To change our mood and taste from Asha Ji’s rare songs, we move towards my most favourite amongst all the playback singers in all languages, the Legend worthy of being awarded the Bharat Ratna, Mohd. Rafi Saab.
We will keep the discussion about the Bharat Ratna for another day.
‘Rootha Na Karo’ is a film from the banner of Nirmal Pictures, Bombay, directed by Sundar Dar. All the seven songs in this film are written by Hasrat Jaipuri. The star cast of the film is led by Shashi Kapoor and Nanda, along with Naaz, Rajendra Nath, Aruna Irani, Sulochana, Lakshmichaya, Jaishri Talpade, Saroj, Shobha, Tuntun, Mirza Musharraf, and Reeta amongst others.
The story/synopsis of this movie is:
That sounds like a classic Bollywood drama! Here is the synopsis and story of the 1970 Hindi film, “Rootha Na Karo”.
The film is a romantic drama starring Shashi Kapoor and Nanda in the lead roles. It revolves around the relationship between the wealthy Neeta and her poor but devoted fiancé, Sudhir, and the emotional turmoil caused by Neeta’s jealous cousin, Naina.
Now the story in detail (Spoiler Alert):
Neeta (played by Nanda) is a young woman who lives with her widowed mother and her cousin, Naina (played by Kumari Naaz). Neeta is deeply in love with her longtime friend, Sudhir (played by Shashi Kapoor), a poor but honest young man. Neeta’s mother gives her consent for their marriage, recognizing their deep affection for one another.
Unbeknownst to Neeta, her cousin Naina is also secretly in love with Sudhir and harbors deep jealousy towards Neeta. Naina decides to separate the couple and begins poisoning Neeta’s mind against Sudhir. She constantly warns Neeta that Sudhir is only marrying her for her considerable wealth.
Naina cleverly exploits Sudhir’s financial status and Neeta’s growing doubts. The situation escalates when Naina takes Neeta to a lawyer’s office, where Sudhir is seen preparing property documents. Naina convinces a now-fearful Neeta that Sudhir is trying to transfer Neeta’s property into his own name.
Neeta confronts Sudhir, accusing him of being a gold-digger. Deeply hurt by her lack of trust, Sudhir reveals the truth: he was actually preparing documents to transfer all of Neeta’s property to her other cousin, Anil, as he did not want to touch a single penny of her wealth. Feeling insulted and heartbroken, Sudhir walks away.
Overcome with guilt and realizing the damage she has caused, Neeta confronts Naina. During this final confrontation, Naina confesses her schemes, admitting that she was in love with Sudhir and tried to separate them because her feelings were not reciprocated. Following her confession, Naina takes poison and dies, urging Neeta not to lose a good man like Sudhir.
Neeta rushes back to Sudhir, apologizes profusely, and begs him not to leave her. With the help of their cousin Anil, who explains how Naina had systematically poisoned Neeta’s mind, Sudhir is finally placated, and the two reconciles.
The film is essentially a love triangle and a drama about trust, deceit, and jealousy, ultimately concluding with the triumph of true love over manipulative schemes.
Four songs out of seven are already covered in this blog. Here’s the fifth one. Today’s song is also a rare one. “Mere Saakiyan Mere Dolruba” sung by Rafi Saab is from “Rootha Na Karo” (1970). This song is written by Hasrat Jaipuri and composed by C Ramchandra.
Shashi Kapoor lip syncs to this song, which is shown as if he is in a dream. Later on, we can also see Nanda who has dressed up as a dancer.

Satyajit ji,
I can empathize with the way you feel about this denial of Bharat Ratna award for Mohammed Rafi Sahab.
In recent times it’s been awarded posthumously too. So may be there is a chance. Either way, he himself is beyond this pain and gain. It is just that the innumerable fans will be happy to see the contribution of the legend recognized in this way.
Nice longish song posted. Rafi sahab’s 101st birth anniversary is coming up giving one more chance for paying our tributes.
Regards.

Rootha Na Karo was a comeback movie for C Ramachandra and he brought both Rafi and Kishore Kumar. Two solos by Kishore Kumar are also superb and well picturised. Please share them in this forum.

One solo by Kishore Kumar (the title song) from this movie has already been covered in the blog. In fact you have commented on that song as well. That song was C Ramchandra’s 600th song in the blog.
