Today’s song is from the film Sangam-1954.
There were 3 films with this title, made in 1941, 1954 and 1964. The 1964 film is known to all as it had all top stars of that time, in lead roles and a Raj Kapoor touch. The 1941 film was a bilingual film , in Marathi and Hindi, made by Navyug Pictures, owned by the famous Marathi writer Acharya Atre and Master Vinayak.
The 50’s decade was called the Golden Era of HFM, not for nothing. Year after year, the films provided excellent songs, different film Genres, convincing stories, superb acting and Full Paisa Vasool Entertainment. In such a scenario an average music, beaten track stories, mediocre acting, poor direction and lustreless short lived songs had no chance of winning.
Just before this decade, the Genre of crime story films had already started being popular with films like Apradhi-1949 and Sangram-1950. In 1951 Baazi, in 1952 Jaal etc. continued this trend. The year of 1954 also began with Guru Dutt’s Aar Paar, with hit songs by O.P.Nayyar. Next was Taxi Driver from Navketan. It had foot tapping melodious songs.

Filmistan brought Nastik, which showed the change of a Nastik to being Aastik, Its songs were very good. Filmistan’s Naagin gave Hemant Kumar the necessary boost with hit songs. Minerva’s Mirza Ghalib showered good songs. It also won the President’s Gold Medal – the First for a Hindi film.
After Do Bigha Zameen-1953, Bimal Roy brought Naukari on the issue of unemployment. His other film was Biraj Bahu, an effective Tragedy film, based on Sharat Babu’s novel. Kamini Kaushal won her First and the only Filmfare award for Best Acting.
Film Amar from Mehboob Khan survived with good songs in spite of a weak story. Some films were made for children. Filmistan’s Jagriti, Munna– India’s second songless film from K.A.Abbas, Bimal Roy’s Baap Beti and H.S. Rawail’s Mastana were these films. All had good music too.
Satyen Bose made Parichay, Debki Bose’s last film in Bombay-Kavi Mohan Sehgal’s Aulad were followed by Shantaram’s Subah ka Tara– last film before Shantaram and Jayashree were divorced. To save the sinking studio Bombay Talkies from bankruptcy, its employees made the film Baadbaan, in which all artistes, technicians and others worked free of charge. However Bombay Talkies had to be sold to Tolaram Jalani. Today, its site in Malad is full of small Plastic factories.
Kala Maharshi Baburao Painter died in 1954. Dilip Kumar became a victim of depression due to his continuous Tragedy films in which he always died in the end and had to seek psychiatric treatment. The year 1954 also saw some films being made in colour partially heralding fully coloured films in a few years later.
It is generally believed that Talent will shine in whatever circumstances it faces. But in practical life, it is not true. There are cases in History, where Talent alone has not helped. The Luck factor plays a vital role in one’s life. But then, what is Luck ? Call it opportunities, recognition, fame, money…. call it what you may like to, but Luck is a factor.
Otherwise, so many talented actors, singers, composers, directors or even Producers would not rot in the film industry. The case of the film ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’-75 can be cited as a classic example. If it was not for Luck, how come a low budget film, made by a repeatedly failed producer Satram Rohra, became one of the top blockbusters of all times ? Surprisingly, after this movie, the next ventures of Satram Rohra were again failures, proving that this one off success was a flash in the pan. Though he was benefited by “Jai Santoshi Maa”-75, neither the Music Director C. Arjun nor the film’s director Vijay Sharma got any benefit from the film. Probably they were not as lucky.
I do not want to dwell on examples and a lengthy discussion in favour of Luck, but let us not forget that many talented artistes, who showed great promise with their initial achievements, failed inexplicably in their later careers. At least two examples can be quoted, that of composer Ram Ganguly and singer Mubarak Begum (RIP).
Today’s song is from the film “Sangam”-54. It is sung by Shamshad Begum and chorus, under the baton of composer Ram Ganguly. Unfortunately, Ram Ganguly has no identity beyond his most famous film ” Aag”-48 ( which was his 3rd film), making many people think that this was the only film that he did. Sometimes he is mistaken even for composer Ramlal (Choudhari).
Born on 5-8-1928, Ram Ganguly soon achieved expertise in playing Violin, at the age of just 10 years. He was highly appreciated when he played Violin at the All India Congress Party Session at Calcutta. Listening to his Violin, composer R C Boral immediately offered him a job in New Theatres. There he met Prithviraj Kapoor and they became friends. Following Kapoor, Ram too proceeded to Bombay. He joined Prithwi Theatres as a Music Director for their stage dramas. His music in the famous drama “Deewar” became popular. Raj Kapoor had sung a song in that drama, for which HMV took out a record also- “Hum babu naye nirale hain”.
Ram’s first film as a Music Director was Jayant Desai’s “Maharana Pratap”-46. He did one more film for Desai, “Mahatulsi Vrinda”-47. When Raj Kapoor made his first film, “Aag”-48, selection of Ram Ganguly as its Music Director was natural, because Raj knew him very well from the Prithwi Days. Ram Ganguli took Tabla player Shanker and Harmonium player Jaikishen as his assistants, having known them earlier. Little did he know at that time that this pair would edge him out from Raj camp and that they would firmly establish themselves there. Ram Ganguli gave excellent songs for the film Aag-48, which were sung by Shamshad, Mukesh and Sailesh Mukherjee.
In Spite of his good performance, he was thrown out by Raj Kapoor for his next venture Barsaat, for 2 reasons. One – Ganguli being an old guard did not fit into the future plans of Raj Kapoor, who wanted to innovate and bring in New ideas and Two, he was told that Ganguly was trying to use Barsaat tunes for outside producers. While the first reason seems to be plausible, the second reason seems to be an excuse. God only knows the truth, but Shankar Jaikishan were capable of anything- if one knows what they did in the coming years to win Awards and contracts.
In all, Ram Ganguly gave music in just 13 films and 1 unreleased film. His films were Maharana Pratap-46, Mahatulsi Vrinda-47, Aag-48, Jalsa-48, Banvasi-48, Anmol moti-49, Ram Darshan-50,Deepak-51, Sangam-54, Gawaiya-54,(this film also saw the end of Surendra’s singing career), When Prithwiraj Kapoor decided to make his famous drama “Paisa” into a film, he called only Ram Ganguly. He had been the music director for the original drama as well. He gave good songs but they failed to become popular. Then came Ten o’clock-58 and then his last film was Saaya-61. In between, a film Postmaster-55 remained unreleased.
Slowly Ram Ganguly was forgotten. He stopped getting films. No one came to him. Finally, frustrated, he left for Calcutta and died there sometime in 1983.
Because of his songs in the film Aag-48, singer Sailesh Mukherjee came into limelight. He had only 2 songs in it but both became hits. His duet with Shamshad, “dekh chand ki ore” sounds fresh and sweet even today. There were seven songs in Film Sangam-54. Three songs from this movie have been discussed here. A few more songs from this movie are available on YouTube and they are all good songs like the one we are going to enjoy today. Today’s song is taken from Sadanand Kamath ji’s channel on YouTube, with thanks.
The film’s cast included Kamini Kaushal (real name Uma Kashyap), Shekhar (real name Indriya Daman),Shashikala, K.N.Singh, Murad, Chaman Puri, Jeevan and others. There were 3 Lyricists, namely S.H.Bihari, Kaif Irfani and Hasrat Jaipuri. one of the less Known actors in the cast is Chaman Puri.
