‘Mast’ (1999) was a romantic fantasy film which was produced and directed by Ramgopal Varma. The cast included Urmila and Aftab Shivdasani (debutant) in the lead roles supported by Dalip Tahil, Smita Jaykar, Govind Namdeo, Antara Mali, Niraj Vora, Raju Mavani, Suhas Bhalekar, Rajpal Yadav (debutant) etc.

As admitted by Ramgopal Varma in an interview with rediff.com just before the release of the film, during his younger days, he had an obsession with Sridevi. In the later years, he felt that most of the teenagers may be fantasising in their minds about their obsessions with actors. So, he felt that this obsession with an actor can be made into a musical romantic film. Ramesh Khatkar and Vinod Ranganathan jointly wrote the story, screenplay and dialogues for the film based on Ramgopal Varma’s own experiences.

The story is about a Pune-based college-going teenager who is excessively obsessed with an actress on the screen to such an extent that he neglects his studies and fails in his graduation examination. He is admonished by his father because of which he runs away from his house and comes to Mumbai. When he sees the actress in reality, he is shocked to observe her pathetic condition in her house due to the cruel behaviour of her uncle and his family. He cannot tolerate her sufferings. So, one day, after watching Mallika getting whipped by her uncle, convinces her to run away with him. He and Mallika take shelter in his Pune house where she experiences the real and loving family of his parents as opposed to her uncle’s family.

The story in detail is as under:

The film opens with a fantasy song in which Kittu (Aftaab Shivdasani) imagines himself in the company of a star actress, Mallika (Urmila Mathodkar). The lyrics of the song give an indication to the audience that Kittu has developed a strong obsession with Mallika to the extent that he fantasies her. Kittu stays in Pune with his parents, (Smita Jaykar and Dalip Tahil) and a sister. The walls of his room is full of Mallika’s pictures. Instead of attending his college, he goes to cinema hall to watch films in which Mallika is starring. He gets reprimanded from his father for very poor marks in his examination.

One day, Kittu sitting in his room looks at a full poster of Mallika and once again goes in fantasy of singing with her. When his sister comes to his room, his fantasy gets broken. He tells his sister that he was with Mallika who has come out of her poster and met him. However, her presence has made Mallika to go back to her poster. The sister is alarmed and informs her parent that Kittu has gone mad as he has started getting hallucination. Annoyed with his bad performance in college and now with his obsession, his father tears off all the pictures of Mallika on his room’s wall. Shocked by his father’s action, Kittu leaves the house and Pune for Mumbai and lands in Bandra. An auto rickshaw driver drops Kittu at the gate of Mallika’s bungalow. Obviously, the gatekeeper drives him away. A dejected Kittu walks back and a few workers of a nearby restaurant make fun of him. However, the restaurant owner, Usman Bhai (Neeraj Vohra) comes to his rescue and gives him a job in the restaurant. Kittu is happy that the restaurant is very close to Mallika’s bungalow.

One day, the restaurant gets a home delivery order from Mallika’s bungalow which Usman Bhai entrusts to Kittu knowing his obsession with Mallika. He visits her house, delivers the food but gets to see only glimpses of her. He is still happy that at least he has seen her in person. However, his dream of talking to her in person to convey his feelings about her as a fan is not yet fulfilled.

Soon Kittu gets an opportunity to watch her shooting in Mehboob Studio with the influence of Usman Bhai. During the shooting break, he meets her and tells as to how much he loves her films etc. He also reveals her that he has run away from his house in Pune to meet her personally. In the meantime, her uncle (Govind Namdev) comes and gets angry with Mallika for talking to a stranger. He orders him to move out from her. The incidence affects Kittu and shares his experiences with Usman Bhai during the shooting at Mehboob Studio.

Later on, Kittu learns from Usman Bhai that Mallika has been looked after by her maternal uncle’s family since she lost her mother during her childhood. She has been in the film industry since her childhood. Her uncle has been exploiting her with an iron hand. Although she is a star actor with a happy face, in reality, she is meek and has no power to spent her own money or socialise. Effectively, once her shootings get over, she is almost in the cage made up of the four walls of her bungalow.

In one night, Kittu looks from his restaurant window toward Mallika’s bungalow and observes from the silhouette that Mallika is being punished by her uncle with a whip. Kittu runs towards the bungalow, climbs the wall and reaches her room. He hits her uncle from behind by a plant pot and convinces Mallika to quickly run away with him while her uncle lies unconscious. They catch a train for Pune and arrive at Kittu’s house. The mother and the sister are relieved that Kittu has come back home. After understanding the serious problems faced by Mallika from her uncle, she is accommodated in the house without the knowledge of Kittu’s father. Later, Mallika is shifted to stay with Kittu’s college friend, Nisha (Antara Mali) who is in love with him. For the first time, Mallika is feeling great as she has all the freedom and also the love of a family and a friend.

In Mumbai, Mallika’s uncle after recovering from his unconsciousness, files a case of abduction of Mallika without knowing as to who have abducted her since he was hit by Kittu with his back. The police traces Mallika in Kittu’s house. Both Kittu and his father are taken into police custody for ‘kidnapping’ Mallika. After knowing that Kittu and his father have been subjected to the thrid degree methods by police, she turns herself to the police and tells them that due to ill-treatment by her uncle and his family, Kittu has rescued her and she has willingly joined him to leave her bungalow for Pune. Mallika’s uncle is arrested and released only after he assures the police that he will keep himself away from Mallika’s life.

Mallika’s few days of stay in Pune has given her indication that Nisha was in love with Kittu and she has treated her nicely when staying with her. In order not to become an obstacle in their love, Mallika returns home without informing Kittu who is devasted by the news. Kittu and Nisha visit Mallika in Mumbai during her shooting and meet her in her dressing room where Nisha explains to Mallika that although she loves Kittu but she has also known that he has always been in love with Mallika. So, it was her false assumption that Kittu was going to marry Nisha.

With confusion cleared, the film ends with Kittu marrying Mallika in the presence of all his friends and co-workers who supported him during his short stay in Mumbai.

The film was released about 26 years back when it flopped on the box office front. I have watched the film only few day’s back and I found the film refreshing with a high score on its direction and cinematography. As a newcomer, Aftab Shivdasani has performed well. Probably, the audience did not expect this romanced filled fantasy genre of film from Ramgopal Varma after the tremendous success of his film, ‘Satya’ (1998) in ‘gangster’ genre.

The film has nine songs written by Nitin Raikwar and set to music by Sandeep Chowta. Almost all the songs have been picturised as the cinematic fantasy songs in line with the theme of the film’s story. I present the first song, ‘poochho na yaar kyaa huaa’ from the film to appear on the Blog. The song is rendered by Sonu Nigam, Sadhana Sargam and Nitin Raikwar. The refrain of the song is adapted from a song from the film, ‘Zamaane Ko Dikhaana Hai’ (1981) which is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and set to music by R D Burman. Rest of the song and the musical composition are done by Nitin Raikwar and Sandeep Chowta respectively.

One of the features of the song is that Sonu Nigam has rendered the song by resorting to voice modulations. For instance, Sonu Nigam sings in his normal voice, the refrain of the song. However, the rap parts of the song is rendered by modulating his voice differently. The narative parts of the song are rendered by Nitin Raikwar, sometime mimicking the voices of Shatrughan Sinha, Mithun Chakravarty etc.

The context of the song is that Kittu (Aftab Shivdasani) has returned from Mallika’s (Urmila Mathondkar) bungalow after delivering the pizza ordered by her. His fellow workers along with the owner of the restaurant, Usman Bhai (Neeraj Vora) are eager to know from him as to the experience of his first home delivery in Mallika’s bungalow. Kittu shares with them his fantasized experiences. The reality is that he has delivered the pizza to a maid servant and he could only see the glimpse of Mallika walking on the mezzanine floor of her bungalow.

The beauty of this song is in its refrain created by Majrooh Sultanpuri-R D Burman combination which, perhaps, gave confidence to Sandeep Chowta to mix it with his rap and narrative parts of the composition. Incidentally, both the original as well as the song under discussions were picturised with the fantasies of the protogonists in the films.

Lyrics

poochho na yaar kyaa huaa
unkaa deedaar kyaa huaa
sapne mere rang laaye
haan laaye
usne kahaa main teree hoon jaanam
poochho na yaar kyaa huaa

ye sab huaa kaise
pizza kaa le ke order
main gayaa bangle ke andar
maine ting ting bell bajaai
phir kyaa honaa thhaa ye bhai
mere pyaar kee khushboo se wo
kholne darwaazaa aayee
lad gayee ye donon aankhen
thhodee sharmaayee muskaayee
uske seene mein bhee dhak dhak
mere seene mein bhee dhak dhak
uske seene mein bhi dhak dhak
mere seene mein bhi dhak dhak

phir kyaa huaa
phir kyaa huaa
phir kyaa huaa
phir kyaa huaa

bol na yaar
poochho na yaar kyaa huaa
unkaa deedaar kyaa huaa
sapne mere rang laayen
haan laayen
usne kaaha main teree hoon jaan
poochho na yaar kyaa huaa..aa

kyun puraane record kee tarah atak rahaa hai
haan
yaar
teraa hameshaa kaa yahee lochaa hai
intrest mein laata hai aur atakaa detaa hai
oye saala
tere ko maaloom
apne ko kitnaa khushi hotaa hai
aage bataa

cellular pe call aayaa
usne no kaa batan dabaayaa
telephone kaa wo receiver
rakh diya jhat se ulat kar
hosh thhaa behosh bhee thhaa
mere dil mein josh bhee thhaa
maine bolaa main hoon aashiq
tumko chaahoon betahaasaa
maine uskaa haathh pakadkar
keh diyaa jo bhee kahnaa thhaa
maine uska haathh pakadkar kah diyaa jo bhee kehnaa thhaa

phir kyaa huaa
phir kyaa huaa
phir kyaa huaa
phir kyaa huaa

bataa na yaar
poochho na yaar kyaa huaa
unka deedaar kyaa huaa
sapne mere rang laayen
haan laayen
usne kahaa main teree hoon jaanaa
poochho na yaar kyaa huaa

ye to kamaal ho gayaa
tu to malaamaal ho gayaa
mohabbat ke khazaane mein
ek minute
ek minute
usne kuchh kahaa kee nahee haan

usne meree aankhon mein aankhen daal kar kahaa
ho gayee hoon main tumhaaree
dil maine tumhen de daala
mujhko duniya kee nahee parwaah
tum ho majnoo main hoon lailaa
kaun ho tum kahaan se aaye
tumse main ye na poochoongee
tum miley sab kuchh milaa hai
tumko jeewan bhar chaahoongee

phir kahaa baaton baaton mein
le lo mujhko tum baahon mein
phir kahaa baaton baaton mein
le lo mujhko tum baahon mein

ab bas huaa
ab bas huaa
ab bas huaa
ab bas huaa

tu band kar phenkanaa
pakdaa gayaa dekh naa

karte hain ham ye duaa uss khudaa se
ho jaaye sachh teraa sapnaa yaaraa
la la la la la la laa..aa
