Today’s song is from the Mythological film Jai Mahadev-1955.

The film produced by Ratlal Vohra, was directed by Ramchandra Thakur. The Music Director was Manna Dey. The cast of the film had as usual, a long list of actors. Some main actors were Nalini Jaywant, Trilok Kapoor, S.N.Tripathi, Dar Kashmiri, Shyam Sunder, Jeevan, Rewa Shankar, Heera Sawant etc etc. There were 4 Guest Artists, which included Umakant Desai (who had done the role of Lakshman in 7 films on Ramayana Stories).

It is very sad that because of intentional wrong education for the last 200 years, we were made to forget all the details of our cultural lifestyles. Thankfully, nowadays some awakening is observed. Hopefully, we should be once again getting all the lost benefits once again.

Sometime back I saw one video on Whatsapp, wherein the surveyor asked some simple questions on our Mythology to some College students- girls and Boys. Their answers were pathetic. For example, his one question was ” whose brother was Kans ?” The young generation’s answers were Duryodhan, Ravan, Hanuman, Karna etc etc. They did not know the simple division of Ramayan and Mahabharat periods. There is no point in blaming them. Were they ever trained/ taught anything about it through their Textbooks ? No. Never ! Reading outside the Text books is non existent, especially after the arrival of Video games and Mobile phones.

Indian Mythology talks of three Loks, i.e. Swarg, Prithvi and Paatal, allotted each to Gods, Humans and Demons respectively. The entire Universe is controlled by the Celestial Trinity of BRAHMA-the creator, VISHNU-the sustainer and MAHESH-the destroyer. This again may be symbolic as every being has 3 stages of Birth, Life and Death.

In India there is no dearth of Gods. Different forms of God are worshipped in every state and every community in India. In olden times there were two sects of population-Vaishnavas-those who worshipped Vishnu or his Avatars and Shaivas-those who worshipped Lord Shiva.

Since childhood we have been hearing that there are 33 Koti (Karod) Gods in Heaven. Has anyone tried to know what is the truth ? KOTI in Sanskrit language means Level or Class. Like when you say, ” उच्च कोटि
के विचार ” or ” उच्च कोटि का व्यवहार ” etc. Actually, Upnishads say that there are 33 levels of Gods or Gods are divided in 33 levels. Like this…

No. Class/Level Remarks
8 VASU means 8 Gods are at Vasu Level
11 Rudra means 11 Gods are at Rudra Level
1 Indra means 1 God is at Indra Level
1 Prajapati means 1 God is at Prajapati Level
12 Adityas means 12 Gods are at Aditya Level
Total 33 Koti/ Levels

How many people know this ? It is a sad state of affairs that due to inadequate knowledge of basic concepts and matters of culture and religion, we cut a sorry figure when we are criticised on the matters of our Pride. To subscribe to the fashionable slogan “Religion should be behind your house doors. It is a highly personal matter.” Nowadays nothing is Personal. If you are not aware of things which can protect your religion and culture you have to suffer many times. I do hope things may change in the future.

It is our belief that the Divine Trinity of Shri Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh run and control this Universe. Brahma- the Creator, Vishnu- the sustainer and Mahesh- the destroyer regulate our Birth, Life and Death. Since Bramha has a curse that He will not be worshipped in Kaliyug, the population is divided in 2 parts – those who worship any form of Vishnu (Vaishnav/Vaishnavite) and those who worship any form of Mahesh (Shaiv/Shaivite). You will find Mythological stories, films, dramas and books etc on either Vishnu or Mahesh in their different forms. For example – The Dashavtar or the 10 incarnations of Vishnu.

God Mahesh is usually depicted as constantly doing Tap (तप ), with Ash smeared all over his body. Even his Ganas (followers/assistants) have fearful appearances. The other side of Mahesh is one who promotes arts like Dancing. You must have seen the idol Natraj – he is Shiv ji !.

Out of all these Gods, my favourite is Lord Shiva. This is also because my father was a great Shiv Bhakta. he had constructed a Shiva Temple in the compound of our Bungalow in Hyderabad and every year the Mahashivratri festival used to be celebrated on a grand scale at this place. On every Monday, in the month of Shrawan and on the day of Mahashivratri, there used to be a great rush of devotees. On Mahashivratri, the whole night used to be full of Bhajans and Keertans. Shiv Bhajan records would begin to be played on Loudspeakers from the previous day onwards .I remember all this even today.

Besides being the God of destruction, Shiva is also the God of Yoga and Arts like dancing. That is why in every Indian style dancing school, you will find the Natraj idol displayed prominently. Lord Shiva had two distinctly opposite images. One as the God living in Shmashan (cremation ground), having a battalion of Shiv-Gans, and having a fearful appearance as the God of Destruction. The other appearance of Lord Shiva is like a proper married householder, with wife Parvati and two sons-Kartikeya and Ganesh. They also had 2 daughters-Ashok Sundari and Mansa Devi. This is mentioned in some Puranas.

The story of the film Jai Mahadev-1955 was that the Rakshas Tarkasur was creating havoc in the world of mortals by torturing them. He was invincible, and could only be killed by Lord Shiva’s son. The problem was Shiva was a bachelor and always busy in sadhana on Kailash parwat. Unless he got married and had a child this was not possible. Gods decided to send the God of Love-Kamdev to entice Shiva and make him marry Parvati, who was eager to get married to Shiva.

Kamdev cast his spell on Shiva and broke his sadhana. Shiva was so angry that he opened his third eye and burnt Kamdev into ashes. This was terrible. The whole universe was now without love. Kamdev’s wife Rati and other Gods were much grieved and started pleasing Shiva. Finally Shiva opened his eyes and blessed Rati that her husband will forever be within every living soul, but she wanted Kamdev alive for her. So Shiva gave a boon that in Dwapar yug, they will unite physically. Shiva also married Parvati and they had a son Kartikeya who killed Tarkasur and thus saved the world from his terror.

In the film’s cast, I have mentioned the names of 2 brothers. Have you noticed it ? I am sure 99% of readers will not know who the brothers were ! OK, no more surprises. DAR KASHMIRI (aka Om Prakash Dar) was the elder brother of JEEVAN (aka O.K.Dar or Omkar Nath Dar). I have written a few times about these brothers on this Blog as well as in my book about them in detail.

Manna Dey was the MD. He gave music to 16 Hindi films – 4 films independently and 12 films along with some other MDs. Today’s song is sung by Asha Bhosale and Moti Sagar.

In the Hindi film industry, there are 4 types of people.

The first type is those people, who join this industry, struggle very hard and succeed in fulfilling their dreams, for example Guru Dutt, Mehboob, Johnny Walker, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd.Rafi etc. who are well known to all by now. The second type of people are those who join the industry, struggle very hard ,do not succeed and leave dejected. The third type is those people who have a filmi connection or a strong luck, who join, struggle a bit and succeed, like for example,Raj Kapoor,Dev Anand,Dilip kumar,Rakesh and Rajesh Roshan,Anand Milind,Nanda,Nargis,Meena Kumari etc

And….. the fourth type is those people who join the industry, struggle very hard and succeed partly, but end up doing something else,to keep them sustaining here.
The industry is full of people of the 4th type.People who come with dreams in their eyes, but end up doing something else.People who start as a Hero in 2-3 films, settle
for side roles and finally character roles, like Dev Kumar, Sujit kumar, Jeevan etc.

Not only this but we have examples where they started with something else and ended with a totally different thing and succeeded. For Example,Guru Dutt started as a Choreographer/dance Director (Lakharani-45) and ended up Actor/Director, Ashok kumar started as a Lab Technician in photography but became a great actor and Amiya Chakravarty who started as a Bangla Teacher and a Canteen Manager in Bombay Talkies, for which later he directed finest movies.

In olden days, when the Studio system was there, Artistes used to be employed on a monthly basis and they had to do whatever work was given as per their capability. For example,in Ranjit Studios over 700 people were on the rolls at one time(The Government had to open a Ration shop inside the studio premises for them) from where actors were made out of script writers and the Director wrote songs ! So people joined the industry with a mind prepared to do whatever job, just to succeed in their ambition.

MOTI SAGAR was one such person who came to the industry to become a Hero, but ended up doing sundry roles, singing songs, writing stories and scripts and producing films. He ,however, could not get great success in any of these and ended up being ‘Jack of all trades,Master of None’.

MOTI SAGAR was born in New Delhi on 16-4-1925, but graduated from Lahore. In Lahore he got interested in acting in films. Then he met Inayat Hussain and G.A.Chishti-the composers and he loved singing. He came to Bombay in 1946. His cousins Motilal, Mukesh and Tara Harish were already there in films. Harish and Motilal were established, and Mukesh was trying very hard.

Moti Sagar did a second hero’s role in MALHAR-1951. He sang his first song under Bulo C.Rani in GUL SANOBER-53 with Kalyani. Then came Pamposh, Shikar, Deewali ki raat, Makhichoos, Jai Mahadev, Salgirah, and Prerana. When he stopped getting songs and roles, he switched over to writing. He wrote stories for Badal, Lalkaar, Charas, Ram Bharose. He acted in 13 films. He directed 2 films, namely Prerana-84 and Tanya-94. He wrote songs also for the film Prerana-84. He sang 13 songs in 9 films. When this stopped he produced 2 films Hum Tere Ashiq hai and Badal. So, Moti Sagar was an Actor, Director, Producer, Lyricist, and a Singer.

After 1994, he retired. He died on 14-3-1999. Preeti Sagar is his daughter. She too was a struggling singer.

Enjoy today’s song by Asha and Moti Sagar….
