We are moving a bit away from the Rare/Rarely Heard song series of Asha Bhosle and turn to a beautiful mujra by Lata Mangeshkar. The song is “Dil Ka Karar Layi” from “Kundan” (1972). The song is penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri and composed by Ganesh.

I used to love this song after its release and till about the early 1980s when it stopped playing on Radio Ceylon (SLBC). Recently when Atul Ji posted another song from the same movie, I suddenly remembered this song.

As mentioned in earlier posts, “Kundan”(1972) was directed by Prayagraj for R M Arts productions, Bombay. This movie starred Shatrughan Sinha, Vijayshree, Ranjeet, Lakshmi Chhaya, Veena Tiwari, Shekhar Purohit, Jayshree T, etc. Ram Mohan and Jeevan made special appearances in this movie.

The story as per IMDB:

A dacoit is a human-being so is a police officer. Happiness and sorrow, love and hate are typical characteristics of a human-being.

The story of “KUNDAN” is also the story of such a human-being.

Dacoit Kundan is exactly like his father, Dacoit Babar Singh. Once, while escaping from the police, he reaches a Wedding Mandap and to escape from the eyes of the police, he covers his face with the bride-groom’s “Sehra” and even completes seven rounds of the holy fire with Ganga, but when the police get suspicious, he throws the “Sehra” and runs away.

Later on Kundan falls in love with a dancing girl. He kidnaps her and marries her.

Once, Kundan comes to know from Geeta Thakuriyan that 20 years ago her child had been kidnapped by Kundan’s father. Touching the feet of the Thakuriyan, Kundan vows that if Babar Singh had kidnapped her son, he would bring him back to her.

When Kundan meets his father, the latter agrees to return the child to the Thakuriyan, but before he could give him any information he is killed by the bullets of the police. Who was the son of Geeta Thakuriyan? Did she get him back? How did Kundan fulfill his vow? What happened to that Ganga whom Kundan had married? The answer to these and many more questions you will get by seeing “KUNDAN” (From the official press booklets)

I apologise for the grammatical errors in the above story/synopsis. I have tried to correct as much obvious errors.

I would like to take this opportunity to discuss the music and songs created by composer Ganesh Ram Prasad Sharma, or simply, Ganesh.

As we all know, Ganesh was active mainly during the late 1960s and the 1970s, composing for a range of medium- and low-budget Hindi films. While he didn’t enjoy the same mainstream fame as giants like R.D. Burman or Laxmikant Pyarelal, his work is fondly remembered by collectors and listeners of rare Hindi film soundtracks for its melodious sincerity, emotional depth, and variety of moods.

Ganesh composed for mainly social dramas, thrillers and romantic types of films with modest budgets. His music often stood out as one of the stronger aspects of these films. He worked with well-known playback singers such as Mohd. Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle, etc. His lyricists included writers like Naqsh Lyallpuri, Hasrat Jaipuri, and Asad Bhopali — poets who could match his melodic sensibility.

Ganesh had a gift for creating tuneful, easily memorable melodies, often set in simple but appealing scales. His songs tend to emphasize emotion and story over rhythmic experimentation. While his base was in Indian classical and semi-classical music, he skillfully incorporated Western instruments like electric guitar, accordion, and violins — but never at the cost of melody. He often used soft string sections, flute interludes, and tabla rhythms to create an intimate soundscape. His arrangements were never overdone — they complemented the singers and lyrics. His songs covered a variety of moods and themes like Romantic, Philosophical, Sad songs, Devotional and motivational.

This song is a mujra. The picturisation shows Shatrughan Sinha visiting the kotha of, possibly Vijayshree, who also lip syncs the song.

The video is very grainy and not very clear.
