We normally have a feeling of nostalgia towards the films we watched in our youth. We always love their music, their artists and the general experience we watched while seeing those films in the cinema halls of yore. Sometimes, in newer films, we see tributes being paid to them. Occasionally, we find the tributes a bit insipid leaving us uninspired. However, once in a while, a song makes you really feel good and enjoy it while giving you a feeling of nostalgia. Today’s song is one such song.
Before, I talk about the song, It would be prudent to talk about the main actor in this film and song.
Ishaan Khattar (born November 1, 1995) is an acclaimed Indian actor known for his versatile performances in Hindi cinema and international projects. Coming from a family deeply rooted in the entertainment industry, he is the son of actors Rajesh Khattar and Neelima Azeem, and the half-brother of actor Shahid Kapoor (from his mother’s first marriage to Pankaj Kapoor). He is a trained dancer from Shiamak Davar’s academy and has worked as an assistant director on films like Udta Punjab (2016) before transitioning fully to acting. His career began early with a child role in the 2005 comedy Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi!, alongside Shahid Kapoor.
However, his breakthrough as a lead came with Iranian director Majid Majidi’s drama Beyond the Clouds (2017), where he played a drug dealer. The film premiered at festivals and earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut and praise for his charisma. His first major commercial success was the romantic drama Dhadak (2018), a remake of the Marathi film Sairat, co-starring Janhvi Kapoor. This marked his entry into mainstream Bollywood.Khattar has since balanced diverse roles:
• He starred in the British miniseries A Suitable Boy (2020), directed by Mira Nair, earning critical acclaim.
• He appeared in the action film Khaali Peeli (2020, released digitally due to COVID-19) and the war drama Pippa (2023).
• He made his Hollywood debut in Netflix’s The Perfect Couple (2024) and had a role in Don’t Look Up (2021).
In 2025, his film Homebound, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan and co-starring Janhvi Kapoor and Vishal Jethwa, premiered at Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard section, receiving a nine-minute standing ovation. It was later shortlisted for the Oscars 2026 in the Best International Feature Film category and screened at Toronto International Film Festival. He also starred in the Netflix series The Royals (2025).Khattar’s career reflects a blend of artistic films, commercial projects, and global work, showcasing his range from intense dramas to action and romance. He continues to be recognized for his nuanced acting and potential in international cinema.
I find Ishaan to be quite cute, a good dancer and with the right director, He gives very nuanced performances. These days there are many movies with patriotic themes being released and the film of the day is another such movie, Pippa. For some reason, It went directly to OTT.
Pippa is a 2023 Indian Hindi-language biographical war film based on the life of Captain Balram Singh Mehta of India’s 45 Cavalry regiment who, along with his siblings, fought on the eastern front during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Named after the Soviet amphibious war tank PT-76, which floats on water like an empty tin, the film traces Mehta’s coming-of-age as he steps up to prove himself in Bangladesh Liberation War. It is an adaptation of real life events during the Battle of Garibpur in 1971, and is written and directed by Raja Krishna Menon.
The film was produced by RSVP Movies and Roy Kapur Films, with Ronnie Screwvala and Siddharth Roy Kapur as producers. It stars Ishaan Khatter, Mrunal Thakur and Priyanshu Painyuli in lead roles. The film is an adaptation of Brigadier Balram Singh Mehta’s war memoir, ‘The Burning Chaffees’.
The film premiered on 10 November 2023 on Amazon Prime Video.
Before talking about the film, I feel it would be apt to talk a bit about the Bangladeshi war of independence and what happened in the years thereof leading to the shocking events we are witness to these days with innocents being killed for their faith and times of total turmoil with no respect for the icons who made Bangladesh.
The Bangladesh Liberation War (also known as the Bangladesh War of Independence) was a pivotal armed conflict in 1971 that led to the creation of Bangladesh as an independent nation from Pakistan. Spanning from March 26 to December 16, 1971, it was rooted in decades of political, economic, and cultural discrimination against East Pakistan (present-day Bangladesh) by the West Pakistan-dominated government.
The war began with the Pakistani military’s brutal crackdown, Operation Searchlight, on March 25, 1971, targeting Bengali intellectuals, students, and nationalists in Dhaka, which escalated into a genocide with estimates of 300,000 to 3 million deaths and widespread atrocities, including mass rapes.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, leader of the Awami League, declared independence on March 26, forming a government-in-exile, while the Mukti Bahini (liberation forces) waged guerrilla warfare.
The conflict drew international attention, with millions of refugees fleeing to India, prompting India’s intervention on December 3, 1971, after Pakistani preemptive strikes.
The Indo-Pakistani War lasted 13 days, culminating in the surrender of Pakistani forces in Dhaka on December 16, 1971, marking Victory Day for Bangladesh. (Vijay Diwas!)
This event not only birthed Bangladesh but also reshaped South Asian geopolitics, with India emerging as a key ally.
Post-Independence Era (1972–1990): Nation-Building and Military Rule
After independence, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (Mujib) returned from Pakistani custody and became Prime Minister in 1972, adopting a secular, socialist constitution.
However, economic challenges, famine in 1974, and political unrest led to his assassination in a military coup on August 15, 1975.
This ushered in military rule under Major General Ziaur Rahman (1977–1981), who founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), shifted toward Islamic identity, and amended the constitution to include “absolute trust and faith in Almighty Allah.”
Zia was assassinated in 1981, followed by General Hussain Muhammad Ershad’s coup in 1982, who ruled until mass protests forced his resignation in 1990.
Democratic Transition and Bipolar Politics (1991–2008)
The 1990s saw the restoration of parliamentary democracy, with power alternating between the BNP led by Khaleda Zia (Ziaur Rahman’s widow) and the Awami League under Sheikh Hasina (Mujib’s daughter).
Key developments included economic liberalization, but politics were marred by corruption, strikes, and violence. Caretaker governments oversaw elections in 1996, 2001, and 2006, but a 2007 military-backed interim government delayed polls until 2008, when Hasina won.
Hasina’s Dominance and Authoritarianism (2009–2024)
Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League secured consecutive victories in 2008, 2014, 2018, and 2024, amid allegations of rigged elections, suppression of opposition (including BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami), and human rights abuses.
Her rule emphasized secularism, economic growth (Bangladesh became a lower-middle-income country), and trials for 1971 war crimes, but critics accused her of authoritarianism, media censorship, and favouritism.
Islamist groups like Jamaat-e-Islami were banned in 2023 for terrorism links.
The 2024 Uprising and Interim Government (2024–2025)
In July 2024, student-led protests against job quotas escalated into a nationwide “Monsoon Revolution,” demanding Hasina’s resignation amid economic woes and inequality.
On August 5, 2024, Hasina fled to India after over 300 deaths in clashes, ending her 15-year rule.
An interim government was formed on August 8, 2024, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus as Chief Adviser, tasked with reforms and elections.
The government lifted bans on Jamaat-e-Islami and pursued accountability for Hasina-era abuses, but faced criticism for delays in elections (originally due by November 2024, now potentially 2026) and alleged political repression using amended anti-terrorism laws.
Rising Islamist Influence and Takeover Claims (2024–2025)
Post-Hasina, Islamist groups have gained visibility, filling a political vacuum amid fragmented opposition.
Jamaat-e-Islami, historically tied to 1971 pro-Pakistan militias, has allied with BNP and participated in protests, advocating for Sharia-influenced policies.
Reports highlight increased attacks on minorities (e.g., Hindus), temple vandalism, and radical mobilization, with over 2,000 incidents documented by October 2024.
Critics, including Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed, accuse the Yunus government of enabling Islamists through election rigging and alliances, potentially leading to radical dominance.
Yunus has denied “Islamist takeover” claims, emphasizing reforms, but tensions persist with military discord and BNP leader Tarique Rahman’s return in December 2025, signaling possible Islamist-BNP coalitions.
As of December 2025, while no full takeover has occurred, Islamist influence has surged, threatening Bangladesh’s secular foundations amid ongoing reforms and uncertainty over elections.
Now, Let’s talk about the plot of the film.
On 25 March 1971, Pakistan Army soldiers entered Dhaka University and indiscriminately fired at students and staff, with the tragedy becoming known as the 1971 Dhaka University massacre. Pakistan’s President Yahya Khan launched Operation Searchlight to crush the Bengali nationalist movement. Thousands were killed, and thousands of Bengali women were captured as sex slaves by the Pakistani Army. Millions fled across the border into India to take refuge.
Captain Balram Singh Mehta is a young officer in the 45th Cavalry regiment, which is equipped with the PT-76 tank, nicknamed ‘Pippa’. He has disciplinary issues and tends to often get into trouble with his senior officers. His elder brother is Major Ram Mehta, who is trying to instill discipline in him brother. Radha Mehta is their sister, and the three of them live with their mother Maati in Delhi.
One day, Major Ram is called to a forward area in preparation for the upcoming war. Captain Balram is denied from going to the front and assigned a desk job because of his indiscipline, while the rest of his regiment proceeds to the front. Meanwhile, Radha proves herself to be good at cryptography and is recruited into the ‘Communication and Analysis Wing’, a signals intelligence organisation that decodes enemy messages.
Major Ram is ordered to covertly enter East Pakistan (Bangladesh) under a false name, to train the Mukti Bahini, and advise them in conducting operations. Captain Balram is ordered to work on the PT-76 tank to come up with some improvements, which he does successfully. While on an inspection tour, the Army Chief General Sam Manekshaw is impressed by his innovations and orders him to join his regiment on the front.
Major Ram leads the Mukti Bahini in a number of successful operations against the Pakistan Army. However, during one of the operations he gets captured. He is taken to a camp where he is tortured for information. However, he is able to endure the torture and does not reveal his identity or any other information.
Captain Balram’s regiment along with the 14th Punjab battalion crosses the border and engages Pakistani units in the Battle of Garibpur. In the battle, Captain Balram’s senior officer and squadron commander, Major Daljit “Chiefy” Singh Narang, is killed in action, requiring Captain Balram to assume command. Captain Balram successfully leads his unit to victory.
Soon after, he receives a call from Radha that as per intelligence sources, Major Ram is missing in action. By coincidence, a captured Pakistani Bengali officer who has rebelled against the Pakistan Army tells him that there is one Indian Army officer being held captive at a particular post.
Radha also decodes a Pakistani communication that indicates that the United States Seventh Fleet is moving towards East Pakistan in order to intervene in support of Pakistan. That brings an extra urgency to India’s operations to secure victory and Pakistan’s surrender before the US ships can get within striking distance.
Captain Balram’s troop makes contact with the Mukti Bahini, who offers to lead him to the camp where Major Ram is being held. Major Ram is about to be shot for not revealing any information, but the Mukti Bahini rebels reach at the right time and shoot his would-be executioner. Captain Balram’s tank unit also arrives, and after a fierce battle, the Pakistani camp is captured and many Bengali women PoW are freed. Major Ram and Captain Balram are also reunited.
Shortly after, the Pakistan Army surrendered, and Bangladesh became independent. Major Ram, Captain Balram and Radha return home to their mother.
It is sad to note that the nation that was freed by the Indian Army and Bangladesh’s own freedom fighters has been taken over by Islamists who are hell bent on taking it back to the stone ages.
Coming to the song of the day, It is set in an Army mess where the officers and their spouses are having fun, dancing and making merry. The song has been composed by AR Rehman and reminds one of the Shammi Kapoor era songs in many ways. The song is really delightful with its lyrics being written by Shellee who is quietly doing some great songs (Remember Manmarziyaan?). This song is sung primarily by Arijit Singh and features others including Pooja Tiwari, Nisa Shetty, Rakshita Suresh.
Before posting the lyrics I would like to talk a bit about Shellee and Arijit Singh.
Shellee: A Note on His Career as a Lyricist,Shellee (born Shailender Singh Sodhi on January 4, 1975, in Chandigarh, India) is a renowned Indian poet, film lyricist, and writer, celebrated for his literary depth and authentic use of Punjabi and regional dialects in Bollywood songs. Coming from a literary family—his father, Himmat Singh Sodhi, was a prominent Punjabi poet and scholar—Shellee grew up immersed in poetry and literature. He studied theater at Panjab University, Chandigarh, and initially aspired to act or assist legendary lyricist Gulzar. After moving to Mumbai in 1995 and facing early challenges (including several unreleased films), he transitioned fully to songwriting. His breakthrough came with the 2009 film Dev.D (directed by Anurag Kashyap, music by Amit Trivedi), where he penned iconic tracks like “Pardesi,” “Dhol Yara Dhol,” and “Mahi Mennu.” The songs blended raw emotion, Haryanvi influences, and poetic introspection, earning him widespread acclaim and marking his debut in mainstream Bollywood.Shellee has since collaborated extensively with composers like Amit Trivedi and directors like Anurag Kashyap and Abhishek Chaubey. His work often draws from personal poetry, regional vocabulary, and social themes, introducing Punjabi poetry to younger audiences. He prefers being called a poet over a lyricist, emphasizing that his lyrics stem from unrestricted poetic expression rather than fitting tunes alone. Key films and notable songs include:
• Dev.D (2009) – “Pardesi,” “Dhol Yara Dhol”
• Udta Punjab (2016) – “Chitta Ve” (a gritty track addressing Punjab’s drug crisis, which faced censorship battles but became a cultural milestone)
• Manmarziyaan (2018) – “Daryaa,” “Hallaa,” “Bijlee Giregi”
• Phillauri (2017)
• Veere Di Wedding (2018)
• Jersey (2022) – Earned a Filmfare nomination for Best Lyricist
• Pippa (2023) – Collaboration with A.R. Rahman
• Other projects: Hum Do Hamare Do (2021), Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat (2022), Coke Studio tracks, and independent music with bands like Agnee
Shellee’s lyrics are praised for their nuance, cultural authenticity, and ability to advance the story—often incorporating Punjabi idioms, folk elements, and introspective layers. He has also written dialogues, background music, and worked on Punjabi films like Jahankilla (2024).As of 2025, Shellee continues to contribute to Hindi cinema and independent music, maintaining a focus on meaningful, non-formulaic work while advocating for better recognition and royalties for lyricists. His career reflects a blend of literary heritage and bold, contemporary storytelling in Bollywood.
Coming to Arijit Singh, Arijit Singh (born April 25, 1987, in Jiaganj, Murshidabad, West Bengal) is widely regarded as one of the most successful and influential playback singers in Indian cinema today. Arijit began his journey in reality television, appearing on Fame Gurukul (2005) and later winning 10 Ke 10 Le Gaye Dil (2007). However, his breakthrough came when music director Pritam discovered him and gave him his first major Bollywood break with the song “Phir Mohabbat” from Murder 2 (2011). The turning point arrived in 2013 with “Tum Hi Ho” from Aashiqui 2, a song that became a cultural phenomenon and established him as the voice of modern romance. Since then, Arijit has delivered a string of chart-topping and emotionally resonant songs, earning him a massive fanbase and numerous accolades. As of 2025, he continues to dominate the industry, consistently delivering songs that resonate with millions and set new benchmarks for playback singing in India. He has really sung today’s song very well. He almost doesn’t sound like himself! It showcases his versatility very well.
Since, I have talked about the lyricist and main singer of the song, It would be fitting to talk about the song’s composer too.

Naheen Tujhse Hai Patna Pataana
Naheen Zaar Zaar Zaar Mujhe Rona

Tu Fauji Aaj Tipsy Ho Gaya aa aa
Jaa Be Jaa Romeo Deewana
