Today’s song is from a much less known film – Aai Bahar-1946.
1946 was an important year in the history of Hindi films. This was the period when the impending Independence of India was on the Anvil and everyone knew that in the year 1947 it would take place. At the same time when the country was to be divided on the basis of Religion and another muslim country Pakistan was to come into existence. Many of the muslims in the film industry were excitedly awaiting their departure from India to the Utopia. This would, naturally, create a lot of vacancies in every department of film making. However, there was enough talent available in the remaining India to fill up the void. Hence from the year 1946 itself there were several debutantes. This made the year 1946 an year of Debuts of several new actors, directors, MDs, Lyricists etc etc.
The second World War had just ended, which had created inumerable millionaires, fed on black marketing and illegal trades in the war period. Many of them were keen on investing their ill gotten wealth in the film industry. Thus, there was no dearth of finances in the industry. From 1946 to around the early years of the 50’s, some of these ” novo-rich” persons provided finance. Some even tried their hand at directing films or even acting in it. Let us see what other things happened during this period.
By 1946 to 1950 old towers shook hard to crumble. The studio system almost disappeared. Film industry could now boast of people highly educated, talented and hard working. Even artists with International experience and success like Dewan Sharar, Shakuntala Paranjpye, actor Ranjan, Balraj Sahni etc contributed to Indian films. The old horse of Calcutta-New Theatres broke down and actors, directors and Music specialists from Bengal made a Bee-Line to Bombay, thus making it the strongest ever film centre.
1946 was also an year of consolidation, in a sense that due to the iminent Partition of India on the basis of Religion, agreed upon by Gandhi-Nehru combine, made Muslim artistes and filmmakers plan to pack their bags and move over to the new Utopia across the border. Their vacancies were to be filled up by the waiting second line of actors, directors and MDs. The film industry was to have a complete new look within 1-2 years and the beginning was from 1946. Thus the year was very important.
The year 1946 was a year which saw many changes in the film industry. The II world war had just ended. Rationing and control on many items had created Black marketing. This made many people Millionaires. The extra income started getting invested in Film making. The increased cost of Raw Films made filmmaking 7 to 8 times costlier. A film which was made in about 1 Lakh rupees in 1940, needed 8 Lakhs now. Studio system was waning and artiste rates increased in Lakhs instead of thousands.
In 1945, only 74 films were made. This number increased to 153 films in 1946. Further, in 1947, the film industry produced a record number of films – 181, but of course that was due to Partition. The quality of films was sacrificed at the cost of the quantity of films made in 1946. However, some quality films were made in 1946, indicating the changing face of filmmaking.
Film Dharati ke Lal-46 was made by IPTA people and it became the first film to be exhibited in Russia. Neecha Nagar-46 won the Grand Prix award in the French Film Festival. Film Dr. Kotnis ki amar kahani-46 was dubbed in English as ‘ The journey of Dr. Kotnis’. It was shown in the USA and then in the Venice Film Festival. Two musical films- Anmol Ghadi and Shahjahan were made in 1946.
Year 1946 also saw the Debut of several stars and artists ( 31, in different capacities). In fact one can call 1946 as the ” Debut year” of the Hindi film industry. See this….

So, you will find the year 1946 was truly a year of change. The winds of Partition were already blowing and the second line of supplementary artistes was ready to replace the Migrators, after the Partition.
Film Aai Bahar-1946 was also one such film where quality was sacrificed for quantity. Due to the imminent migration of many Muslim artists, it was difficult to get well known or quality actors for this film. Maybe the producer took unknown artists to save money. The cast was full of artists , either not known or new ones. It included actors like irshad, Ajmal, Romesh, Bhag Singh, Anant Bahri, Rufi, Shrimati Atta – along with Om(prakash), Asha (Posley), (N.M.) Charlie etc. The film was produced under the banner of Ganga productions, Bombay. It was directed by Shankar Mehta. Lyricst was D.N.Madhok and the music was by 2 MDs – Pt. Amarnath (Batish) and Anupam Ghatak.
Like many other films of 1946,47 and 48, information about this film’s story and other details are not available. The 11 songs of this film are the most ordinary. 3 songs are already discussed and today’s song is the 4th song. The HFGK is also not able to give its routine information, like full names of actors, the individual credit of songs to each MD or the names of singers of all songs. 2 new actors ( who became famous in their later part of careers) are mentioned only by their first names like Om(which is Omprakash) and Asha (which was Asha Posley). For them this film was from their initial careers. Therefore let us know more about them, and how they became famous later on.
Omprakash was mainly a comedian, but he had been a hero,a villain and a character artiste too. Of course the major part of his career is as a Comedian. He was one of the most respected artistes of his generation, in the industry. For some time he floated a Film production company in collaboration with his close friend C. Ramchandra. When their films flopped, he simply dissolved the company and later produced films on his own and he directed them too. When his film Jahan Ara-64 flopped miserably, giving him a heavy monetary loss, he stopped producing films.
Omprakash was a lover of life, joy, jokes, playing cards and he was the happiest, when among his friends. Not many people know that the famous producer Pachhi ( Around the world etc) was his younger brother. Omprakash’s first film was ‘Guru Ghantal’-37 where he worked uncredited. He next did a small role in Bombay Talkies film ‘Anjaan’-41, but his career started when Pancholi got him a role in film ‘Daasi’-44. He earned Rs 80 for this film.
Omprakash worked in 293 films and directed 4 films namely, Duniya Gol hai-55, Gateway of India-57, Kanhaiya-59 and Chacha Zindabad-59, all produced by him alone. There were some films like Annadata-72, buddha mil gaya-71, Charandas-77 etc made keeping him as a central character. He sang 6 songs in 5 films- Meena Bazar-50, Ladki-53, Bindiya-60,Vardaan-74, and Ghar ki Izzat-94. HFGK mentions his name as a Lyricist for a song in film Dost-54.
OMPRAKASH BAKSHI was born on 19-12-1919 at Lahore. At the age of 12 ,he started learning classical music. In 1937,he joined A.I. Radio on a salary of Rs.25 pm.
He took the pen name of ‘FATEH DIN’. He presented entertaining programmes. He was very popular in Punjab and Lahore, during that period. In private parties he was a centre of attraction. In one such Party, where he was regaling his audience, he was noticed by Dalsukh Pancholi and he offered Omprakash a role in DAASI-1944.Then came Dhamki-45 and Aayee Bahaar-46. In Shehar se door-46, he was a co Hero with Al Nasir and later in Ghungroo-52 he was the Hero opposite Sumitra Devi.
Just when he was settling in films, partition took place and he landed in Bombay. His first film in Bombay was Lakhpati-48 and then there was no looking back. He acted as Villain in Naach, Nirdosh, Baghi Sipahi etc. He was a good actor and played a variety of roles. In many films he was shown as a Pehelwan. In Pehli Jhalak, his bout with Dara Singh became the film’s attraction. Even in Chameli ki Shaadi, he was a pehelwan.
There were many films made with him as a central character like, Annadaata, Dus lakh, Sadhu aur shaitan. Dil Duniya Daulat -72 was a remake of Pugree-48 in which he did the role which was done by comedian Ghori in Pugree.
C.Ramchandra was his best friend. They together produced Duniya gol hai, Jhanjhar and Lakeeren. The trailer of Duniya Gol hai was more interesting than the film. In this trailer, Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Ashok kumar come on the screen one after another and say-I have directed this film, so you must see it. Lastly Omprakash comes on screen and says,” Ye sab pagal hai. Picture to maine direct kee hai”. Anyway all the 3 films flopped despite good music. Later Omprakash alone produced films like Gateway of India, Chacha Zindabad, Sanjog and Jahan Ara. After Jahan Ara’s colossal losses he stopped producing films and converted his office into a Card Game centre for friends.
His last days-
He lived in Union Park, Chembur, a suburb of Mumbai. He died at age 78 in Mumbai, India of a heart attack. The actor who was always so full of life was still full of life till just two days before his death. He knew he was not well. He knew he was suffering from various complications but he never gave up his zest for life till his heart betrayed him. He kept calling friends to play a game of Rummy or just chat. He had an office at the Roop Tara Studios which was only used for “Rummy sessions” and “chat sessions”. Then, some years ago, he shifted his office to the suburbs to make it more convenient for his friends. He attended this office regularly till his health started failing him. He was confined to his bungalow (next to Ashok Kumar’s bungalow). He suffered his first heart attack in his own bedroom. He was rushed to the Lilavati Hospital where he suffered a second heart attack and went into a coma from which he never came out. He was declared dead at 1.30 pm on February 21, 1998. The news spread fast and the industry was shocked and stunned because he was the kind of man who could not be easily associated with something so sombre and solemn like death.
Film Duniya Gol Hai-55 had a star cast of Karan Dewan, Anita Guha, Kuldeep Kaur, Sunder, Omprakash etc. Since this was his First film as a Director, as many as 13 actors worked in the film as “Guest Artistes” ! He was so popular that he had to say No to some more actors ready and eager to work as Guest Atrtistes in this film. Till this film, it was a sort of record.
There were many actresses with the name Asha. Like the most famous Asha Parekh, not so famous Asha Mathur or Asha Sachdev and in the early era, there was Ashalata ( wife of Anil Biswas), and Marathi actress Ashalata Wabgaonkar too did few Hindi films.
Have you heard of Asha Bhosle ? What a stupid question ! Of course you have heard her name, but she is a singer. OK, then, have you heard the name of ASHA POSLEY ?
No. I am not joking. There WAS an actress by this name ASHA POSLEY, in the 40s in India and in the period 50s to 80s in Pakistan. Her name has become immortal in the history of Pakistani Films, as the First Heroine of Pakistani film ” Teri Yaad”-1948.
She was born as Sabira Begum on 31-5-1927 at Patiala, Punjab. Her father MD Inayat Ali Nath was working with HMV at Delhi. Sabira was formally trained by experts in music and singing. When her father shifted to Lahore, she was offered a contract by Roop K Shorey, who made films in Lahore those days. It was the popular Composer Ghulam Haider who gave her the screen name of ASHA POSLEY.
Her first film was Punjabi film Govandi-1942 which launched the handsome Hero Shyam. Her role in the film was a minor one. She started as a supporting actress. She got a major role in the film Champa-1945 and her first film as a Heroine was Kamli-46-a Punjabi film. Then came Badnami-46,in which Geeta Bali had a small role. Her other Indian films were Paraye bas mein-46. In the film Arsi-47,her hero was Pran and Meena Shorey had also acted in it. Kamla-46, Aai Bahar-46, Pagdandi-47, Ek Roze-47,Barsaat ki ek raat-48, Papeeha Re-48 and Roop Rekha-48. She worked in 11 Hindi films and sang 1 song in the film Pagdandi-47.
After Partition, she opted for Pakistan and migrated along with her father. The Lahore film industry was in a disarray, because most producers, financiers and leading artistes had shifted to India. However a Hindu producer named Dewan Sardari Lall had stayed back in Lahore and he started a new film in Independent Pakistan ” Teri Yaad “. There were 2 other films under production at the same time. Actually, the first film of Pakistan was Director Luqmaan’s ” Shahida “,which had started shooting immediately after Partition, but it got delayed and finally was released only in 1949. The second film was ” Jihad ” by Zahoor Raja, which too got stuck and was released only in 1950.
Thus the actual Third film, ” Teri Yaad ” starring Nasir Khan ( brother of actor Dilip Kumar, who migrated to Pakistan with high hopes but had to return to India as there was no work and also due to ” other ” reasons) and Asha Posley in the lead was completed by Dewan Pictures and became the FIRST released Pakistani Film in 1948 itself. It was released in Prabhat Theatre in Lahore, on the day of EID-7-8-1948. The film was directed by Dawood Chaand and music was by Inayat Ali Nath (father of the Heroine Asha Posley). She sang 4 songs in it. The film was a resounding FLOP.
Asha Posley did Heroine’s role only in 4 Pakistani films and then she turned to supporting, comedy and vamp roles. She acted in 129 films, 76 Urdu and 53 Punjabi films. Her last film was Insaaf-1986. She acted in films, on stage, on TV and also sang on Radio. Famous Pak singer Kausar Parveen, actress Rani Kiran and TV actress Najma Begum were her sisters.
Like many migrated artistes, even Asha Posley spent her last days in penury and anonymity. She died on 26-3-1998 at Lahore.
Here is the 4th song from this film, sung by Munawwar Sultana-the Pakistani Singer. There was another Same name actress in India causing Confusion. Luckily the Indian Munawwar Sultana never sang a song and the Pakistani Munawwar Sultana never acted in any film.
Song- Teree yaad kyun aaye o Raja jee (Aai Bahaar)(1946) Singer- Munawwar Sultana, Lyricist- D.N.Madhok, MD- Pt. Amarnath and Anupam Ghatak
