This movie’s story happens on a cruise ship. Cruise ship travel is still out of affordability area for the common people in India. I do not know anyone who does this type of travel or holidays. The way of life involving Yachts, Marinas and Cruise ships is very foreign to India. I saw one cruise ship in Liverpool. I saw some people who were from that ship roaming around the harbour area, with the Beatles museum, and the eateries, a very ordinary boat ride around the inner harbour/backwaters. They stood out as they were not casual tourists. At least I thought so, as I pride myself on my powers of observation and differentiation.

We in India, with our longish coastline and the vast country full of rivers, could have been more water centric, for transportation and for daily livelihood needs. It is, in some areas of inner states with big rivers. Bengal and Kerela are the coastal states with maximum water transport options. For a city like Mumbai, water transport makes more sense than an air-taxi. It certainly should be more affordable, as there is no road maintenance involved. Here plans are made, scrapped, replanned, a service provider is given license to operate things like hovercraft, or small boats. Then it all goes kaput, for not being commercially viable. I read about plans for a Marina to be commissioned, very close of my home, many years ago. The land and area were cleared of mangroves and illegal construction etc. In the end a service provider is operating some boat service to nearby island and other outcropping locations and the main city Gateway of India. These services are stopped during monsoon. It is not a very reliable travel option for daily travel.

Life of movie characters is a fantasy world. In this fantasy, school teachers get free cruise ship holidays. They venture also on that adventure all alone. Here the lucky school teacher is Manisha Koirala. On the ship one Casanova is also passing the time, i.e. Aamir khan.

The lifestyle of this Casanova/playboy character is also beyond the realms of our imagination. He has a grandmother living on a remote island, where the cruise ship stops on way to Mumbai. Grandmother(whitehaired) played by Sharmila Tagore, her ghost is seen in the song, blessing Manisha Koirala.

After all the song and dance is over on the cruise ship travel, our hero and heroine are in love, and as they reach Gateway of India, the heroine is getting cold feet, due to the huge difference in the class with the hero, and because she has a suiter back home, namely Anil Kapoor, who she is almost committed to. The hero promises to mend his ways and be worthy of her. Both have their tasks cut out.

They decide to meet each other a year later, same date, same time and same place. I know this type of thing also happened in one more hindi film i.e. ‘Sachchayi”(1969). Here two college friends decide to meet after 10 years for they have differing views of honesty and goodness. Same time same place. And 10 years has changed both dramatically and they are opposite of what they were as college students.

Coming back to the movie “Mann”, a year later our hero is waiting as promised, and the heroine never arrives. She has a fatal accident, loses her legs, decides not to inform him. He is devastated, and a chance meeting at the stage show is where the song is happening. The drama unfolding on stage feels like their own life emotions to both sitting in the audience. This is a very common occurrence in hindi films, aka ‘Aa mere hamjoli aa” in “Jeene ki raah”.

Trivia about the song:

This was an uncredited adaptation of the hit Tamil film song “Etho Oru Paattu” (“Unnidathil Ennai Koduthen”, 1998) composed by S.A. Rajkumar and sung by Hariharan.

Trivia about the film:

This film was adapted from the Hollywood film “An Affair to Remember” (1957) starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. “An Affair to Remember” itself was a remake of director Leo McCarey’s own, older American film “Love Affair” (1939). The Hindi films “Bheegi Raat” (1965) and “Ek Baar Kaho” (1980), and the Telugu film “Ravoyi Chandamama” (1999) also had similar plots.

I am remembering “Aarzoo”(1965) with a similar twist in the story, where Rajendra Kumar fails to turn-up when he said he would due to his road accident.

The song “Chaaha hai tumko” is written by Sameer and composed by Sanjeev -Darshan, who are related to Shravan of Nadeem-Shravan duo(I think, but not sure). Their music is very similar to Nadeem-Shravan’s scores. They had one more memorable music score which I remember in “Dhadkan”. Very melodious and hummable songs in both the films. The singers are Udit Narayan-Anuradha Paudwal.

Mann ( 1999) is making its debut in the blog with this song.

Lyrics:

Chaaha hai tujhko
chaahoongaa hardam
mar ke bhee dil se
yeh pyar na hogaa kam

teree yaad jo aatee hai
mere aansoo behte hain
apna to milan hogaa
pal pal yeh kehte hain aen
kya yeh zindagaanee hai
bas teree kahaanee hai
bas teree kahaanee hai ea
yeh jo zindagaanee hai
chaaha hai tujhko
chaahoongaa hardam
mar ke bhee dil se
yeh pyar na hogaa kam

teree who baaten
woh chaahat ki rasmein
jhoothhe thhe waade
kya jhootthi thhi qasmen
jaan-e-tamanna kya yeh sach hai
bas itna keh de ea ea
toot jaaye na lamhaa
aitbaar kaa
de koyi silaa mere
intezaar kaa
chaaha hai tujhko
chaahoongee hardam
mar ke bhi dil se
yeh pyar na hogaa kam

teree hoon teree
jo chaahe qasam le le
mujhko hamraahee
tu apne gham de de
saaree umar hai
mujhko dard judaayee ka sehnaa aaa
raaste mein khoyee hai
manzilen meree ee
mere saathh jaayengee
mushkilen meree ee

chaaha hai tujhko
chaahoongaa hardam
mar ke bhee dil se
yeh pyar na hogaa kam
tu saamne hai mere
phir kyun yeh dooree hai
tujhe kaise bataaun main
haay kya majbooree hai ae ae
yeh bhee koyi jeena hai ae ae
sirf aansoo peena hai
sirf aansoo peena hai
yeh bhee koyi jeena hai ae
