#the Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #

(Lyricist Kavi Pradeep-38)

The ten-day long ‘Durgaa Poojaa’ Utsav is already underway all over our country. People are celebrating it with customary fervour and energy. This is also the time for staging of ‘Raam Leelaa’ in many parts of the country. I have fond memories of watching ‘Raam Leelaa’ during my childhood days. If I remember correctly the performing troup also used to add other incidences from mythology in between the episodes from Ramayana.
Today I am presenting a song which covers one such important incidence from Ramayana, that is Prabhu Ram, Seetaa Maiyya and Lakshman boarding the boat of Kevat to cross the river Gangaa. This song is from the movie ‘Shri Ram Bharat Milan-1965’. It was directed by Manibhai Vyas for R.M. Art Productions, Bombay.
The cast of this movie had Prithviraj, Mahipal, Anita Guha, Nirupa Roy, Balakram, Rajkumar, Aruna Irani, Vanmala, B.M. Vyas, Niranjan Sharma, Sulochana and others. This movie has six songs written by Kavi Pradeep and they were composed by Pandit Shivram. The singers for this movie are Asha Bhonsle, Kamal Barot, Mohd Rafi, and Usha Mangeshkar.
This movie ‘Shri Ram Bharat Milan-1965’ made its debut on the blog on 06.02.2018 with its’ song ‘mat jaao mat jaao mat jaao raam jee’.
While presenting the above first song from this movie our dear Sudhir jee had mentioned the following about this movie.
Time was 1960s, and religious films still had a popular following. And the producers’ community also had an ongoing interest, to continue making films based on our scriptures and ancient history, ensuring that these stories do not fade away from public memory. Their objective was also to ensure that the teachings of the epic stories associated with religion, continue to be passed on to the newer generations. It was a matter of personal and collective responsibility that the film makers and other artists would continue to get together and make such films. Sadly, in the recent decades, this awareness and this responsibility has become a thing of the past.
In 1965, two films were released narrating the story of brotherly love between Sri Ram and Sri Bharat. The other film is titled ‘Bharat Milaap’.
I guess that both these movies cover episodes of the ‘vanvaas’ period of Shree Raam, Lakshman and Seetaa Maiyyaa. Prabhu Raam stays in forests with boatman community and then proceeds further by crossing the river Ganga. The earlier song presented by Sudhir jee covers this stay of Shree Raam, Lakshman and Seeta in the forest and their plan to move forward.
Sudhir jee mentioned…
As is also given in the description of this episode in the Ramayan, the boatmen community do not want Sri Ram to leave their humble village, and request Him to consider staying with them, for the duration of the forest sojourn. But of course Sri Ram has other things in mind that He has to accomplish during these fourteen years. In this clip from the film, this request to Sri Ram is being presented as a dance. The two lead dancers – I am not able to place a name to these faces, and I request other knowledgeable readers to please help to identify them.
The song under discussion picks up from there when on the banks of the river Ganga Shree Raam, Lakshman and Seetaa approach a boatman to cross the river. Responsibility of ferrying them to the other side falls upon the boatman Kevat.
But there is another story how the Kevat agrees to ferry them when he had refused to do so earlier. He asks Prabhu Raam to allow him to wash his feet before allowing him to board his boat. Kevat took this precaution because he feared that his boat would otherwise turn into stone if Prabhu Raam’s stepped onto the boat. I am not going into the details of this episode here as most of us are aware of it. Here once again I am reproducing the text from Sudhir jee’s post which he already covered (for us 🙂 ) which is the context of the today’s song.
The scene enacted in this song is during the initial days of the vanvaas – the sojourn of Sri Ram to the forests for a period of 14 years, accompanied by Sita ji and Lakshman Bhaiyyaa. As they reach the banks of River Ganga, they have to seek help of the boatmen to cross the river. This episode is a one of the most emotional and well documented episodes in the Ramayan. Nishad Raj Guh, the chief of the boatmen community, and Kevat, one of the boatmen in this community, play very significant roles in this episode.
So, here is the song about this most emotional episode from Ramayan. It is very well described by Kavi Pradeep with his heartfelt lyrics that capture the sentiments of the boatman perfectly.
The melodious music is by Pandit Shivram and heart touching singing is by Rafi Saab. The singing of the chorus supporting to Rafi Saab helps to enhance the composition well. Let us now listen to this song …
(I would also like to mention here that when I came across this song two months ago when I watched the Kevat episodeo f the TV Serial ‘Ramayan’ (of Ramanand Sagar) and like it very much though I found it a little bit stretched).
