Now let us turn to the nightingale of India, Lata Mangeshkar, as she sings a song “Tum Ko Agar Maine” penned by Hasrat Jaipuri and composed by Naushad Ali. The song is from the 1974 film My Friend.
“My Friend”(1974) was produced by Poonam Bhai Shah and Naushad and directed by M Rehman for Poonam Pictures Private Limited, Bombay. The movie had Rajeev(New find), Prema Narayan, Utpal Dutt, Purnima, Umraani(new find), Jagdeep, Asit Sen, Polson, Tuntun, Badri Prasad, Mona Sayeed, Hakeem, Samson, Rirkoo, Ratna, Moolchand etc in it.
I had seen the movie when it was released but don’t remember much of it. I distinctly remember the story because another movie with similar plot was released a year later which was “Kaagaz Ki Naav” (1975).
The story is as under:
It centres on a modern young man and his relationship with his father, who outwardly appears “broad-minded” or progressive.
This youth falls in love with a cabaret dancer (a bar dancer), and proposes marriage, or at least seriously pursues her. However, his father strongly disapproves of this relationship. The father’s “modern” liberalism is somewhat of a façade or cover: in reality, he has secrets — possibly extra-marital activities — and his progressive image hides darker sides.
As the conflict unfolds, the son learns the truth about his father’s hypocrisy, and he works to resolve the crisis.
Ultimately, “love triumphs” — indicating a resolution in favor of the young man and the dancer.
I couldn’t find the video clip of this song.

tumko agar maine pyaar kiya toh
tum kya doge mujhe
saara jahaan

raaton ka savera hai
rangeen andhera hai
mauka bhee sunehra hai
raaton ka savera hai
rangeen andhera hai
mauka bhee sunehra hai
aao zara
aur idhar
thhaame huye dil jigar
teer jigar ke paar kiya to
tum kya doge mujhe
ek hazaar
tumko agar maine pyaar kiya to
tum kya doge mujhe
dedh hazaar
bas
baazaar hai ulfat ka
jalwa hai qayaamat ka
sauda hai muhobbat ka
baazaar hai ulfat ka
jalwa hai qayaamat ka
sauda hai muhobbat ka
dil se koi kaam lo
haathh mera thhaam lo
ishq bharey baazaar kiyaa to
tum kya doge mujhe

lo apna kiya tumko
maana hai piya tumko
dil maine diya tumko

paanch hazaar ek
paanch hazaar do
