A R Rahman – The Musician of 21st Century – 10
The sad and pensive songs have about 30% share in all Bollywood songs. Romantic songs will be a little above at 40%. This is a hazardous line of guessing data game. As there are 100% of them, the rest of 30% shall go in which account? They will be the inane, fillers, comic relief, or item numbers. There are less songs now then the golden era, so there is less or everything. Less of meaningless, song fillers, bathroom break type of songs.
Sad songs of ARR are a special breed. Most award winning songs of other musicians are sad songs, not so for ARR. ARR has more dance songs winning accolades. “Jai Ho” in ‘Slumdog Millionaire” is a case in point. I am not sure where to fit “chanda re chanda re”. It is a romantic song with dance/rhythm.
I am posting here a sad song here from the 2015 film “Tamasha”.One song from the film is posted in the blog. I believe I have seen this film in bits and patches, so cannot recall much.
This duet by Alka Yagnik and Arjit Singh is hugely popular among Gen Z. It is heard every now and then, here and there, on FM invariably. Irshad Kaamil is the lyricist, who is a veteran now, for ARR’s made in Hindi only films. The song plays in the background with Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor, meeting up in a pub. Ranbir Kapoor is trying to shake off Deepika, but she is persisting in trying to connect to him on a level.
Alka Yagnik is singing the catchphrase mukhda twice as:
Gar tum saathh ho oo
Agar tum saathh ho
Also, the lines,
meri taraf aataa
har gham phisal jaaye
“Phisal” means “slipped from my hands” or the “grip lost”. Or derails.
meri taraf aataa
har gham phisal jaaye
aankhon mein tum ko bharoon
Meaning: All the ‘gham’ that is looking to find me, slips away, as I my eyes fill with you.
And the word is ‘phisal’ a combination of ‘pa’ and ‘ha’, and not ‘fisal’. Alka Yagnik sings it better the second time round at the end of the song, which is the last line.
Arjit Singh says this in reply;
teri nazron mein hai tere sapne
tere sapnon mein hai naraazi
The word here should be “naraazgi” expressing varied emotions. The opposite of ‘Raazi’, by adding ‘na’ as prefix. Predictably AI has missed this aspect of the word’s construction.
Instead of struggling with all the meanings and connotations in usage, I am going to AI and getting the methodical reply as follows:
The Hindi and Urdu word narazgi (नाराज़गी / ناراضگی) primarily translates to resentment or displeasure in English. It refers to a state of being annoyed, offended, or unhappy with someone’s actions or a particular situation.
Depending on the context, other common English translations include:
Resentment: A feeling of indignation or ill-will at something regarded as a wrong, insult, or injury.
Displeasure: A feeling of annoyance or disapproval.
Indignation: Anger or annoyance provoked by what is perceived as unfair treatment.
Annoyance: The feeling of being slightly angry or impatient.
Sulking: Often used when someone is naraz in a way that involves being silent or withdrawn because they are upset.
Discontentment: A lack of satisfaction or a feeling of mild unhappiness.
Usage Examples
Expressing narazgi: “He expressed his resentment over the decision” (उसने फैसले पर अपनी नाराज़गी जताई).
Removing narazgi: “I met him to remove his resentment” (उसकी नाराज़गी दूर करने के लिए मैं उससे मिला).
