Chanda re chanda re kabhi to zameen par aa

Posted on: September 17, 2012

This article is written by nahm, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

The film Sapnay(1997), was dubbed from a TeleguTamil Film named “minsaara Kanavu”. I found this while looking for information about the story etc. here. I have seen this movie, maybe once or maybe in parts. I remembered a part of the story and songs, which were very melodious. The song “Chanda re chanda re” is a favourite with me for many reasons. First is the melody, which makes it such a hummable song. I especially like the interlude music, which makes Kajol respond and start singing with Prabhu Deva. And the way it is picturized next to an ‘urban pond’ with slum dwellers living around it. And the most important factor of all is Prabhu Deva’s choreography and dance, and the non-serious way he is treating the whole thing. I am guessing Prabhu Deva is the choreographer here, as he is a choreographer first than a dancer, then an actor turned action director to full fledge Film Director, when last heard.

As stated in the summary the movie is about a girl, who wants to join convent to become a nun. As the father tries to make her change her mind, she is exposed to the charms of first Arvind Swamy and than Prabhu Deva. I remember the end of the film, when Kajol joins the convent. Even Prabhu Devaa with whom she has fallen in love, is unable to prevent her.

Remembering this movie’s story has reminded me of a friend of mine. We were together all through junior college. Than my friends family shifted to a distant suburb, and she changed college. We were in touch and within two years she had decided to join the convent. I remember talking to her about her decision because her mother told me that she is not listening to her reasoning. She said that Jesus came in her dream and he is calling her. I could not understand myself how it all changed her so much. Maybe her father’s early death had more effect on her than her mother and brother realised. She used to tell me about her father and how he had drunk himself to death and how her mother had struggled to bring them up on her own.

I had used this line of reasoning with her while asking her to reconsider. I told her to think of her mother, how she will live without her and that she was leaving her mother all alone again. My last meeting with her was when we went to see her at ‘ Asha Sadan’ just before she was to go away. Her mother had told me she would be there for a day, and we can go and meet her at a particular time. I cant recall much about what we spoke and what she said. But I remember her mother crying all the while I was there and she came out to meet us and even after she went back inside. As a think about it all now, all I can hope is that she is at peace with herself and her God.

Coming back to the song, it is asking the Moon to come down to earth, so that we can sit together and talk. Really, if moon were to come down on earth where would it sit or stand or will it just roll down to the sea, like Noddy’s snow ball. If it is full it must sink down to the bottom, or alternately if it was
crescent, it can rest on the surface and a fairy can sit in its curve 🙂 . Like a true dream sequence set from old hindi films.

The singers are Hariharan and Sadhna Sargam. Music is by A. R. Rehman, and lyrics are attributed to Javed Akhtar. And there is a word in the song “ghaar”. I was floored for a while as to how to spell it and what does it mean. At first I thought it was “a Tunnel”. And than the construction came to me and slowly the meaning also became clear. Actually the word means “Cave”.

aajaa sapnon ki neeli nadiyaa mein nahaayen
aa jaayen taare chhup ke ham ghaar banaayen

If it is happening in a dream, kuch bhi ho sakta hai. Stars will come and make a cave for us and we will sit talking with the moon. Sigh.

Lyrics

chanda re chanda re
kabhi to zameen par aa
baithhenge baaten karenge
chanda re chanda re
kabhi to zameen par aa
baithhenge baaten karenge

chanda re chanda re
kabhi to zameen par aa
baithhenge baaten karenge
tujh ko aate idhar
laaj aaye agar
odh ke aa jaa
tu baadal ghane
ae

gulshan gulshan waadi waadi
behti hai resham jaisi hawaa
gulshan gulshan waadi waadi
behti hai resham jaisi hawaa
jungle jungle parvat parvat
hain neend mein sab
ek mere siwaa
chanda aa aa
chanda aa aa
aajaa sapnon ki
neeli nadiyaa mein nahaaye
aa jaayen taare
chhup ke ham ghaar banaayen
in dhundli dhundli raahon mein aa
donon hi kho jaayen

chanda re chanda re
kabhi to zameen par aa
baithhenge baaten karenge
tujh ko aate idhar
laaj aaye agar
odh ke aa jaa
tu baadal ghane
ae ae

chanda se poochhenge ham
saare sawaal niraale
jharne kyun gaate hain
panchhi kyun matwaale

o kyun hai saawan maheena aa
ghataaon kaa
chanda se poochhenge ham
saare sawaal niraale
chandaa aa aa
chandaaa aa
titli ke par kyun
itne rangeen hote hain
jugnu raaton mein jaagen
to kab sotey hain

in dhundli dhundli raahon mein aa
donon hi kho jaayen
aan aa aan aan haan
aan aan aa aaan
aa aan aan aan haa aan aan
aan aa aan
ho oh ho ho
ho oh oh oh ho oh

chanda re chandaa re
kabhi to zameen par aa
baitthenge baaten karenge
tujh ko aate idhar
laaj aaye agar
odh ke aa jaa
tu baadal ghane
ae ae

Beautiful and well picturised song.
There is a shorter version of this song with different lyrics.

Thanks for the link. I had never heard or seen this part of the song.

Lyrics for inclusion in the post :

Hariharan :
hmmmm
main koyi nahin main kuchh bhi nahin
kyun tu ne mujh se pyaar kiyaa
main koyi nahin main kuchh bhi nahin
kyun tu ne mujh se pyaar kiyaa

neenden chheeni jis ne meri
kyun tu ne woh iqraar kiyaa
chandaa aaa
chandaa aaa
kaise samjhaaun
mujh ko hai jo hairaani
teri aankhon mein padh ke yeh
prem kahaani
main aur mera dil
kyun na tere deewane ho jaayen
chanda re chanda re
meri tarah tu bhi kyaa
raaton mein tanhaa jaage

Sadhana Sargam :
chanda yeh to bataa
tujh ko bhi raoz kyaa
jaagte mein bhi
aayen sapney ean
chanda re chanda re
meri tarah tu bhi kyaa
raaton mein tanhaa jaage
chanda yeh to bataa
tujh ko bhi raoz kyaa
jaagte mein bhi
aayen sapney ean

My initial impression was the same that its a Tamil movie dubbed in hindi. But imbd said it was a Telegu movie. So I went with that. Now it turns out that it was made in Tamil, than dubbed in Telegu and hindi. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0274789/

Thanks for the correction.
