameen aasmaan
naheen miltey

aahon mein agar ho asar
mumkin hai phir kyaa naheen
ho o o choomey zameen ke qadam
ye aasmaan bhee kaheen
ik din milen aen
donon jahaan
kaise kahe koi yahaan
zameen aasmaan
naheen miltey ae
ye faasle
ye dooriyaan
kaisee hain ye majbooriyaan
milke bhee kyun
aakhir yahaan
zameen aasmaan
naheen miltey
zameen aasmaan
naheen miltey
