‘Begunaah’ (1970) was produced by Amritlal Jaiswal and was directed by Shiv Kumar. The cast included Shaikh Mukhtar, Devdutt, Shahida, N A Ansari, Helen, Mohan Sheri, Murad, Asha Nadkarni, Asit Sen, Sushma, Shanaaz, Meena T, V Gopal, Viju Khote, Bhagwan, Uma Dutt, Tuntun, Rajan Kapoor etc.
The name of the director of the film, Shiv Kumar has created the ‘same name confusion’ for me. I was aware of Shiv Kumar who became a known actor after the film with his lead role, ‘Mahua’ (1969) attained a super hit status. After some browsing on the internet, I came across a death news with a headline, ‘Film maker, Shiv Kumar Khurana passes away’ in which his filmography was listed including the film under discussion. Fortunately, both ‘Shiv Kumar’ have different surnames – Khurana and Pathak which they did not use in the credit titles of the films thus creating the confusion.
Both Shiv Kumar Khurana and Shiv Kumar Pathak were contemporary in the Hindi films. Shiv Kumar Khurana’s first film as a director was ‘Tarzan and the Circus’ (1965), a jungle thriller film. He directed 18 films and produced 3 films during 1965-99. He never acted in any films. He passed away on October 25, 2022, at the age of 83 due to old age-related illness. Shiv Kumar Pathak debuted in ‘Poonam Ki Raat’ (1965) as a side actor. After acting in some films, both as a lead as well as side actor, he turned producer with ‘Ahinsa’ (1979). Thereafter, he produced, directed and acted in the first Brajbhasha film, ‘Brajbhumi’ (1982) followed by three more Brajbhasha films. Co-incidentally, both Shiv Kumar were born in 1942 and ended their filmy career in around 2000. Shiv Kumar Phatak had to leave Mumbai due to medical reason and he shifted to Faridabad with his family. He passed away on September 2, 2018 in Aligarh after a prolonged illness due to acute arthritis.
The story of the film is as under:
Shankar (Shaikh Mukhtar), a criminal has been working for a gang led by a Boss (Murad) and he was reporting to Gopal (N A Ansari), the Boss’s right hand man. Because of his criminal activities, Shankar had spent 7 years in prison. After the release from the prison, he is now reformed. He stays with his wife Shobha (Asha Nadkarni) and a small child. He has moulded himself in a honest life and he works in a garage.
One Seth Mohanlal has been murdered and police has found a purse near the dead body with a photograph of Shankar. Police calls Shankar for questioning during which he tells the police inspector, Mahendra Nath (Mohan Sheri) that a couple of days back, he has lost his purse in pick-pocket. The police does not believe in statement and calls the maid servant of Mohanlal who has seen the killer. for an identification parade. He is not able to recognise anyone. Shankar is let free, but he loses his job in the garage as the owner does not want him anymore who is suspected of the murder.
Gopal visits Shankar’s house and offers him to take back in his gang with a hefty amount. Gopal knows that his planned bank heist can be successfully handled by Shankar only. But Shankar is not tempted. He rejects his offers by telling him that he wants to live a honest life. Gopal leaves telling him that his offer still stands and whenever he has a change of mind, he can revert to him. In the meanwhile, Shankar is not able to get jobs due to his past criminal record. Gopal’s men are still after him to join them but he trashes them. In between, his younger brother, Vijay (Dev Dutt) who is studying in the college, visits the house and Shankar behaves with him as if he is employed.
Vijay is in love with his college mate, Asha (Shahida) who is the daughter of Inspector, Mahendra Nath. Asha reveals to her father that she has been love with Vijay, who is honest and upright, and both would like to marry each other. Her father agrees provided he is from a respectable family. As was expected, when Mahendra Nath comes to know that Vijay is the younger brother of ex-criminal, Shankar, he refuses to give consent to Asha’s marriage with Vijay despite assurance given by Shankar that he would keep distance from his brother by leaving the city to settle far away from him.
In the meanwhile, Daisy (Helen) joins Gopal’s night club as a dancer and earns his confidence. He includes her in his core group of gang with share to her of earnings from criminal activities. On the other hand, Shankar is fed up with facing constant obstructions to live a honest life due to his past criminal records. He decides to go back to his criminal life despite objections from his wife and the brother. He goes to meet Gopal in his night club who welcomes him wholeheartedly and assigns the job of a bank heist. Daisy, on the other, hand proposes to Shankar that both could join hand independent of Gopal to grab the entire loot from the bank heist and Shankar is not averse to it.
On the new year eve, the bank heist is planned in the midnight when people around the bank would be in celebration mood with noise from bursting of crackers. The plan goes as per the schedule. The box containing the money is handed over to Gopal and Shankar gets his reward of the promised cash. Later, Gopal tells Daisy that Shankar has got only counterfeit cash. Daisy also wants her share but Gopal says that the box does not contain cash but a secret map which will be handed over to an enemy country on which he would earn a lot of money after which he would flee from the country. He further tells her that he is also aware that she is an agent working for someone. She retorts that she is not the agent but the daughter of Seth Mohanlal whom he has murdered. She has joined him to take a revenge on him.
Having known for years as to how Gopal’s mind work, Shankar has not left after getting his reward but stood hiding close by when he hears the conversation between Gopal and Daisy. He pounces upon Gopal and snatches the bag containing the secret map. This is followed by the usual formula ‘B’ grade films’ ending – a lot of actions with gun fights between the gang of Gopal and Shankar, kidnapping of Shankar’s son to get the bag back from him and lastly the plan to kill Shankar by Gopal at the time of exchange of his son for the bag. As usual, Inspector Mahendra Nath reaches in time with a strong police force to defeat the Gopal’s plan. Shankar unites with his family and so also Vijay with Asha, this time with the blessing of Police Inspectot, Mahendra Nath.
The film had six songs written by Asad Bhopali (4) and Manohar Khanna (2) which were set to music by Usha Khanna. Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 3rd song, ‘andhera ujaale se takra raha hai’ written by Asad Bhopali which is rendered by Asha Bhosle. The song is picturised on Helen as a dance song. Shaikh Mukhtar, N A Ansari and Uma Dutt among others are seen in the picturisation of the song.
The context of the song is that after facing many obstacles to live a honest life, ex-criminal Shankar (Shaikh Mukhtar) goes back to meet his ex-gang partner, Gopal (N A Ansari) in his night club where a dance by Daisy (Helen) is in progress. After the dance, Shankar meets Gopal and rejoins his gang only for a bank heist.
Incidentally, there is a continuity mistake overlooked by continuity supervisor of the scenes. Shaikh’s Mukhtar is in two different striped shirts in the same scene during the picturisation of the last antara of the song.
