hullo to all of Atuldom

Yesterday (13 august 2019) was the birth anniversary of our dear Sridevi, hailed as the first female superstar of Bollywood. I was not liking it that we had let it go without a post. Then last thing before I switched off for the day, I saw a song on some satellite channel and had my ‘eureka’ moment. I found a song from the later period of Sridevi’s career when she had started experimenting with the characters she played.

The song was from the 1997 Raj Kanwar directed and Boney Kapoor produced “Judaai”. The movie starred Sridevi alongside Urmila Matondkar and Anil Kapoor with Kadar Khan, Johnny Lever, Farida Jalal, Upasana Singh, Junior Mehmood, Paresh Rawal, Dinesh Hingoo, Saeed Jaffrey and two sweet child actors. Poonam Dhillon had a special appearance. The movie was a remake of a 1994 Telugu film “Shubhalagnam”.

It was a story of a lady Kajal (Sridevi) who gets her honest and loving husband (Anil Kapoor) married to his boss’s niece (Urmila) in exchange for money in her quest to become rich quickly. She gets this done much against her husband’s wishes and she faces social problems when she realises that it is not possible to remain your ex-husband’s legal wife after having divorced him and practically sold him to another lady. The film received mixed reviews for its simple and clichéd plot and execution. But the performances of the lead actresses were appreciated. This was Sridevi’s last film appearance before she took a sabbatical to lead a family life. Sridevi and Johnny Lever played the children of Kadar Khan and Farida Jalal.

Incidentally today happens to be the 62nd birthday of Johnny Lever. He was brought up as John Prakash Rao Janumala. He had to drop out of studies as his family faced financial problems and he pithed in by doing odd jobs including selling pens on the streets by mimicking Bollywood stars etc. At a program in his father’s plant (Hindustan Lever Limited) he mimicked some senior officers and the workers there gave him his stage name JOHNNY LEVER. He started out his career doing stage shows Kalyanji Anandji Nite, Tabassum Hit Parade etc which served as his launchpad. He has been entertaining the world since the 80s. His daughter Jamie is following in his footsteps and is a comedian-actor-singer. Here is wishing him a long and healthy life.

Todays’ song is sung by Bali Brahmabhatt, Alka Yagnik and Shankar Mahadevan. Nadeem Shravan are the music composers and Sameer was the lyricist. It is a party song that celebrates the birthday of Sridevi’s character’s daughter. We have Upasana Singh, Kadar Khan, Sridevi, Urmila and Anil Kapoor singing and Junior Mehmood is also there in the scene.

So, here is a song which sings the mind of most males of the species. I am not judging anybody. 🙂 my statement is based on all the husband-wife jokes that are constant on the various social media forums. 🙂

Has anyone seen today’s google doodle?!!!!

It is dedicated to our dear Mogambo a.k.a Durgaprasad Bharadwaj a.k.a Chaudhry Baldev Singh a.k.a Thakur Durjan Singh a.k.a Balwant Rai a.k.a Kishorilal a.k.a Amrish Puri.  He would have been 87 today.

Feels like they have appreciated some one close to our family. The doodle shows him in the look he sported for DDLJ – ‘Dilwaale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ (1995) as Chaudhry Baldev Singh. That movie is remembered as much for the last scene where the Chaudhry tells his daughter

jaa beta jaa. Apni Raj ke paas jaa. Jaa Simran, jee le apni zindagi jaa beta jaa

The last scene can be seen on YT at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAaL5HZC5YI. The movie is remembered for this last scene, as much for all the romance and romantic songs that it had.

Can anyone forget his character ‘Dong’ in the movie ‘Tehalka’ (1992) where he kept repeating “Dong kabhi wrong nahi hota” much on the lines of “Mogambo khush hua” from ‘Mr. India’ (1987). Here I must admit that I haven’t seen ‘Tehalka’ but if I am not wrong, ‘Dong’ and his song “Shom Shom Shom Shomo sha sha” is the only thing in public memory from that movie.

There have been similar movies where this much-loved character actor, with a very distinct voice, was the only saving grace. He has played an almost equal number of benevolent characters as in the 1999 release ‘Gair’ as he has played his malevolent characters. He has tried his hand at singing (the above-mentioned song of ‘Tehalka’ was in his voice) and shaking a leg too and looked as if he enjoyed dancing.

Today’s song shows him in his dancing element. It is from the 1998 Rajkumar Santoshi produced and directed ‘China Gate’. It has music by Anu Malik with Sameer as the lyricist. The song shows him dancing in the company of the folk dancer played by Urmila Matondkar, KD Chandran, Tinnu Anand, Viju Khote, Jagdeep, Anjaan Shrivastav, Sameer Soni, and Harish Patel.

Remembering Amrish Puri in this very lively avataar

Hullo to all in Atuldom

Wishing A.R. Rahman a very Happy Birthday!!! He turns 51 today. This music director started his life at a young age of 11 when he played in the orchestra of composers of the stature of Illyaraja, M. S. Viswanathan, M.K. Arjunan (of the Malayalam industry) etc. He has accompanied Zakir Hussain (Hindustani music), Kunnaikudi Vaidyanathan (Carnatic music) etc. on world tours. He is a trained Key- board player along with mastering the piano, synthesizer, harmonium and guitar but is a self-confessed fan of the synthesizer as he feels it is an ideal combination of music and technology. He is known to combine western classical music and carnatic music with folk, reggae, jazz rock etc which gives hours of listening pleasure.

His debut in movies came after his stint as a jingle composer for ads. His first movie was Mani Ratnam’s “Roja” (1992) which got him that year’s national award. His Bollywood debut came in 1995 with Ram Gopal Varma’s “Rangeela” though he was already famous in the Hindi-speaking regions of India through the dubbed versions of his South-Indian films.

Today on his birthday we will have a song from his Hindi debut film “Rangeela”. This movie is the story of a young girl (Urmila Matondkar) who is a chorus dancer in the movies with a passion for filmy dances. She has a childhood friend (Amir Khan) who sells movie tickets outside cinema halls in black. There is also Jackie Shroff who plays a matinee idol who spots this chorus dancer as she practices in the early morning hours on the beach side. He promotes her in the industry and she becomes a star but when it comes to love and marriage, she goes back to her childhood friend. So that then was the story of Rangeela in short.

Today’s song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Aditya Narayan and Mehboob was the lyricist. The song is Urmila’s dream sequence where she is seen dancing through the streets of Navi Mumbai and the local train station in that area of Mumbai. This movie got A.R. Rahman two of his fifteen (Hindi) Filmfare awards – Best Music and R D Burman award for best new talent. {He has sixteen Filmfare awards for his South Indian films}. The movie gave Urmila Matondkar and her designer Manish Malhotra instant recognition in the movies. The film marked the return of Asha Bhonsle with two songs, she had long retired from accepting playback singer awards like her sister. She received a Filmfare special award for the other song – Tanha tanha yahaan pe jeena”.

Song-Yaai re yaai re zor laga ke naache re (Rangeela)(1995) Singers-Asha Bhonsle, Aditya Narayan, Lyrics-Mehboob Kotwal MD-A R Rahman

Lyrics

yaai re
yaai re
zor laga ke naache re
yaai re

mil ke dhoom machaaye re
chal mere sang sang
le le duniya ke rang
ho ja rangeela re
rang rang rangeela re
yaai re
yaai re
zor laga ke naache re
yaai re
yaai re
mil ke dhoom machaaye re
chal mere sang sang
le le duniya ke rang
ho ja rangeela re
rang rang rangeela re

itne chehron mein apne chehre ki pehchaan toh ho
pehchaan toh ho
bade bade naamon mein apna bhi naam o nishan toh ho
pehchan toh ho
jeene mein phir toh kya baat ho o
din naya aur nayi raat ho o
har ghadi bas khushi saath ho o o
yaai re
yaai re
zor laga ke naache re
yaai re
yaai re
mil ke dhoom machaaye re
chal mere sang sang
le le duniya ke rang
ho ja rangeela re (rangeela re)
rang rang rangeela re (rangeela re)

arrey
yaaron mere paas toh aao
meri mushqil door bhagaao
cadbury bole main meetha hoon
amul bole main meetha hoon
horlicks bole main achchha hoon
complan bole main achchha hoon
kya sabne socha main bachcha hoon
chocolate khane me tension hai
doodh peene mein tension hai
tension tension tension

laanat hai ji us par
duniya mein hi rehkar
duniya me jo jeene ke andaaz ko naa jane
maathe ya haathon pe
chaand ya taaron mein
kismat ko dhoondhe par khud mein kya hai ye naa jaane
khudpe hi hamko yakeen ho,
mushkilen raah ki aasaan ho
donon haathon mein ye jahaan ho o
yaai re
yaai re
zor laga ke naache re
yaai re
yaai re
mil ke dhoom machaaye re
chal mere sang sang
le le duniya ke rang
ho ja rangeela re
rangeela re ae
rang rang rangeela re
rangeela re
