Today, December 25, 2025, is the 10th Remembrance Day of Sadhana, the fashion icon of Hindi cinema in the 1960s. She was also called the ‘mystery girl’ because she acted in three mystery genre of films one after another. In her short filmy career of about 15 years, she had a high success ratio in terms of hit films. She worked with top directors like Bimal Roy, Raj Khosla, Yash Chopra, Hrishikesh Mukherjee and H S Rawail. Her co-stars included Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Raj Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Rajesh Khanna and Dharmendra. Sadhana came and conquered the Hindi film industry in the 1960s and by the end of 1970s, she virtually vanished from the film industry.

Sadhana Shivdasani (02/09/1941 – 25/12/2015) was born in Karachi. Her father, Shivram Shivdasani named her after the popular actor-dancer of 1940s, Sadhana Bose. After partition in 1947, her family hurriedly shifted to India leaving everything, including the landed property in Karachi. They stayed in refugee camps in Delhi, then to Varanasi and Kolkata. The family shifted to Mumbai in 1950 and Sadhana got admission in 5th standard in Auxilium Convent School, Wadala. Her journey into films began as a background dancer in one of the songs in ‘Shri 420’ (1955) when she was still in school.

Since the family’s financial position was precarious, Sadhana took admission in Jai Hind College for the morning shift and worked as a typist in the afternoon. In Jai Hind College, Sadhana was active in the college plays. Once Arjun Hingorani, the director of the first Sindhi film of independent India, ‘Abana’ (1958), visited the college and selected her for the role of the sister to film’s lead actor, Sheila Ramani. Sadhana’s photo from the film got published in ‘Screen’ which attracted the attention of Sashadhar Mukherjee. She was selected for his film, ‘Love In Shimla’ (1960) along with Joy Mukerjee in lead roles which was directed by R K Nayyar. Before the film’s shooting started, Sadhana was trained in Filmalaya Acting School. Her very first film was a superhit making her a household name.

Soon other films followed one after another and Sadhana had a spate of super hit films like ‘Ham Dono’ (1961), ‘Parakh’ (1962), ‘Asli Naqli’ (1962) and ‘Wo Kaun Thhee’ (1964) in black & white and ‘Mere Mehboob’ (1963), ‘Rajkumar’ (1964), ‘Waqt’ (1965), ‘Aarzoo’ (1965), ‘Mera Saaya’ (1966) and ‘Anita’ (1967) in colour.

During the making the ‘Love In Shimla’ (1960), the film’s director, R K Nayyar and Sadhana fell in love and got married in 1966. In 1967, Sadhana suffered from hyperthyroidism which affected her throat and eyes bringing a brief halt to her career. After the success of ‘Mere Mehboob’ (1963), producer-director, H S Rawail had signed her for ‘Sangharsh’ (1968) opposite Dilip Kumar. However, because of her health issue, she was replaced by Vaijayantimala. She went for the treatment in the USA. After she returned from treatment, Sadhana did successful films, like ‘Ek Phool Do Mali’ (1969), ‘Intaqaum’ (1969), ‘Sachaai’ (1969), ‘Aap Aaye Bahaar Aayee’ (1971). She turned director with ‘Geeta Mera Naam’ (1974) in which she played the lead role with Sunil Dutt. After a couple of more films, Sadhana decided to retired from the film due to her health issue and also her reluctance to work in side character roles.

After the death of her husband in 1995, Sadhana avoided public appearances. She moved in the close circle of her contemporaries like Waheeda Rehman, Asha Parekh, Helen, Nanda and Shammi. Sadhana’s last public appearance was in May 2014, when she walked on the ramp alongside Ranbir Kapoor at a fashion show in Mumbai to support cancer and AIDS patients.

Sadhana passed away on December 25, 2015, at the age of 74, following a brief illness. (Note: Sadhana’s early life is mainly based on her interview appeared on Rediff.com in December 2012).

Looking back retrospectively, it is amazing how Sadhana, a newcomer in film acting, could perform three distinct roles in her first three films – a shy and plain girl who gets transformed to a confident and a beautiful girl in ‘Love In Shimla’ (1960), a village girl in ‘Parakh’ (1960) without her ‘Sadhana cut’ and the girl ‘next door’ in ‘Hum Dono’ (1961). In each of these three films, she makes her presence felt to the audience differently. And in all the three films, she worked with three different school of film direction. She may not be having as intense acting abilities as Meena Kumari and Nutan and as a heroine with dancing abilities like Vyjayantimala and Waheeda Rehman. But Sadhana won over the audience from her style, elegance and the fashion which her contemporaries lacked. Furthermore, her expressions, gestures and nuances during her song sequences like in ‘Parakh’ (1960), ‘Hum Dono’ (1961), ‘Woh Kaun Thhi’ (1964) and many more, created the lasting impressions in the minds of the audience.

Sadhana had worked with Raj Khosla in four films – ‘Ek Musaafir Ek Haseena’ (1962), ‘Wo Kaun Thhee’ (1964), ‘Mera Saaya’ (1966) and ‘Anita’ (1967). ‘Saajan Ki Galiyaan’ (1968 UR) would have been their 5th film together had it not been shelved for some unknown reasons after shooting some parts of the film. The film was produced by the Cinematographer, Fali Mistry and was directed by Raj Khosla. Dev Anand, Sadhana and Zaheeda were the main actors in the film. For Zaheeda, it was her first film in which she was doing a role of a Rajkumari. Fortunately, two songs of the film are available, thanks to the producer of the film, ‘Film Hi Film’ (1983) in which these two songs were made the part of the film’s story among others. One song has already be represented on the Blog.

On the occasion of the 10th Remembrance Day of Sadhana, I present the 2nd song from ‘Saajan Ki Galiyaan’ (1968 UR), ‘ham khoob jaante hain kya dil mein hai tumhaare’ rendered by Mohammed Rafi, Geeta Dutt and Suman Kalyanpur (an unique combination of playback singers). The song is written by Hasrat Jaipuri and set to music by Shankar-Jaikishan. The song is picturised on Dev Anand, Sadhana and Zaheeda.

The audio clip of the song has an additional antara which is majorly rendered by Geeta Dutt.

jo tum chhupa rahe ho
aankhen jataa rahee hain
ik ik karke saare parde hata rahee hai
jo tum chhupa rahe ho

aankhen jataa rahee hain
ik ik karke saare parde hata rahee hain

aa aa aa aa o o o
ab to sach sach bataao ye kaun hai tumhaare
ab to sach sach bataao ye kaun hai tumhaare

kuchh kar ke hee rahenge aankhon ke ye ishhaare
ham khoob jaante hain kya dil mein hai tumhaare
ham khoob jaante hain kya dil mein hai tumhaare

hamen bhee kuchh pata hai
tumhen bhee kuchh hai khabar
par ye behtar hai ki chup chaap kate baakee safar
hamen bhee kuchh pata hai
tumhen bhee kuchh hai khabar
par ye behtar hai ki chup chaap kate baakee safar

haan aan aan aan
khud hee dil dhoondh lenge apne apne sahaare
khud hee dil dhoondh lenge apne apne sahaare

kuchh kar ke hee rahenge aankhon ke ye ishaare
ham khoob jaante hain kya dil mein hai tumhaare
ham khoob jaante hain kya dil mein hai tumhaare

nazar nazar se milee
har ek baat khulee
kahaan pe kya hai chhupaa
ab dilon kee thhaah milee
nazar nazar se milee
har ek baat khulee
kahaan pe kya hai chhupaa
ab dilon kee thhaah milee
aa aa aa aa
baat karne lage ab ham aankhon ke sahaare
baat karne lage ab ham aankhon ke sahaare
kuchh kar ke hee rahenge aankhon ke ye ishaare
ham khoob jaante hain kya dil mein hai tumhaare
aa aa aa aa
ham khoob jaante hain kya dil mein hai tumhaare
ham khoob jaante hain kya dil mein hai tumhaare
ham khoob jaante hain kya dil mein hai tumhare
