‘Khoon Aur Sazaa’ (1985) was produced by K K Talwar and was directed by Hari Prasad Reddy. The cast included Girsh Karnad, Dilip Dhawan, Swaroop Sampat, Amrish Puri, Jagdeep, Prema Narayan, Dalip Tahil, Seema Deo, Kalpana Iyer, Piloo Wadia, Jalal Agha etc. Producer, K K Talwar is the maternal uncle of Rajesh Khanna who started as an associate producer of Rajesh Khanna’s film, ‘Roti’ (1974). Thereafter, he had turned producer with ‘Aashiq Hoon Bahaaron Ka’ (1977), ‘Sharda’ (1981) and ‘Baazi’ (1984) before he produced the film under discussion. This is the only Hindi film of Hari Prasad Reddy as a director.
The film was started sometime in 1980 with a title ‘Aakhir’. However, the film was delayed and got completed in 1984. The film’s song album was released with the title ‘Aakhir’ in 1984. However, at the time of applying for Censor Board’s certificate, the title was changed to ‘Khoon Aur Sazaa’. The film was certified by CBFC on December 28, 1984. It is not known whether the film got the theatrical release. As per IMDb, the film was released on November 22, 1985, as a TV Series. I am not sure about the authenticity of this information as I do not remember to have watched this film on TV.
The film’s lead actress, Swaroop Sampat is a former Miss India Universe (1979) which paved the way for her in Hindi films with her first released film, ‘Naram Garam’ (1981) followed by ‘Nakhuda’ (1981). She is the daughter of Gujarati theatre actor Bachu Sampat and Dr Mrudula Sampat. After working in about a dozen more films and TV serial. ‘Ye Hai Jo Zindagi’ (1984), Swaroop Sampat took a sabatical from Hindi films and married Paresh Rawal in 1987. During her sabatical period, she resumed her education and earned Ph.D in Education from the Univerity of Worcestor with specialisation in imparting learning skills in children with disabilities. Thereafter, she has been conducting workshops and training programmes for teachers who are associated with teaching children with disabilities. She has also written and published a book, ‘Learning Disabilities in a Nutshell: Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyspraxia’ (2021). She occasionally works in Hindi films, the last film being, ‘Uri – The Surgical Strike’ (2019).
The film’s lead actor, Dilip Dhawan was the son of character actor, Krishan Dhawan who was mostly seen in the films of Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand. Dilip Dhawan started his filmy career as a child artist in ‘Sangharsh’ (1968). His first film as a lead actor was ‘Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Daastaan’ (1978). He could not establish himself in the film industry as a lead actor. However, he became a well-known TV personality after the tremendous success of his T V Serial, ‘Nukkad’ in which his performance in the character of Guru was well appreciated. He produced the critically acclaimed film, ‘Saath Saath’ (1982). Thereafter, he worked mostly in character actor’s roles in films and few more T V Serials. He worked in about 35 films. Unfortunately, his career was cut short when he died of heart attack at the age of 45.
The story has been presented in the film through many flashback scenes. However, I present the story in a sequential order as under:
Shanta Prasad Saksena (Girish Karnad), a businessman lives with his wife, Kanta (Seema Deo) and a school going daughter, Shalini. His honesty in his business dealings makes him bankrupt. He sells his property to clear his huge loan taken from Dhanpat Rai (Sajjan). On a visit to Dhanpat Rai’s house to clear his dues, Shanta Prasad finds him murdered. He is framed for the murder as the gun was found with his fingerprints. Despite pleading his innocence as he had seen Madan Verma (Rajkumar Kapoor, also known as Colonel Kapoor) who had also knocked him down before running away picking up his bag with cash. However, the court pronounces imprisonment of 10 years to Shanta Prasad in the absence of evidence against Madan Verma who has been running a smuggling syndicate. Before being lodged in the jail, Shanta Prasad tells his wife that she should not reveal to Shalini about his imprisonment as it would affect her career as well as her marriage prospects .
After 10 years, Shanta Prasad is released from the jail. However, on the way, he is robbed by some thieves and he is not able to recall the exact location of his house as the address he had with him is now lost. He goes to a police station for lodging the complain of robbery when he meets his friend, Inspector Singh (Amrish Puri) who takes Shanta Prasad to his house for temporary stay until he is able to locate his house. Inspector Singh has got a grown up son, Vikki (Dalip Tahil) who loves Shalu (Swaroop Sampat) but she is not interested in him.
One day, Shanta Prasad on a stroll is hit by a taxi in which Shalu is travelling. She admits him in a hospital and takes care of him until he is discharged from the hospital. Shanta Prasad comes to know that Shalu lives with her mother and she is not aware of her father’s whereabouts.
The scene shift to an office where Sumit (Dilip Dhawan) gets angry with Geeta (Prema Narayan) who has given him a wrong sheet of a coloured sketch made by her friend, Shalu instead of the correct one. Sumit’s anger subsides as soon as he comes to know the origin of the sketch. He requests Geeta to use her good office to convince Shalu that he is really in love with her which she has been spurning him for long. Geeta successfully brings out the change in Shalu’s attitude towards Sumit and she falls in love with him. There is also a sub-plot in which Geeta and Jagdeep are in love with each other but his father is more interested in getting dowry than the suitable girl for him.
After being discharged from the hospital, Shalu takes Shanta Prasad to her house to introduce him to her mother which turns out to be an pleasant reunion of Shanta Prasad with his wife, Kanta and the daughter, Shalini who is now known as Shalu. Shanta Prasad makes a visit to Inspector Singh’s residence to introduce his daughter, Shalu where his son, Vikky receives them as his father has not yet returned from his tour. Vikky sees an opportunity to exploit the situation by exposing Shalu to be the daughter of the killer of Dhanpat Rai who has spent 10 years in prison which can break her relationship with Sumit.
Shanti Prasad and his wife Kanta visit Sumit’s house to discuss the marriage of Shalu with Sumit and to convince Sumit’s mother (Ashalata Wabgaonkar) the real situation about his jail term . As soon as Shanta Prasad sees Sumit’s mother, he recognises her as the wife of Madan Verma, the smuggler and the real killer of Dhanpat Rai. With these developments, parents of both sides are not interested in going ahead with the marriage.
One day, Shanta Prasad visits Madan Verma’s house with the intention of killing him. However, he finds Sumit with whom he entered into an intense arguments during which he reveals the actual happenings on the night when Dhanpat Rai was killed.
In the meanwhile, Vikki, the son of Inspector, Singh has been kidnapped and killed by Madan Verma’s gang to teach a lesson to Inspector Singh for not cooperating with Madan Verma for his smuggling operations. Sumit, the son of Madan Verma has also started his own way of verifying what Shanta Prasad had revealed to him. Both Inspector Singh and Sumit get opportunities – one to settle the score with Madan Verma and second to verify the veracity of claims by Shanta Prasad about his father.
On getting information that Madan Verma and his gang is pushing thorugh girls trafficking, Inspector Singh and his team intercept them by way of an ambush during which all his henchmen are killed. Madan Verma runs away from the scene with a bag full of cash. Sumit sees his father, Madan Verma entering the house with a bag where Shanta Prasad is waiting to kill him. Soon, Sumit comes to know the real face of his father when he confronts with him with the revelation of Shanta Prasad. He confesses that he killed Dhanpat Rai on some dispute. After hearing this, Shanta Prasad tries to kill Madan Verma which Sumit prevents and he hands over his father to Inspector Singh. With misunderstanding cleared, Sumit and Shalu get married.
The film had six songs written by Abhilash (5) and Indeewar (1) which were set to music by Jimmy. I present the first song from this film, ‘tere dil mein mujhe rahna hai’ which is rendered by Suresh Wadkar and Asha Bhosle on the lyrics of Abhilash. The song is picturised on Dilip Dhawan and Swaroop Sampat. The background to the song is that Sumit (Dilip Dhawan) is in love with Shalu (Swaroop Sampat) but initially she shows no interest in him. It is with the intervention of Sumit’s office colleague, Geeta (Prema Narayan) who is a friend of Shalu, that for the first time Sumit is able to meet Shalu and she falls in love with him. The song reflects their feelings for each other. The Audio Clip contains the full song.
The film’s music director, Jimmy started his filmy career as a singer in 1940s as James Singh. After the death of Khemchand Prakash, Jimmy got an opportunity to compose the remaining three songs for the film ‘Muqaddar’ (1950) in which he used his name as James Singh as the music director. In his last film, ‘Sachchi Ibaadat’ (1987), he gave the music in the name of Jimmy Singh. He composed the music for 14 films, 12 of which were under the name, Jimmy. He has also composed and sung a few non-film songs.
