‘Sindbaad The Sailor” (1952), also known as ‘Sindbaad Jahaazi’ was produced by Balwant Bhatt under the banner of Deepak Pictures and was directed by his brother, Nanabhai Bhatt. The cast included Naseem Bano, Ranjan, Nirupa Roy, Pran, Jayant, Bhagwan, Yashodhara Katju, Samson, etc. In some places including the poster of the film, Sindbaad is written/printed as ‘Sinbad’. The Arabic name is ‘Sindibaadu’. So, using the title of the film as ‘Sindbaad The Sailor/Sindbaad Jahaazi’ seems appropriate.

The director of the film, Nanabhai Bhatt (12/06/1915 – 24/04/1999), also known as Batuk Bhatt, was mostly into producing and directing low budget ‘B’ grade films covering the mythology, fantasy and action/stunt genre. He was also the story and screenplay writer. He was born as Yeshwant Bhatt in Porbandar, Gujarat where he did early schooling. His elder brother, Balwant Bhatt was already associated with films during the last stage of silent films and he was working with Prakash Pictures.

Nanabhai Bhatt also moved to Mumbai and worked in small studios as assistant, learning the nuances of all the important segments of filmmaking. He joined Prakash Pictures as a sound recordist in 1930 when the cinema in India were on a transitory phase from silent to talkie films. By early 1940s, Nanabhai graduated to direct first film, Wadia Movietone’s ‘Muqaabla’ (1942) jointly with Babubhai Mistry, a special effect wizard. It was the first Hindi film which used ‘split-screen technology’ to show Fearless Nadia in double role. Probably, it was the first film in which a transformable film set was used to convert a gambling den into a vast drawing room.

Nanabhai Bhatt’s first solo directed film was Basant Picture’s ‘Hunterwaali Ki Beti’ (1943), a stunt film, probably the first time the concept of sequel in Hindi films was introduced as a sequel to ‘Hunterwaali’ (1935). After directing few films in-betwwen, in 1946, he set up his film production company, Deepak Pictures which produced a stunt adventure, ‘Lady Robinhood’ (1946) with Fearless Nadia. Side by side, he continued to direct other films, notably for Homi Wadia’s Basant Pictures. Later on, he concentrated mainly in directing mythological and religious films, some of which were for Basant Pictures. In his nearly four decades in the film industry, Nanabhai Bhatt directed 46 Hindi films and produced about a dozen Hindi films under different banners. His last Hindi film he produced was ‘Kabzaa’ (1988) which was directed by his son, Mahesh Bhatt. He also produced and directed some Gujarati films.

Despite his many successes in Hindi and Gujarati film, Nanabhai Bhatt faced challenges, including the evolving tastes of audiences, technological changes in film production, and competition from newer filmmakers. At the same time, he was also not keeping good health. In the later years, his eye sight got impaired leading to the complete blindness due to glaucoma. So, he virtually retired from the film industry by 1990.

Nanabhai Bhatt passed away on April 24, 1999, at the age of 83. He has left his legacy with his children, Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt (sons from Shirin Mohammed Ali), writer and actor, Robin Bhatt, the son of Hemlata, his granddaughters like Pooja Bhatt and Alia Bhatt. Another grandson, Mohit Suri (through Heena Suri, his daughter with Hemlata) is a well-known director. Sunil Darshan and Dharmesh Darshan (through Sheila Sabharwal, his daughter with Shirin Mohammed Ali) have also directed some films.

Coming back to the film, ‘Sindbaad The Sailor’ (1952), unfortunately the film is not available to watch on any video sharing platform. Since video clips of all songs of the film are available, one can hope that someday, the film will become available. The film’s title indicates that the story of the film is based on one of the folk tales collection under ‘One Thousand And One Nights’ (Arabian Nights). From the synopsis of the film available online, I presume that the story of the film is based on one of the seven voyages Sindbaad had taken during his life time.

In this film I guess the story of Sindbaad has been tweaked. Ranjan plays the role of Sindbaad, on his voyage to replenish his wealth. During his voyage, he comes across a kingdom where he falls in love with Princess Zulekha (Naseem Bano), the daughter of the Sultan. This is not liked by his Vazir, Razamaq (Pran) who wants the princess Zulekha to himself with an eye on Sultan’s kingdom. So, Razamaq plots to sideline Sindbaad. He with the help from a magician and a courtesan Haseena (Nirupa Roy) overthrow Sultan. Sindbaad is captured and is put in a torture cell. However, courtesan Haseena has a change of heart when she starts appreciating Sindbaad of his true love for princess Zulekha. She helps Sindbaad to escape but at the cost of her own life. Sindbaad escapes with Zulekha and organises his forces (mainly his armed sailors). In the final climax of the naval battle, Sindbaad sinks Razamaq’s ship in which he and his magician die thus restoring the kingdom to Princes Zulekha and Sindbaad uniting with her.

The film had eight songs written by Anjum Jaipuri (4), Shyam Hindi (3) and Chand Pandit (1) which were set to music by Chitragupt. Six songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 7th song, ‘saathhi uthaa baadbaan’ rendered by Mohammed Rafi and Chitragupt who sing for Ranjan and Bhagwan, respectively. The song is written by Shyam Hindi. In the song picturisation Naseem Bano is seen with Ranjan which suggests that Sindbaad is sailing on the ship after his escape with princess Zulekha (Naseem Bano). Under the circumstances, the lyrics of the song convey the need for guidance and protection from Allah (Allah beli) for their safe voyage.

The songs jumps few words in video clip. Hence the lyrics given below are based on Audio clip.

Sindbad the sailor was known for its excellent songs by Rafi, Shamshad Begam and Kishore Kumar which are remembered even today.
