‘Prem Geet’ (1981) was produced by Lakhan Sinha and Pawan Kumar under the banner of Ramayana Chitra. The film was directed by Sudesh Issar, father of Puneet Issar. Raj Babbar and Anita Raj were in the lead roles with the supporting cast of Rajni Sharma, Sowcar Janaki, Madan Puri, Shashi Ranjan, Sajjan, Raj Kishore, Viju Khote, Vandana Rane, Yasmeen etc. It was the first released film of Anita Raj and also of Jagjit Singh as the music director.

Producers Lakhan Sinha and Pawan Kumar are elder brother and Secretary, respectively of Shatrughan Sinha. Ramayana Chitra is the home film production banner of Shatrughan Sinha. Director, Sudesh Issar started his filmy career as assistant director to Raj Khosla. He assisted him in ‘Ek Musaafir Ek Haseena’ (1962), ‘Wo Kaun Thhee’ (1964), ‘ Mera Saaya’ (1966), ‘Anita’ (1967), ‘Chiraag’ (1969) and ‘Mera Gaon Mera Desh’ (1971). ‘Sauda’ (1974) was Sudesh Issar first film as an independent director.

The story of the film is as under:

Ashok Bhardwaj (Raj Babbar) is the poet by inclination. His father (Madan Puri) and the mother (Sowkar Janaki) are unaware of their son’s works as a poet because he uses his pseudo name, ‘Nishant’ for his poetry. His father wants him to pursue his higher education to become a doctor. So, he is studying in a medical college. Asha (Rajni Sharma), a close friend of Ashok’s sister is in love with Ashok but he treats her nothing more than his sister’s friend.

On a college picnic to Shimla, Ashok meets Shikha (Anita Raj), a well-known dancer who was reciting one of his poems while strolling in a lawn outside their guest house. He meets her and introduces himself as ‘Nishant’. But she treats him like a road side Romeo who is trying to impress her by impersonating Nishant. By the time, Ashok is trying to prove himself as Nishant by taking his college friends to her guest house, she has already left Shimla.

Back to Mumbai, Ashok feels insulted that Shikha refuses to believe him to be the poet, Nishant. But he gets another opportunity to have one more opportunity with Shikha. Deepak Agrawal (Viju Kotak) has arranged a get together in his house for a honorable guest for which he has invited Shikha. She agrees on one condition that he should also invite Nishant, which he agrees as he is also his friend. Both Ashok and Shikha meet in Agrawal’s house in a hostile way thinking that he has managed to come here also. However, when Agrawal invites Nishant to sing his latest poem which he does. Shikha is ashamed that she has insulted Nishant badly. She invites Ashok to her dance class and both convey their love for each other. Soon both of them form a dance troupe in which she dances and he sings with his poems. The dance troupe become very popular. The romantic relationship between Ashok and Shikha become stronger.

In the meanwhile, Ashok’s father has fixed his marriage with Asha while Ashok insists on his marriage with Shikha. Somehow, Ashok manages to convince his father for his marriage with Shikha but now she is not ready to marry him. It transpires that she is suffering from some serious ailment. Ashok’s friend, Dr Amar (Shashi Bhushan) conducts a detailed examination of her which turns out to be the brain tumor in a terminal stage. Ashok tells Dr Amar not to disclose the illness to Shikha so that she can live happily in her remaining life.

Akaash marries Shikha with the consent of his father to whom he discloses the state of her health while his mother and sister have their initial reservations and have no idea of her illness. However, after the marriage, they also reconcile with Shikha because of her pleasing nature. After few months, Shikha suffers from dizziness and vomiting which initially thought to be the effect of her pregnancy. However, her gynecologist (Shammi) refers her for a complete check-up when Shikha comes to know about her terminal illness. She questions Dr Amar who had earlier carried a detailed health check-up. He reveals her that Akaash and his father are already aware of the status of her terminal illness who had told him not to reveal anything to her. At this stage, she tells her doctor not to disclose the fact that she is aware of her health status. She takes, Asha into confidence and requests her to take care of Akaash after her death.

On her birthday, Shikha gives her dance performance for a charity show on a song which in nutshell is her thanks giving swan song. Through the songs and the dance performance, she conveys her gratitude to Akaash and his family for providing all the happiness in her life for her last six months. She collapses while giving the finale to her dance performance. Akaash runs towards the stage and holds her head on his lap when she takes her last breath.

The film ends with the funeral of Shikha when Asha slowly walks towards Akaash.

Prem Geet (1981) had seven songs written by Indeewar and set to music by Jagjeet Singh. Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I am presenting the 3rd song, ‘khwaabon ko sachh main kar loon’ to appear on the Blog. The song is rendered by Suresh Wadkar and is picturised on Raj Babbar and Anita Raj.

The context of the song is that both Ashok and Shikha have formed a troupe in which Shikha presents her dance performance and Ashok sings his own poems for her dances. The song under discussion is presented with Shikha’s dance for a charity show organised by Ashok’s friend, Dr. Amar (Shashi Bhushan). Towards the end of the song, Ashok’s father, Madan Puri arrives to watch the show. Seeing his father seated in the front seat, Ashok runs away from the stage because he is not aware of his son’s ‘extra-curricular activities’.

Prakashchandra ji has given me some additional inputs about the film in an e-mail message. He says that his comments, after submitting, invariably fail to appear on the Blog.

The sum and substance of his inputs are that ‘Prem Geet’ (1981) is broadly based on Shaknar Nag’s Kannada super hit musical film, ‘Geetha’ (1981) in which the late Shankar Nag and Akshatha Rao were in the lead roles. The HIndi film has been customised to suit the Hindi film audience. [My take: The basic premises in both the films are more or less the same – the heroine suffers from terminal illness and she keeps it secret. In the end, she dies]. Sowcar Janaki acted in both ‘Geetha’ and ‘Prem Geet’ in the mother’s role. By the way, Akshatha Rao, is the sister of Arundhati Nag, wife of Shankar Nag.

Sometimes comments fail to appear because wordpress sends them to spam, and it seems to the person that the comment disappear. These comments have to be unspammed and then they appear in the comment section. But in case of Prakashchandra, I cannot find any comments that go to spam where I could unspam them.
