Today 16th October 2025 is the seventy eighth birthday of actress Hema Malini. She was born on this day in the year 1948. We wish her a very happy birthday and a healthy and peaceful life ahead. During my growing years in the seventies to early eighties I get to watch many Hindi Films where Hema Malini was the lead actress. She was ruling the roost and she was given the nickname of Dream Girl of Hindi Cinema.
Today on the occasion of her birthday I was looking for a song from this decade 1971-1980. I had a song in mind but then I kept it aside. After changing my mind I started looking for a song where R.D. Burman was the composer of the movie. That led me to this song from the movie ‘Alibaba Aur 40 Chor-1980. So I was able to find a song from the seventies as planned.
I have not yet watched this movie. However I am well aware of its song ‘jaadoogar jaadoo kar jaayegaa’ which is already posted here on the blog. I could locate another song from the movie that was familiar to me. However, I am not presenting that song today. I am presenting a lesser known and also a lesser heard song from the movie which is picturised on Hema Malini.
‘Alibaba Aur 40 Chor-1980’ was directed by Umesh Mehra for Eagle Films, Bombay. This movie was an Indo-Soviet Co-Production as mentioned in Geet Kosh Vol-V. The cast of this movie has Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Zeenat Aman, Prem Chopra, Ralan Bekov, Franz Mrkchan, Madan Puri, Mac Mohan, Pinchoo Kapoor, Sofiko Chaureli, Yakub Mohammad, Janeev, Yousaf Ahmdeev, Hamja Umarov, Narliv and others. This movie has five songs including total seven soundtracks for this movie. Other than the five songs two soundtracks are for Music and title music of this movie. Lyrics for the five songs are by Anand Bakshi and music is composed by R.D. Burman.
In the picturisation of the song the actress is being put up in the market place for auction. She calls out to her beloved to come and rescue her. Buyers are placing their bids for her while the hero Dharmendra is searching for Hema Malini. He reaches her just as the song ends, and I am sure he succeeds in rescuing her from the clutches of the bad guys in the movie. 🙂
The audio version of this song is a longer version. Tthe video has one stanza less. The tune of this song sounds similar to some otherother Pancham composition, but I am not able to put my finger to it.
Let us listen to this song now. Once again we wish Hema Malini a very Happy Birthday!!!
