12th October was the date of birth of prominent Indian Urdu and Hindi poet, lyricist and dialogue writer Nida Fazli who’s birth name was Muqtida Hasan Nida Fazli. He was born in 1938, at New Delhi to a father who was also a well-known Urdu poet of his times. He had his education in Gwalior, where he also learnt English literature. Fazli moved to Bombay sometime in 1964 to earn a living. In 1965, eighteen years after the partition of India, his parents and other family members migrated to Pakistan. Fazli, however decided to stay back in India. The departure of his parents was an epochal event in his life, the pain and repercussions of which remained with him all his life.
In the early days of his career, he wrote in Dharmayug and Blitz. His poetic style attracted the notice of filmmakers and writers of Hindi and Urdu literature. His career improved when Kamal Amrohi, a filmmaker, approached him. The original songwriter Jan Nisar Akhtar working on the film ‘Razia Sultan’ (1983) had died before completing the project. Nida Fazli wrote the final two songs and attracted other Hindi filmmakers.
The most popular film songs from his pen may have been for the films ‘Nazraana Pyar Ka’ (1980), ‘Red Rose’ (1980), ‘Biwi-o-Biwi’ (1981), ‘Sarfarosh’ (1999) etc. etc. But the one song that is always on everyone’s lips is ‘tu iss tarah se meri zindagi mein shamil hain’ from ‘Aap Toh Aise Na Thhey’ (1980). He was a sought after writer for ghazal singers like Jagjit Singh with whom he teamed up to bring an album named ‘Insight’ (1994), which got appreciation for its soulful poetry and music. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2013 by the Government of India for his contribution to literature as also the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1998.
Today we have a song penned by Nida Fazli for the film “Nazraana Pyar Ka” with Hemant Bhosle as the music director. It is a duet by Kishore Kumar & Asha Bhosle. The song is lip synced by Neeta Mehta & Raj Kiran. Ashok Kumar, Sarika, Vijayendra Ghatge, Aruna Irani Shakti Kapoor, Deven Verma, Chandrasekhar, Raj Babbar, Sonika Gill etc. were the others in the cast.
“Nazraana Pyar Ka” was the story of Anuradha (Sarika), an orphan, who has found a mentor in kind-hearted Mahesh Kumar Gupta (Ashok Kumar). She decides to re-locate to the city and be close to him in Bombay. After a few misadventures, and being rescued by a gallant Kishore (Vijayendra), she settles down with Gupta, who would like her to marry his son, Raj Kumar (Raj Kiran). Anuradha has fallen in love with Kishore, but does not want to upset Gupta, and so she accordingly agrees to this marriage. But then, Raj brings home a beautiful young woman, who he has fallen in love with and got married to. After a few temper tantrums, Gupta does accept the new entrant as his daughter-in-law. What Gupta does not know is that this lady has married Raj to inherit his vast wealth and estate and be close to her lover, Prem Kishen (Shakti Kapoor), who also has an on-going affair with Anuradha. Things get really complicated when Prem is killed, and Anuradha is arrested by the police for killing him. This is an Indian film, so naturally things will sort themselves out for a happy ending.”
I think I should end this post with a small note about the male singer in today’s song. He was & is the laadla (darling) of the fans of film music across languages. He has sung in Bengali, Marathi, Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada, Bhojpuri, Malayalam, Odia and Urdu besides Hindi. There are numerous anecdotes connected with this versatile playback singer, musician and actor, quoted by his co-actors & singers available in public domain- so, I shall not write about them.
I shall also not mention that he was the youngest brother of veteran actor Ashok Kumar. He started his career as a chorus singer at Bombay Talkies where his older brother was already an actor. During the initial stage of his career, Kishoreda (as he was fondly addressed) was deeply inspired by singer K. L. Saigal and imitated his style of singing in some of his early films but later evolved his own, unique style & mainly worked on “yodelling” which was there in many of his songs. He had a great respect for poet and musician Rabindranath Tagore who influenced him in many ways.
Kishoreda’s first film appearance was in Shikari (1946), in which his brother, Ashok played the lead role. Music director Khemchand Prakash gave Kishoreda a chance to sing “Marne Ki Duayen Kyon Mangu” for the film ‘Ziddi’ in 1948, which was lip-synced by Dev Anand. Kishoreda was the voice for Rajesh Khanna post ‘Aradhana'(1969). For the two decades between 1948 & 1969, he was a singer, actor who also became a music director with ‘Jhumroo’ (1961) & filmmaker with ‘Door Gagan Ki Chaon Mein’ (1964).
But what ever I have stated above is also public knowledge. I shall also not mention his popular songs or all the actors for whom he has lent his voice. I will not talk about a song from ‘Half Ticket’ where he has sung in dual voice.
Kishore Kumar (Kishoreda) dreamt of retiring to Khandwa (his birthplace) after he finished the assignments on hand. But that was not to be. He died of a heart attack on 13th October 1987 & bid adieu to this mortal world. Incidentally, that date happened to be his older brother Ashok Kumar’s (Dadamoni) 76th birthday. Kishoreda’s funeral procession was one of the largest for a non-political film personality, with an estimated total of around five-to-seven thousand people in various locations around Bombay. He was cremated at Khandwa as per his wishes. A larger crowd gathered upon the arrival of his body in Khandwa for cremation.
There is one person amongst the followers of Atulsongaday who has visited Khandwa & written about it in a few posts of his.
I have read somewhere (either offline or online) that Dadamoni stopped celebrating his birthday after 1987. If we, the fans Kishoreda, miss him so much; we can only think of Dadamoni’s emotional state. Thinking of Dadmoni also today on what would have been his 114th birthday.
Missing you terribly Kishoreda.
