‘Dastoor’ (1991) was produced by Harish Munjal and Prem Chugh and was directed by Anil Mattoo. The cast included debutants Dolly Minhas, Pomy Dev in the lead roles supported by Sharmila Tagaore, Suresh Oberoi, Raza Murad, Alok Nath, Manohar Singh, Johny Lever, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Dinesh Hingoo, Harish Munjal etc. Amita Nangia made her friendly appearance in the film. I have watched the film for the first time only few days back in one sitting. The film is a murder mystery drama with a fast-paced narratives to keep the audience engrossed while watching the film.

The opening scene of the film gives a feel of watching some of the suspense thriller films of the 1960s like ‘Wo Kaun Thhi’ (1964), ‘Poonam Ki Raat’ (1965) and ‘Mera Saaya’ (1966). A girl in white, without any expression, walks through the forest in a dark night with a background song, her destination being an architecturally impressive palatial mansion in which the owner lives alone. The caretkaer of the dmansion is seen smoking his chillum. After some time, he is seen switching off the lights of the first floor of the mansion. Simultaneously, a man in hat is also walking toward the mansion. An unidentified person has killed the watchman of the mansion by suffocating him. Inside the house is a pet eagle which makes a noise, probably giving a notice that someone has entered inside the mansion. Another man is slowly climbing the stairs with camera focussed only on his legs. Now, inside the mansion, there are four persons in addition to the owner of the house – the caretaker, the girl in white, the man with a hat and a person climbing the stairs in the mansion. All these scenes of movements give an indication to the audience that something is going to happen inside the mansion.

With these background, let me move to the story in detail from the first dialogue in the film from which point the film’s story moves with a fast-paced narratives.

Thakur Chandra Singh (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), with his drink, is waiting for a person he has called. He hears the sound of his footsteps and see a young man who introduces himself as Veeru (Pomy Dev). He is a contract killer whose services was hired by Thakur Chandra. He has kept the brief case containing the cash of Rs.10 lakhs for the job. While sharing a drink with Thakur Chandra, Veeru asks as to who is to be killed. Thakur replies that the victim is himself. Veeru is surprised because why he should spend a large sum of money when he can kill himself by taking poison. Thakur replies that he is from a royal lineage and he wants to die like a royal man. Out of curiosity, Veeru asks him as to why he wants to die. Thakur replies that he would reveal the reasons if assures him to keep it secret. Veeru assures him upon which he gives him a photograph and starts letting out the secret. When he has barely started to speak, Thakur suddenly slumps on his table with a knife someone has penetrated on his back killing him instantaneously.

Veeru runs out the room looking for the killer when he sees the man in hat (Manohar Singh) enters Thakur’s room, picking up some documents from the drawer. After he leaves, a girl in white comes near the dead body of Thakur and removes the knife without any expression. She is Manju (Dolly Minhas) and goes back to her own house by driving a car parked outside the mansion which belongs Dinesh Hingoo. Veeru loses sight of her. The caretaker of the mansion, Nathu (Alok Nath) informs Thakur’s close friend and legal adviser Katju (Manohar Singh) about the murder. He tells him that he is rushing to the house and asks him not to touch anything in Thakur’s room. Katju reaches the house so also the police team to investigate the murder. After some time, the Superintendent of Police (SP), Rane (Suresh Oberoi) also reaches the spot.

The outcome of the spot investigation is that the murder weapon, knife is missing. The brief case containing Rs.10 lakhs is intact. The visitor’s drinking glass does not have any fingerprints. One handkerchief with a letter ‘M’ is found near the dead body and one cigar cleaner is found in the compound of the mansion which later is identified by Katju as his own. The fragrance of scent on handkerchief suggests that it may belong to a lady. Before leaving the murder spot, Rane also meets Katju, who was smoking his pipe in an adjoining room and asks some basic questions one of which is as to why Thakur remained unmarried. But he shows his ignorance.

After the murder of Thakur, Veeru returns to his den and report to his boss, Thompson (Raza Murad) that Thakur has offered him Rs. 10 lakhs for the job but before that someone has killed him and he left the house without taking the brief case containing the cash. Thompson suspects that Veeru has double-crossed him for the money. After some heated arguments, Veeru leaves his den. Out of revenge, Thompson informs SP, Rane that Thakur was murdered by Veeru who had gone to his house in the night.

While SP, Rane has his team investigating the motive behind the murder of Thakur, Veeru has started his own investigation because he is also curious to know as to what secret Thakur was to share with him. SP, Rane visits a photography shop run by Ramkumar (Johny Lever) to enquire about Veeru who is his close friend as to where was Veeru last night. Ramkumar shows his ignorance. Before Rane was to arm-twist him to reveal, Veeru reaches to meet Ramkumar and reveals to Rane that he was indeed visited Thakur’s house in the last night but that does not prove that he was there to kill him. Rane leaves by telling him that next time, he would meet him with proof. Veeru gives the photograph which Thakur has given him to make an enlargement of the photograph and leaves. Later, this enlarged photograph is confiscated by Rane on his next visit to Ramkumar.

In the meanwhile the car hijacked by the girl in white is found in a red-light area. The police team reaches the red-light area for further investigation. Veeru has also followed the police team to look for the girl in white in the guise of a film producer looking for girls for the roles. He sees the same girl he had seen as girl in white, called Manju who is the daughter of a courtesan, Mohini Bai (Sharmila Tagore). Veeru tries to develop a close repo with Manju with a view to solving the murder mystery. With frequent meetings, Veeru and Manju fall in love with each other. She reveals to him that she has always been pestering her mother to know as to who is her father as she has a faint remembrance of playing with him in her childhood. But her mother refuses to divulge creating some misunderstanding between them. Manju has also a sleep disorder during which she walks in her sleep. During one such instance, she even tried to stab her mother who in the nick time save herself. Veeru has also seen her in that mode when he had gone to her house in the night for investigation. He was shocked to see her changing her dress in her sleepwalking mode without taking note of his presence.

At Thakur’s funeral, the police team and Veeru is present among others when they see Mohini Bai paying a floral tribute to Thakur. Police is intrigued by the presence of Mohini and Veeru at the funeral and wants to probe as to in what way they are connected with Thakur. SP Rane meets them one by one throwing some hints at them. But he is still clueless about the murderer as well as his motive. There are multiple persons who are in the radar of SP Rane as suspects in the murder of Thakur on the basis of the circumstantial evidence but he has no strong proof of murder against any one of them. The suspects are:

Veeru (Pomy Dev), the contract killer, who was present in the house when the murder of Thakur took place. But his fingerprints are not found on the whiskey glass which he shared with Thakur.

Manju (Dolly Minhas) who visited the house and removed the knife from the back of Thakur who was dead. Her fingerprints were found on the car’s key which she hijacked outside the mansion.

Katju (Manohar Singh), the legal adviser who took some documents from the drawer after the murder of Thakur.

Mohini (Sharmila Tagore), the courtesan who was in relationship with Thakur and Manju is their daughter. On the day of the murder her handkerchief with initial ‘M’ was found which was identified by her daughter, Manju in the police investigation. As revealed later, she has met Thakur Chandra in the evening about the future of their daughter, Manju.

Nathu (Alok Nath), the caretaker in Thakur’s house who opposed Thakur’s relationship with Mohini and hated her and her daughter, Manju.

Ramkumar (Johny Lever), the photographer friend of Veeru who was present outside the mansion when Veeru entered the mansion.

When SP Rane is almost close to solving the murder mystery, he comes to know from Katju during investigation that Thakur revised his Will in which his entire property was bequeathed to Manju instead of himself and Nathu in his earlier Will.

I have deliberately avoided covering the end of the film’s story to keep the murder mystery in suspense because the film is so engrossing that some readers of the Blog may like to watch this film. The real hero of the film is Suresh Oberoi in the role of Superintendent of Police investigating the murder mystery because of his fantastic performance and some light humoured dialogues delivered with serious expression. Manohar Singh in the role of the legal adviser to Thakur has given a good performance especially when he is pitted against Suresh Oberoi. Despite sucessfully keeping the audience’s curiosity for the identification of the murderer, the end seen scenes fall back on the style of the 1960s suspense thriller films which is a bit disappointing. The ‘speed-breakers’ in the fast-paced narratives of the story is two songs picturised on the Pomy Dev and Dolly Minhas which appear in the film more like item numbers.

The film had seven songs written by Majrooh Sultanpuri which were set to music by Anand-Milind. I present the first song, ‘aao milan kaa jashn manaaye tamaam raat’ to appear on the Blog. The song is rendered by Abhijeet Bhattacharya and Sadhana Sargam which is picturised on Pomy Dev and Golly Minhas. As I said earlier, the song does not have much context with the scene preceding it except to the extent that when Manju (Dolly Minhas) and her mother Mohini (Sharmila Tagore) are having a poignant discussion on the identity of her father, she receives a call from Veeru (Pomy Dev) to join him at a club in the evening. And she joins Veeru to dance with him.
