‘Aurat Pair Kee Jootee Naheen Hai’ (1985) was produced by B K Adarsh and was directed by Prithviraj Chatterjee. The cast included Marc Zuber, Deepti Naval, Gulshan Grover, Sachin, Satyen Kappu, Anjali Sen, Goga Kapoor, Jagdeep, Brahm Bhardwaj, Shivraj, Dulari, Vikas Anand etc.

The VCD of the film is available on one of the video sharing platforms but with a poor quality of video. It is obvious from the title of the film that it is a feminist film. Before watching the film, I read the synopsis of the story which gave me an impression of tackling the feminist subject in an amateurish way. But a ghazal in the film forced me to watch the film. I am happy that despite a poor quality of video, I have watched the film in one sitting and felt satisfied the way the theme was handled in a matured way without the additional doses of songs and sub-plots. The story of the film was written by B K Adarsh and probably it was his first film (out of about 15 films he produced) which tackled an important social issue. Unfortunately, the film failed badly at the box office.

The story of the film is as under:

Shobha (Deepti Naval) gets married to a lawyer, Rakesh (Marc Zubair) despite stiff opposition from her parents (Shivraj and Dulari). Their objection to Rakesh as her husband is that he is rigid in his idealistic views and moral values, apart from a self-serving egoistic. Shobha’s parents disown her because of her disobedience. His rigid adherence to idealism forces Rakesh to lose his job in a solicitor’s office because he does not want to defend a person whom he knows to be a killer. But soon he gets another job. Kamal (Sachin), Rakesh’s childhood friend is terminally ill but believes in enjoying the life and spreading joy for others during the short time at his disposal (like Rajesh Khanna in ‘Anand’, 1970). Most of the time, Kamal is in Rakesh’s house for breakfast and lunch

Shobha has exactly opposite temperament than that of Rakesh. She is practical, caring and avoids arguments with Rakesh. He is critical of her cooking, shopping, and her friendly behaviour with other males. Despite his dictator-like behaviour, she adjusts to his whims and idealism and suffers his insults silently. Whenever she has a different point of view, he counters her by lawyers sophistry arguments. At one time, Rakesh even becomes suspicious of Shobha for showing her undue concern for Kamal. But he does not know that Kamal is terminally ill and Shobha’s friendly disposition toward him is actually her way of keeping him happy. Shobha is trapped in a marriage with a self-serving egoistic and male chauvinist husband. She has no backing from her parents as they have disowned her for going against their decision in marrying Rakesh.

Shobha is saddled with another problem. A few years back, without the knowledge of Rakesh, Shobha had taken a loan from Sampat (Gulshan Grover) against the guarantee by forging the signature of her father (who will not give her the guarantee) for money required for an emergency surgery of Rakesh. Sampat has been periodically blackmailing her for some petty amount for not disclosing to her husband about her forgery. Things comes to open when Sampat sends a letter to Rakesh about it who gets very angry on her. The matter goes to police when Sampat files an FIR against Shobha for forgery and it becomes a prestige issue for Rakesh. He scolds and fires verbal abuses by telling her act of forgery worse than a prostitute. She gets very upset but again suffers in silent.

One day, Shobha’s friend, Madhavi (Anjali Sen) meets Shobha and gives her a good news that she is finally getting married to Sampat after he has assured her that he would give up his vagabond behaviour like cheating and blackmailing. Shobha, on the other hand, gives her bad news about the forged document which Sampat is holding and now he had filed an FIR. Madhavi assures her that she would make Sampat withdraw FIR and give back the forged document. Sampat sends back the forged document to Shobha to keep his promise to Madhavi to give up cheating and blackmailing. Shobha hands over the forged document to Rakesh who is extremely happy that he is saved from losing his status as an idealistic and morally upright person. He apologises to Shobha for venting his anger and firing her with verbal abuses. But now, she has enough of him.

The film ends with Shobha’s shocked decision for Rakesh to leave the house forever with her intention to forget even about his existence in her life in the past as well as in the future.

There are interesting dialogues between Rakesh (Marc Zubair) and his Solicitor Boss (Goga Kapoor) about practicality of following one’s idealism rigidly. Towards the end of the film there is a long monologue by Shobha (Deepti Naval) about what she had undergone during her married life. She married Rakesh to come out of her father’s ‘prison’ but she has actually shifted to another ‘prison’. Sachin makes a special appearance in the role of a childhood friend of Rakesh just to show the contrasting personality. He helps Shobha and keeps her in joyous mood knowing his friend’s temperament. Gulshan Grover has also got a different type of a villainous role of a petty blackmailer and cheater. Again, for Rakesh, he is a contrasting personality who gets reformed because he is in love with Anjali Sen to whom he does not want to lose. All in all, it is an absorbing feminist film.

The film had eight songs, including two songs in two parts. The theme song in two parts was written jointly by B K Adarsh, Qabil Ajmeri and Mumtaz Rashid. Six songs (one in two parts) were written by Qabeel Ajmeri-Mumtaz Rashid and one ghazal written by Qabeel Ajmeri. The songs were set to music by debutant, Pankaj Udhas. I present the first song, ‘tum na maano magar haqeeqat hai’ written by Qabeel Ajmeri and rendered by Pankaj Udhas. The ghazal is preceded by a four-line verses which is written by Mumtaz Rashid.

Qabil Ajmeri (27/08/1931 – 03/10/1962) was born as Abdul Rahim in Churli, near Ajmer. He was orphaned during his childhood as he lost his parents. He received his early education in a madrasa in Ajmer Dargah. He developed interest in poetry and by the age of 14, he started writing poetry. In 1948, Qabil along with his brother migrated to Hyderabad (Sind) in Pakistan and by 21 years of age, he had started participating in the mushairas as a top Urdu poet. He published his Ghazals and Nazms in a book, ‘Deed-e-Bedaar’. In 1960, Qabil suffered from tuberculous and was admitted in a sanatorium in Quetta to recuperate from tuberculous. During his period of stay, he fell in love with a nurse serving him and eventually married her. He passed away on October 03, 1962, at the young age of 31.

The context of the ghazal under discussion in the film is that Doctor (Satyen Kappu) visits Rakesh’s (Marc Zubair) house for a medical check-up where he finds Kamal (Sachin) who is under his observation for his terminal illness. During his visit, he invites them to attend a party he is hosting. In the party, Kamal sings a ghazal directed towards his close friend, Rakesh about the importance of love in the human life because for Rakesh, his idealism, moral values, work ethics have the utmost primacy in his life. The ghazal also takes Kamal in his flashback when he watches the palanquin of his beloved passing in front of him.

It is a lovely ghazal to listen. Incidentally, this ghazal rendered by Pankaj Udhas was first released as NFS in 1981 without the prelude verses.

Once born death follows, but keeps us sad if a great singer like Late Sri Pankaj leaving his place vacant.
