Today’s song is the last and the final song from the film Sunehre Din-1949. The film made by Jagat Pictures was directed by Satish Nigam and the music was by Gyan Dutt. The cast of the film included Rehana, Raj Kapoor, Nigar Sultana, Haroon, Heera Sawant, Ramesh Sinha and others.

The songs of this film were quite enchanting and a few of them became very popular. Especially the solo song “Baharon ne jise chheda” by Mukesh and the duet “Maine dekhi jag ki reet ” by Mukesh and Shamshad Begum are heard even today by song lovers – which includes me too ! For the film’s 10 songs, Gyan Dutt had used 8 singers like Geeta Roy, Shamshad Begum, Sulochana Kadam, Kalyani, Mukesh, Khan Mastana, Durrani and Surinder Kaur. Today’s song is by Surinder Kaur.

Surinder Kaur was mainly a Punjabi film singer. Though she sang 58 songs in 22 Hindi films, very few songs of hers became popular. She sang in Hindi films from 1947 to 1952. it could be one of the reasons why she could not get more melodious songs. if she had continued after 1952, probably she would have got more variety of melodious songs from the newer Music Directors in the ” Golden Era”.

Singer SURINDER KAUR – The nightingale of Punjab. Surinder Kaur was born in Lahore, on 25-11-1929, in a Punjabi-Sikh family. She was the sister of Parkash Kaur and the mother of Dolly Guleria, both noted Punjabi singers. She sang mainly Punjabi folk songs, where she is credited for pioneering and popularising the genre and later was known as the ‘Nightingale of Punjab’. She also sang songs in some Hindi movies as playback singer, between 1948 and 1952.Surinder Kaur made her professional debut with a live performance on Lahore Radio in August 1943, and the following year on 31 August 1943, she and her elder sister, Parkash Kaur cut their first duet, “maavan ‘te dheeyan ral baithian”, for the HMV label, emerging as superstars across the Indian subcontinent.

Following Punjab’s division in 1947 owing to partition of India, Kaur and her parents relocated to Ghaziabad, Delhi. Next she married Prof. Joginder Singh Sodhi, a lecturer in Punjabi literature at Delhi University. Recognising her talent, her husband became her support system, and soon she started a career as a playback singer in the Hindi film industry in Bombay, introduced by music director Ghulam Haider. Under him she sang three songs in the 1948 film Shaheed, including Badnam Na Ho Jaye Mohabbat Ka Fasaana, Aanaa hai toh aajaao and Taqdeer ki aandhi…hum kahan aur tum kahan. Her true interest however lay in stage performances and reviving Punjabi folk songs, and she eventually moved back to Delhi in 1952.

She sang 58 songs in 22 films in Hindi. First film was Mehendi-47 and the last film was Aandhiyan-52.

In all, Kaur recorded more than 2,000 songs, including duets with Asa Singh Mastana, Karnail Gill, Harcharan Grewel, Rangila Jatt, and Didar Sandhu. Although her life and collaboration with Sodhi was cut short upon the educator’s death in 1976, she continued the family’s creative tradition via duets with their daughter and disciples, Rupinder Kaur Guleria, better known as Dolly Guleria and granddaughter Sunaini, culminating in the 1995 LP, ‘Surinder Kaur – The Three Generations.’

She was conferred the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Punjabi Folk Music in 1984, by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India’s National Academy of Music, Dance and Theatre, the Millennium Punjabi Singer award, and Padma Shri award in 2006 for her contribution in Arts. The Guru Nanak Dev University conferred on her a doctorate in the year 2002.

Towards the later part of her life, wanting to get close to her mitti, Surinder Kaur settled in Panchkula in 2004, with an aim to construct a house in Zirakpur, near Chandigarh. Subsequently, on 22 December 2005, she suffered a heart attack and was admitted to General Hospital, Panchkula. Later, however, she looked up and personally went to Delhi to receive the coveted Padma Shri Award in January 2006. It is another matter that she was painfully aware of the events that delayed the honour for so long, despite her unparalleled contribution to Punjabi music. But even when she received the award she was regretful that the nomination for the same had come from Haryana and not Punjab for which she worked tirelessly through five decades.

In 2006, a prolonged illness prompted her to seek treatment in the US. She died in a New Jersey hospital on 15 June at the age of 77. She was survived by three daughters, eldest, singer Dolly Guleria who lives in Panchkula, followed by Nandini Singh and Pramodini Jaggi, both settled in New Jersey.

One of the cast members was Nigar Sultana (21 June 1932 – 21 April 2000) . She appeared in Aag (1948), Patanga (1949), Sheesh Mahal (1950), Mirza Ghalib (1954), Yahudi (1958), Do Kaliyaan (1968), etc. but she is most notably remembered for playing the role of “Bahar begum” in the historical epic film Mughal-e-Azam (1960). She was the wife of filmmaker K. Asif that time. She died in April 2000, in Mumbai.
Nigar Sultana was born on 21 June 1932 in Hyderabad, India. She was the youngest daughter in a family of five. She has two brothers and two sisters. She spent her childhood in Hyderabad where her father held the rank of a Major in the Nizam’s State Army. She went to school for a while and later studied at home. She took part in a school drama on one occasion and ever after was keen on acting. After her father’s retirement, the family faced financial difficulties and Nigar was married off to a Driver. After she became pregnant the couple took divorce.

The first film Nigar ever saw was Hum Tum Aur Woh (1938). She was so utterly thrilled by it that when Jagdish Sethi, a friend of her father’s, offered her the lead in a film he was making with Mohan Bhavnani, she took it on the spot.

She entered films with the 1946 film Rangbhoomi. She also did a small role in the film 1857. Then came Bela-47 as a Heroine opposite Jairaj. Raj Kapoor’s Aag (1948) was her first big break to Bollywood. She played the character role of “Nirmala”, which was equally appreciated by critics and audience. After that, she played character roles in a number of films.

Her big picture was Shikayat (1948), made in Poona; and after that many more in which she played leading roles. She played the role of the court dancer Bahar, who envies Prince Salim’s (Dilip Kumar) love for Anarkali (Madhubala) in the film Mughal-e-Azam (1960). The songs Teri mehfil mein and jab raat ho aisi matwali were picturised on her.Her other films included Dara (1953) and Khyber.

Patanga (1949), Dil Ki Basti (1949), Sheesh Mahal (1950), Khel (1950), Daman (1951), Anand Bhavan (1953), Mirza Ghalib (1954), Tankhah (1956), Durgesh Nandini (1956) and Yahudi (1958) are among her noted movies. She was most active during the 1950s and appeared in only a lesser number of movies later. Jumbish: A Movement – The Movie in 1986 was her last Bollywood film. The famous song of Patanga-49 ” Mere piya gaye Rangoon” was filmed on her. She looked very attractive in that song. The song is still popular.

When she was working for Ranjit Films, she posed for a provocative photo. On the publication of that photo, Ranjit removed her from their films. Later many other heroines did such Photo sessions, but the First one daring to do so was Nigar Sultana.

Nigar Sultana was linked with Pakistani actor Darpan Kumar. She had actually married him, when he was called to Bombay by Kardar for his films. In the mid 50s when she was in financial difficulties Darpan and she were divorced. On 13 June 1959, Nigar Sultana held a press conference specifically to deny reports that she had married the Pakistani actor. Later, Nigar Sultana married K. Asif, producer-director of Mughal-e-Azam (1960). When finally she divorced K.Asif, he gave her 200 rupees per month as compensation.

Nigar had close friendship with actor Shyam, Kamal Amrohi, Najam Naqvi, Rehman, Zuhur Raja, D N Madhok also.

Nigar Sultana was the mother of actress Heena Kausar. Heena Kausar appeared in secondary roles in a large number of films during the 1970s and early 1980s.

Two actresses of the 1950s, Chitra (born Afsar-un-nisa) and Paras (born Yusuf-un-nisa) are Nigar Sultana’s nieces.

She had also been married to S. M. Yusuf when he lived in India, with whom she had one child. The child became actress Heena Kausar.

Nigar acted in 51 films in her 26 years’ career.

She died on 23 April 2000 in Mumbai . ( Thanks to book Inhe na Bhulana by Harish Raghuwanshi ji, book Ateet ke Sitare and my notes, for this information.)

In 1949, Raj Kapoor was still a novice, though he had a few films in his kitty by that time. (that is why, in the film credits, his name was second, after Rehana). 1949 was actually the year when he became a STAR. His first film of 1949 was Sunehre Din, which was a flop film, but subsequently, films like Parivartan, Andaz and Barsaat decisively declared him an important contributor to Hindi films. He was a connoisseur of music. If he had not become an actor, he would have surely become a good singer.

The late film historian, Nalin Shah ji had written an article in “Playback and Fast Forward ” on Raj Kapoor and his music sense. It was published somewhere in 2008 or so. I have preserved that interesting article and sometime in future, I will present it in an adapted form (it is a very long article) for our readers, in one of my future posts.

Let us now listen to the last song of this film by Surinder kaur. With this song, the film gets YIPPEED ! Enjoy….

Incidentally, Sunehre Din as I understand was the first movie in which Mukesh sang for Raj Kapoor. Please confirm.
