“Lailo Shabab Aai Jhoom Jhoom Ke” by Lata Mangeshkar and chorus is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and composed by R D Burman. It’s from “Do Phool” (1973).

Do Phool was produced by Mehmood under his banner “Balaji / Raam Raj Kalamandir” and directed by S Ramanathan. The movie was based on the Tamil film Anubavi Raja Anubavi by K. Balachander (original story). The Screenplay & Hindi adaptation was by Abrar Alvi and Rama Arangannal. Music is composed by R. D. Burman while the lyrics were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri.

The movie starred Ashok Kumar (Diwan Bahadur Atal Rai), Vinod Mehra (Charitra “Chuttan”), Mehmood (Pavitra “Puttan” — comic/double-role elements), Aruna Irani (Shaila), Anjana Mumtaz, Rama Prabha, Jeevan, Chandrashekhar, Lalita Pawar, Sunder, Mukri.

Story of the movie is:

Diwan Bahadur Atal Rai is a rich man living in a big house with his wife and two irresponsible sons: Pavitra (the adopted son often called “Puttan”) and Charitra (the biological son, “Chuttan”). Both are spoilt, avoid work and humiliate their father when he tries to make responsible choices for them.

After the father decides to get Charitra married to Shaila, the sons rebel and play pranks. One prank escalates when Charitra jokingly claims he has murdered Pavitra; the joke snowballs into a real panic when a dead body is later found and identified (in error) as Pavitra. What began as mischief turns into a full criminal-suspicion.

Pavitra later turns up alive, but in circumstances that suggest he is not who he claims to be—claiming another name (Mani) and a different background (from Cochin with a widowed mother). The discovery raises questions: if Pavitra is alive, whose is the corpse? Are there doppelgängers or deliberate impersonations at work? These twists drive the comic-mystery beats.

Through a sequence of investigative and farcical set-pieces (aided by police, relatives and comic characters), the misunderstandings are cleared up, the identity/identity-swaps are explained, and the family reconciles—justice and order restored in a light-hearted conclusion.

Now coming to today’s song, it is evident that the track blends Arabic-Middle Eastern melodic touches with 1970s Hindi-film cabaret rhythms.

Pancham uses bongo/conga patterns, mandolin-like accents, and his signature brass punches.

Strong rhythm section, fast tempo, and playful musical pauses. Lata Mangeshkar’s vocals bring flirtatious sharpness and delivers robust, bright phrases full of swagger.

The song is picturised on Laxmi Chaya, one of the era’s best dance performers, who adds spark and expressive choreography. We also see Mehmood dressed up as an Arab, dancing and trying to pick the pocket of Yousuf Khan (popularly known as Zebisco).

This is the third song of this album to be posted here.
