In this short write-up, I present the last song, ‘aaya hoon gharbaar chhod main ban ne filmi star’ to be covered on the Blog from an obscure film, ‘Bahke Kadam’ (1971). The song is written by Dharmesh Dutt which is set to music by Usha Khanna. The film was produced and directed by Dharmesh Dutt who also acted in the film and wrote the songs. The cast included Agha, Aprajita, Dharmesh Dutt, Madan Puri, Jagirdar, Sundar, Mridula, Sulochana, Kanu Roy etc. This appears to be the only film of Dharmesh Dutt as a producer, director, actor and song writer. The VCD/DVD of the film is not available on any video sharing platform.
The song under discussion is rendered by Mohammed Rafi. Since video clip of the song is not available, I can only make a guess based on the lyrics that the song may have been picturised on Agha. Two features of this song are that in the last stanza, suddenly the mukhda part of the song, ‘dil dekhe dekho’ gets incorporated. Incidentally, the old song was also rendered by Mohammed Rafi and set to music by Usha Khanna.
The song also contains the names of actor, Johny Walker and Dilip Kumar. There are many instances of Hindi films songs containing the names of the popular actors in the lyrics. The earliest one of such songs is ‘ishq mein ham mar jaayenge’ from ‘Nishaana’ (1950) in which name of Geeta Bali gets mentioned. Another song in this category, I recall, is from ‘Khilaadiyon Kaa Khilaadi’ (1996) in which the names of Amitabh Bachchan, Dilip Kumar and Akshay (Kumar) are used in the refrain.
This type of song with some ‘take-off’ from an existing film song with the same tune and lyrics is distinct from the parody song in which new lyrics are put in the tune of an old song. But the common purpose of both parody and ‘take-off’ songs is generally to create comical effects. I have not much idea as to when this type of ‘take off’ in the new song came into practice. But I am aware that a few Kishore Kumar’s songs did have such songs like a line, ‘teri gathri mein laaga chor musaafir jaag zara’ from ‘Dhoop Chhaaon’ (1935) gets incorporated in the song, paanch rupayya baarah aana. Similarly, there are a couple of lines from old film songs in ek chatur naar karke shringaar.
There is a song, duniya paagalon kaa baazaar from ‘Chacha Chaudhary’ (1953) which is the combination of parody and ‘take-off’ song. In this song, refrains from two old songs, ‘duniya toofaan mail’ and ‘duniya kaa maza le lo duniya hamaari hai’ gets incorporated with the same tunes along with the parody song of ‘mujhe kisi se pyaar ho gaya’ from Barsaat’ (1949) in which the names of actress, Suraiyya, Nimmi and Nargis are mentioned. There may be multiple parody songs incorporated in this song.
Sometime the ‘take-off’ from old film song is used as it fits well in the mood of the song. For instance, the refrain in the tune of aana meri jaan meri jaan sunday ke sunday from ‘Shehnaayi’ (1947) is incorporated in the song, ‘Sunday din hai mulaqaat kaa’ in ‘Khooni Panja’ (1991).
With the song under discussion, all the four songs from the film have been represented on the Blog.
