‘Faislaa’ (1965) was produced and directed by Jugal Kishore. The cast included Shaikh Mukthar, L Vijayalaxmi, Jugal Kishore, Jagdeep, Sulochana Chatterjee, Niranjan Sharma, Jagdev, Jeevan, Sabina, Nazeer Kashmiri, Sheela, Helen etc. The film was an action-crime drama.

The film’s lead actress, L. Vijayalaxmi is from South and is different from Hindi film actress, Vijaylaxmi (real name: Kamala Verma) who has worked in ‘Mahal’ (1949), ‘Baawre Nain’ (1950). ‘Aah’ (1953), ‘Coffee House (1957), ‘Gharaana’ (1961), ‘Aap Ki Parchhaaiyaan’ 1964) etc. She mostly got the role of ‘other woman’ in the films.

Lakshmanan Vijayalaxmi (also written as Vijayalakshmi) was born on May 5, 1943, in Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu. Her mother, Kanthimathi was a trained vocalist and the Veena player while her father, Lakshmanan worked in Defence Account Department (Probably called the Office of the Controller of Defence Account). When she was 5-year of age, the family shifted to Pune where her father was transferred.

Vijayalaxmi developed interest in dance after watching the live dance shows of Vyjayantimala, Lalitha and Padmini at the South Indian Association in Pune. Thereafter, she used to dance imitating the dance steps she has seen to the classical tune her mother would sing and play on Veena. Noticing her talent, her father put Vijayalaxmi under the guidance of Guru Sukumara Pillai in Pune. At the age of nine, she gave the first public performance of her dance at a temple in Andhra Pradesh.

For the advance dance lessons, Vijayalaxmi with her family moved to Chennai and stayed at Mylapore when she was put under the tutelage of Guru Vazhuvoor Ramaiah Pillai for Bharatanatyam. After fully trained, Vijayalaxmi gave her first Bharatanatyam performance in 1955. With the qualification of a trained dancer and a beautiful face, Vijayalaxmi got offers to act in Telugu films. Her first film in adult role was a Telugu film, ‘Sipayi Kuthuru’ (1959). She has worked in many Telugu and Tamil films along with few Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi films.

Vijayalaxmi debuted in Hindi films with ‘Shabnam’ (1964) in which she was paired with Mehmood. In ‘Baadal’ (1966), she was paired with Sanjeev Kumar. ‘Amar Jyoti’ (1965), ‘Husn Aur Ishq’ (1966), ‘Alibaba And 40 Thieves’ (1966) and ‘Faislaa’ (1965) was her other Hindi films.

During her a short filmy career of about 10 years, Vijayalaxmi has worked in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi films aggregating nearly 100 films. She has worked with top stars of South’s films like N T Ramarao, Nageswara Rao, MG Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan, Prem Nazir etc.

Sometime in 1967, Vijayalaxmi got married to her brother’s friend, Surjit Kumar De Dutta, an agricultural scientist who was working in Manila (Philippines). Post retirement from the films, Vijayalaxmi graduated with B.Com from Madras University and moved to Manila to be with her husband in 1969. They migrated to Virginia (USA) in 1991 where Vijayalaxmi completed Chartered Public Accountant (CPA) which is equivalent to Chartered Accountant in India. She worked as a Budget Officer in Virginia Polytechnic University. During this period, she also got trained in Zumba dance. Currently, Vijayalaxmi stays with her only son in California where he works in a software company. [Note: The life profile of L Vijayalaxmi is mainly based on her interview which appeared on ETV (Telugu) sometime in 2022].

The story of ‘Faislaa’ (1965) is as under:

Seth Natwarlal (Niranjan Sharma) expels his wife, Tara (Sulochana Chatterjee) for insulting his friend, Bihari (Jeevan) during their drinking session in the house. Tara leaves the house with an infant son and gets refuse in a smaritan’s house.

After about 25 years, Tara’s son has gaduated as Moti (Jugal Kishore), He is unemployed and spends time with his close friend, Jagga (Jagdeep). She has been sustaining with her in-house tailoring works. Moti and Jagga become the friend with a notorious goon, Fazloo (Shaikh Mukhtar) accidentally, when he is rescued from the mob in a bar when he refuses to pay the bill.

One day, Moti meets Kamini (L Vijayalaxmi) who has come to his house for stitching some dresses for her. Moti tries to converse with Kamini but she is not interested as he has earlier Jagga has accidentally dashed his car to Kamini’s cycle when Kamini and her friends were returning from picnic and Moti was arguing with her.

Moti and Jagga get jobs as mechanic in a garage. However, after few days , Moti is fed-up with working for somebody. He leaves the job with an intention of setting up his own garage. His mother suggests him to meet Seth Natwarlal (in reality, his father) who will give him the financial help to set up a garage once he introduces himself. However, he could not meet Seth Natwarlal as Bihari was present with another man posing as his lost son, Moti with the intention of grabbing his property. The real Moti returns without achieving his objective.

On the same night, Fazloo is on his mission on a contract killing on behalf of Bihari. He kills that person. The first person to help the victim is Moti who was returning without meeting Seth Natwarlal. Police team reaches the spot and take Moti into their custody on charge of murder. He escapes from the police and somehow reaches home frightened. He has not come out of his house for many days and he has lost his job. In the meanwhile, the police investigation comes out with the fingerprints of two persons on the weapon. Obviously, second person is Fazloo.

Ever since Fazloo has come to know from the newspaper reports that he has killed an innocent man leaving his wife, an unmarried sister, Kamini and a child, he is repentant with a disturbed mind. His conscious forces him to visit the affected family. He meets the child whose father he has killed. Being blind, she mistakes him to be his father as she has been waiting for her father to return home who has assured her to bring money to get her operated for restoring her eyes. Fazloo’s heart melts and decides to help the family. His frequent meetings with the child ignites the human side of his character. However, he ensures that he meets the child when she is alone outside her house.

In the course of time, Fazloo comes to know that police is after Moti for the murder of Kamini’s brother. Moti is unaware that the real culprit for the murder is Fazloo. In the meantime, the love is blossoming between Kamini and Moti as he and Fazloo have saved her from some goons. Bihari in connivance with an imposter, Moti is bent upon grabbing the property of the real Moti’s father. With the damsel’s sword hanging on Moti by way of his imminent arrest, his relationship with Kamini can get jeopardised. The only person, who is in a position to clear the misgiving about Moti is Fazloo. And he has to take a quick decision before the situation goes out of control.

As anticipated, Moti is finally arrested on the charge of killing Kamini’s brother. Bihari tries to kill Fazloo to keep his mouth shut but fortunately is able to escape with injuries. He is hospitalised. Kamini makes a visit to hospital during which Fazloo comes to know about Moti’s arrest. Fazloo escapes from the hospital to confess to the police that he has committed the murder. But on the way, he is kidnapped by Bihari’s henchmen.

In the court, Moti is presented as an accused. After the final hearings, the judge is about to pronounce his judgment when Fazloo brings a badly injured Bihari in the court who confesses of having given the contract to Fazloo to kill Kamini’s brother. Fazloo accepts the killing of Kamini’s brother. The judge sentences him death by hanging. The film ends with Fazloo’s funeral.

The film had seven songs written by Asad Bhopali (6) and Prem Warbartani (1) which were set to music by Usha Khanna. Six songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 7th and the last song, ‘mera chhaila babu aaya’ rendered by Suman Kalyanpur and Usha Khanna who sing for L Vijayalaxmi and Sheela Ramchandra, respectively. As normally happens in this genre of Hindi films, the songs are mostly fitted without much context to the story. So, in respect of this song also, Moti (Jugal Kishore) attends the dance performance of Kamini (L Vijayalaxmi) along with Jagga (Jagdeep) just to flirt with her after her dance performance is over.

Video Clip of the song has one extra antara. However, a few verses from other antaras are missing which I have supplemented from the audio clip of the song while jotting down the lyrics.

With this song, all the seven songs from the film have been covered on the Blog.

goonje paayal ke naghme fizaa mein
bikhree saanson kee khushboo hawaa mein
ho o saamne aaya jab aane waala
aa aa maine sharmaa ke aanchal sambhaala
huyee nazron kee baat
jhhuk gaye mil ke nain
ab kahaan dil ko chain

ik raushnee dil tak aayee
koi aur samajh na paaya
mera chhaila baabu aaya
albela baabu aaya

ye naheen bas kee baat
unse nazren churaaun
laakh mukhda chupaaun
mera chhaila baabu aaya
albela baabu aaya
bijlee see kaheen lahraayee
ik raushnee dil tak aayee
koi aur samajh na paaya
mera chhaila baabu aaya
albela baabu aaya

raaten rangeen din hon suhaane
jaane kab aayenge wo zamaane
ho o phool se raaston mein khilenge
aa aa jab mohabbat se do dil milenge
hogee kitnee haseen aane waalee bahaar
muskuraayega pyaar
mera chhaila baabu aaya
albela baabu aaya
chhaila baabu aaya
albela baabu aaya

bijlee see kaheen lahraayee
ik raushnee dil tak aayee
bijlee see kaheen lahraayee
ik raushnee dil tak aayee
koi aur samajh na paaya
mera chhaila baabu aaya
albela baabu aaya
