Today’s song is the last and final song of the social film Bade Bhaiya-1951.
As seen in the ‘Hindi film Index’ by Hamraz ji, I found that there were at least 25 films having titles of ‘Bada’, ‘Badi’ and ‘Bade’. There was also another film Bade Bhaiya made in 1957. There films like Bada bhai, Badi behen (3 films), Badi Beti, Bada Ghar, Bade nawab, Bade miyan, Bade Saheb, Bade Sarkar, Bade thakur, Badi bahu, Badi baat etc. etc.
The film Bade Bhaiyya-1951 was probably one of the last films in which actor Agha was the Hero. The film was made by Super Pictures, Bombay. The owner of the banner- Aspi Irani was also the director of this film. The music was by Premnath ( Wadhwan), who was a member of the ‘Same Name Confusion’ pair with actor Premnath (Malhotra). Looking at the persona of actor Premnath, it was strange how so many people thought that he also gave music. Of course actor Premnath actually had received a regular training in classical music from Ustad Jagannath Prasad. He had also sung 2 songs in Hindi films, Rangbhoomi-1946 and Chand Sitare- 1948. However, he stopped singing after that.
Premnath Wadhwan, the Music Director was born on 5-7-1918 in Gujranwala,Punjab. He learnt music from experts in Amritsar,Multan and Lahore. He acted in films like Shahr-e-khamoshi and also sang in Sohni Mahiwal-1938.
After marriage,he moved to Bombay. His first film as a Music Director was Rangbhoomi-1946. In this film ,a novice Mohd. Rafi sang many songs for him. His other films were Dharti-47,Chandrahas-47,Sagar’s Pehla pyar-47. He then gave music to a film ” Chand sitare”-48 under the banner of Ravindra Art productions. Mukesh,Lata and Geeta Roy sang in it. In the film ‘Alakh Niranjan’-50,he used Mohd. Faruqi, Sulochana kadam and Rajkumari.
Premnath gave music to many films of Super pictures of Aspy Irani like Bade Bhaiya-51 and Maya Machhindra-51, in which Surendra, Geeta,Rafi and Shamshad sang. His another film ‘Qatil kaun’ in late 50s was not released. For this film, Rafi, Asha, Manna Dey, Mubarak Begum and Shamshad had given songs.
His films diminished. Sati Vaishalini-59,Main hoon Jadugar-65 and Tarzan in Fairyland-68 were his last films.
After he stopped work as MD,he devoted his time for the welfare of Cine Artists as a trade union leader. As a Secretary,he served the Music Directors’ Assn. for 30 years.
He died on 27-4-1993 at the age of 75 years.
I find that many people mistakenly credit actor Premnath as a MD for his films. Some sites include these films in the filmography of actor Premnath. It is now clear that actor Premnath and MD Premnath were 2 different persons.
Film Bade Bhaiya-1951 cast included Nirupa Roy, Suresh, Agha, Husn Banu, Naaz, Minoo, Nazir kashmiri, Yakub, habib etc. The special feature of this film was that this was the last film of Agha as a Hero and in this film, you can see Nirupa Roy singing a qawwali in the traditional dress !. The story of the film was….
Astrological predictions sometimes do come out to be true as it happened in the case of Bankey( Suresh) and Bansi ( Agha), two small kids, about whom the Astrologer foretold that they will feed thousands of hungry souls when they grow up. As they grew up they found themselves employed in a restaurant serving food to thousands of people daily. They however could not stick to their jobs for long, due to their virtue of being too honest. Bade Bhaiya and Chhote Bhaiya, as they fondly called each other, got jobs in a touring carnival little knowing what hazards the fate had in store for them.
However Bade Bhaiya, through sheer strength of his will, used to infuse such a high degree of confidence in Chote Bhaiya that Chote Bhaiya managed to perform most dangerous feats such as MotorCycle jump, Dare devil ride on motor bike in well of death & plunging into a fire tank from a height of 100 ft. They became the heroes of the carnival very soon but they lost no time in losing their hearts as well. Bade Bhaiya -Agha- fell for Madhuri-Nirupa Roy- the beautiful daughter of the carnival owner and Chhote Bhaiya went mad after another Carnival girl named Bijli-Husn banu.
While the two heroes were trying to win over the love of their respective sweethearts another drama was being enacted between a Jagirdar and his son Manohar( Yaqub), not very far off. The father insisted that the son should marry Lalita-Naaz-, an orphan, brought up by himself, while Manohar, the son, having little belief in marriages refused to accede to his father’s wishes and left his abode and got himself employed as motor driver, to Madhuri. His good looks and his talent as a conversationalist won him a soft corner in Madhuri’s heart. Finally,in spite of the machinations of Manohar, Madhuri realises her love for Bansi and Manohar goes back to marry Lalita. Bankey and Bijli too are united.
You will find one name Husn Banu in the film’s cast. She was the wife of the film’s director- Aspi Irani and the daughter of yesteryear actress Shareefa. Roshan Ara aka Husn Banu was born in Singapore on 8-2-1919. She was born to actress Shareefa and a Parsee Magician Minu Cooper ( the actor / singer Minu the Mystiq was different ). She was very beautiful. She started her career in Calcutta ( just like her mother), by working in New Theatre’s film “Daku Mansoor-34″. After a few more films, her mother, Shareefa brought her to Bombay and she started getting roles in Wadia films. She was working only in C grade stunt action films. After 1940, she got 2 social films made by Bharat Laxmi films and in 1941 again 1 film each from Bhavnani productions and National studios. However she got only small or side roles.
In 1941, When she was selected for Ranjit’s film Dhandora as a Heroine, this was a new experience for her as she had never worked in a social or a comedy movie as a Heroine. All her experience was for stunt films only. Husn Bano acted in 53 films and sang 44 songs in 16 films. She had married Wadia’s director Aspy Irani. Husn Bano worked in films till her last film Akhari Sajda-1977 and then she retired. She had a big house ‘Shareefa Manzil” in Dadar, Bombay. On 23-11-1986, her husband Aspy Irani left home for work and he simply disappeared. He was never found and was declared as a “Missing Person” by the Police.
Husn Banu was beautiful. She was featured in a Lux Soap advertisement in the early 40s. Leela Chitnis was the first to feature in this Ad during early 1940. After that Azuri, Bharati Devi, Manorama, Ratanbai, Shobhana Samarth, Mumtaz Shanti, Neena, Sadhona Bose and Maya Banerjee had also featured in these ads. (Thanks to the book Stages of Life by Kathryn Hansen).
Here is the last and final song from the film Bade Bhaiya-1951. With this song, all the songs of this film are covered and the film is YIPPEED. The song is sung by Asha Bhosle. Enjoy……
