‘Shaarda’ (1981) was produced by K K Talwar and was directed by Lekh Tandon. The cast included Jeetendra, Rameshwari, Usha Kiran, Om Prakash, Deena Pathak, Kalpana Iyer, Madan Puri, Jagdeep, Iftekhar, Pinchoo Kapoor etc. Sarika and Raj Babbar made guest appearances. The story of the film seems to be partly inspired from a Hollywood film, ‘How To Murder Your Wife’ (1965). While the Hollywood film was a black comedy, Lekh Tandon converted his Hindi film into a family drama. The shooting of the film started in 1978. The film got released on April 10, 1981.

It was Rameshwari’s first film with Jeetendra in lead roles. Earlier, she had worked with Jeetendra in ‘Asha’ (1980) but in the role of his non-glamourous wife. Reena Roy played the title role. During the making of ‘Shaarda’ (1981), Jeetendra was impressed by Rameshwari’s performance. He recommended her names to some film producers but she rejected all of them on the ground that the roles did not impress her. It is said that Jeetendra told her that too much selective in accepting the films may harm her career. Of course, Rameshwari’s career was affected but for the different reasons. While shooting for the film, ‘Sunayana’, her left eye was injured requiring treatments abroad. Sometime in the mid-1980s, Rameshwari got married to her classmate in FTII, Deepak Seth, producer and actor of Punjabi films. She had taken the sabbatical from the film industry to raise her family of two sons. After 2000, Rameshwari has occasionally made her presence in Hindi films and TV serials.

The story of the film is as under:

Inderjeet Malhotra has been brought up by his widowed mother (Usha Kiran), under adverse circumstances and made all her efforts to educate him. As a result, he has completed MBA and now he is working in a multi-national company as a senior executive with his secretary, Jagdeep (Jagdeep). He stays in a luxurious flat with high range car. Inderjeet is strongly devoted to his mother and is god-fearing. He will not do anything which is painful for his mother.

Since Inderjeet’s joining the company, its sales targets have significantly exceeded. The company’s MD, Kohli (Madan Puri) announces Inderjeet’s promotion as Sales Director who is also planning to get his daughter Anita (Sarika) married to him. In the meanwhile, in the conference of company’s product distributors, Inderjeet is forced to drink alcohal by his colleagues. Under the influence of the drink, and with the sad story of an orphan girl, Sharda (Rameshwari) who had come to entertain the delegates, Inderjeet gets married to her under the Vedic rites. As a precaution, Sharda’s friend has taken the marriage certificate from the priest.

In Mumbai, Kohli pays a visit to Inderjit’s house and meets his mother with a marriage proposal of his daughter, Anita. Inderjeet’s mother is very happy to accept the proposal and telephones to Inderjeet about his marriage proposal. He wakes up half asleep and agrees for the marriage without remembering that he has already got married to Sharda last night who is sleeping by his side. Being a principled man, Inderjeet does not want to discard Sharda but wants a solution to the problem because he knows that his conservative mother will not agree with his marriage and her response may be extreme including risk to her life.

Inderjeet decides that until he can convince his mother, he will put Sharda in a separate accommodation in Pune. Sharda agrees and shifts to Pune. In her neighbouring flat, a childless old couples (Om Prakash and Deena Pathak) live. Sharda becomes friendly with them and they treat her as their own daughter. She gets trained in cooking and other customs and traditions which are expected from her when she shifts to her mother-in-law’s house.

In Mumbai, Kohli has arranged a party during which he announces the engagement of his daughter, Anita with Inderjeet who gives a shocked reaction. Now, he has to think how to wriggle out of situation. His secretary, Jagdeep suggests to get Sharda eliminated and Inderjeet, in order to avoid the wrath of his mother, is prepared to do the extreme things including killing Sharda in connivance with Jagdeep. Jagdeep plans her murder to be executed by Inderjeet, by food poisoning on one occasion to pushing her from the hill top during the horse riding. But on each occasion, because of his kind-hearted nature, Inderjeet saves Sharda from the murder.

In his next visit to Pune, Inderjeet reveals Sharda that his mother has agreed to get him married to Anita and he is now in a big problem. He reveals her that he has tried to convince his mother about his marriage with her (Sharda) in an indirect way but his mother became hysterical. Sharda tells him that he had done all that was necessary to make her acceptable to his mother but the destiny was something else. She tells him to follow his mother’s dictate and get married to Anita.

After saying this, Sharda runs out of her room to go away from Inderjeet’s life. On the way, she meets with a car accident. Inderjeet, who was following her, admits her in the hospital where he gets the news that Sharda is pregnant. She assures Inderjeet that now she has a reason to stay alive and she will not do anything to her life. She tells Inderjeet to go back to Mumbai. After discharge from the hospital, Sharda leaves Pune and settle down in Rishikesh. She delivers a baby boy.

Inderjeet has been impressed with Sharda’s docile and accommodative nature. He decides to break his engagement to Anita and to reveal to his mother the entire truth about his marriage to Sharda. After his return to Mumbai, he meets his MD, Kohli and tells him that he is resigning from his job as does not want to marry Anita. But Kohli, unexpectedly show his happiness for rejecting Anita as he has come to know that Anita is in love with another man (Raj Babbar) and he was in a piquant situation how to break this news to him. He thanks Inderjeet for saving him from an awkward situation. There is no need for him to leave the job.

Inderjeet now reveals his mother the true events of his marriage with Sharda with the news of her pregnancy. His mother gets the shock and becomes unconscious. She is admitted in a hospital where she recovers. But before released from the hospital, she escapes from the hospital and lands in Rishikesh. It so happens that she gets shelter’s in Sharda’s house. Sharda recognises her because she has seen her photo with Inderjeet. But Inderjeet’s mother has not seen her. Sharda does not reveal her identity and she has introduced herself as Durga.

During the stay in Haridwar, Inderjeet’s mother develops affinity towards Sharda and her infant son. During their conversations, Sharda comes to know that Inderjeet’s mother still has a very negative image of Sharda. Under the circumstances, Sharda write a letter to Inderjeet informing him that his mother is staying with her. She gels well with her as Durga but has a strong dislike for Sharda). In the circumstances, it is better for her to go away from this world. With this letter, though Inderjeet is happy about finding her missing mother but is worried about Sharda’s life.

Inderjeet rushes to Rishikesh and finds his mother in a hut with the infant boy. He asks for the whereabouts of Sharda. She replies that there is no Sharda but Durga with whom she has been staying. She has gone towards Laxman Jhoola side. Inderjeet rushes out and his mother follows him. He finds Sharda jumping from Laxman Jhoola into the River Ganga. Inderjeet jumps and saves her from drowning. Sharda’s identity is revealed to Inderjeet’s mother. Having stayed with her and knowing her pleasing nature, honesty and family-oriented views, Inderjeet’s mother accepts Sharda as her daughter-in-law.

The film had five songs written by Anand Bakshi which were set to music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Two songs have been represented on the Blog. I present the 3rd song, a poignant one, ‘aa main tujhko pyaar karoon’ rendered by Asha Bhosle and picturised on Rameshwari in Rishikesh. The video clip is preceded by an invocation by Manna Dey followed by Asha Bhosle solo while the audio clip contains only Asha Bhosle solo with an additional antara. During Manna Dey’s invocational rendition, scenes of River Ganga at Devprayag, Har-ki-Paudi, in Haridwar and Rishikesh run in the background.

The background to the song is that the pregnant Sharda (Rameshwari) has run away to Rishikesh so that her husband, Inderjeet (Jeetendra) can marry the girl of his mother’s choice. Inderjeet on the other hand for the first time revealed to his mother that he had secretly married Sharda and has been living with her. He says that he cannot marry the girl of her choice now. In Rishikesh, Sharda is blessed with a baby boy. Inderjeet’s mother has also left her house out of frustration without informing Inderjeet and landed in Rishikesh. Unknowingly, she has taken the shelter in Sharda’s house to whom she had never met earlier. Sharda is in a piquant situation as she cannot reveal her true identity because the mother-in-law hates her. So, she writes a letter to Inderjeet that under the circumstances, she does not want to live anymore. And the song follows.
