Today’s song is from an obscure social film – Teen Bhai-1955.

The film was made by D.P.Productions, Bombay. It was directed by one of the veterans from New Theatres, Calcutta, Hemchander Chunder (1907 – 1960). He was a producer and director. He made his film debut in 1931 as an actor with BN Sircar’s short-lived film company International Filmcraft in Prafulla Roy’s Chasher Meye , and made his directorial debut in 1935, co-directing with Premankur Atorthy .

Chunder was the principal Hindi film director at New Theaters from 1935 to 1948 in an attempt to break into the Western India market. His second directorial work Karodpati (1936) is among the best-known musicals starring actor and singer Kundan Lal Saigal . With Anath Ashram (1937), Chunder managed one of the most successful film adaptations of Bengali literature in Hindi films of the 1930s. The author Sailajananda Mukherjee also starred along with Prithviraj Kapoor. Along with the actress Meera Mishra, Hemchandra Chunder founded the film company “HM Prod.” in the late 1940s and was an independent producer of his films.

The Music Director was Arunkumar Mukherjee. He is a case in point how in those days people were attracted towards this film industry. Arunkumar Mukherjee was born on 14-2-1912 at Calcutta. He was a maternal cousin( their mothers were sisters) of actor Ashok kumar. Arunkumar, after his education, started a prospering business in Nagpur. Enamoured by the All India fame of Ashok Kumar ,he too aspired to join films. He was a good singer anyway. Finally, Ashok Kumar got him a job in Bombay Talkies as a singer on a salary of Rs. 60/- p.m.

His first song in Nirmala-38 was a hit but he got a good name only after his songs in Bandhan-40 got very famous, particularly the song “Chana jor garam’. He sang in Kangan, Bandhan, Azaad, Punarmilan, Jhoola, Anjaan, Naya Sansar etc etc. His song-Dheere dheere aa re badal, main to Dilli se dulhan laya re, naacho naacho pyare etc became very popular. He sang about 67 songs in 31 films.

As a Music Director, he gave music in Pratima-45, Hatimtai-47, Shamsheer-53, Parineeta-53, Samaaj-54 and Teen Bhai-55

He had also acted in 9 films – Kangan-39, Bandhan-040, Azad-40, Naya Sansar-41, Beti-41, Anjaan-43, Jwar Bhata-44, Hamari baat-49 and Mashal-50.

His death was very tragic. He was returning from a trial show of ‘Bandish’ along with cousin Ashok Kumar in his car. All of a sudden, he got a massive heart attack and he died instantly on the lap of the man who had brought him to the films in Bombay-Ashok Kumar. The date was 6-12-1955. He was only 43 year old at that time.

The cast of the film was Nirupa Roy, Shyama, Bharat Bhushan, Pahadi Sanyal, Heeralal, Nazir Hussain, Gulab, Leela Mishra, Colin Pal, Madan Puri and many others. The strange name in this cast is Colin Pal.

Colin Pal (25 December 1923 – 30 August 2005) was a Hindi film actor, technician, journalist, and publicist for 175 Hindi films. He is the son of producer Niranjan Pal and the grandson of Indian independence movement activist Bipin Chandra Pal. Pal was born in London to an English mother, Lily Bell, and spent his early years in Wembley, before moving to Bombay in 1929.

Colin Pal joined Filmistan Studios in May 1943 as an apprentice after working alongside his father at Bombay Talkies. He became the assistant director to P.L. Santoshi. While working with Filmistan he also acted as Netaji Subashchandra Bose in Samadhi in 1949. In 1951 he appeared in Bimal Roy’s Parineeta-1953 and Naukri-1954 and in Teen Bhai-1955. He later directed Suhag Sindoor-1953 for Munshi productions.

Pal spent most of his career as a publicist for mainstream Hindi films, but also wrote for a number of trade magazines. He frequently collaborated with film historians on projects around the early talkie studios in Bombay. He contributed to the historical discussion on the use of simple Hindustani in early Hindi cinema instead of the more literary language, which is common in other vernacular cinema including Tamil and Bengali.

He authored the book Shooting Stars which described the eccentricities of the cinema process. His re-authoring of his father’s autobiography Aye Jibon: Such is life won a National Award from the Indian Government in 2001.

Pal died on 28 August 2005 after a prolonged illness in Mumbai at the age of 83. His son, Deep Pal was a pioneer of Steadicam camerawork in India.

The year 1955 was one of the important years of the ” Golden Era “. Though most of the films of the Golden Era were entertainers, Musicals and Popular, but as is in any other case there were many films in each year of this decade, which were obscure or average. This, however, did not harm the decade or any of the year in it. Actually, these ordinary films enhanced the value of the musical films. Today’s film Teen Bhai-1955 was one such obscure, average film. Here are a few such films of 1955, for example….Adamkhor, Bakul (last film of New Theatres, Calcutta, before it closed down), Bindiya, Chhabila, Chhora Chhori, Darbar, Deewar, Ghamand, Haseena, Inaam, Jasoos, Jashan, Kanchan, Lutera, Mano ya na mano etc etc.

The year 1955 gave us some really meaningful and entertaining films. Raj Kapoor’s ‘Shri 420’ tried to bring in limelight, as usual, the hypocrisy of elite society. It was a great film with a message, good direction and everlasting music by Shankar-Jaikishan, the three specialities of an RK film. From this film onwards, “Raju” became the favourite name of Raj Kapoor’s Heroes.( Like ‘Shanker’ was Shammi Kapoor’s lucky name in early films. Similarly ‘Vijay’ was the favourite film name of Amitabh Bachhan in 20 films, of Jeetendra in 18 films and of Mithun Chakravarti in 16 films.).

Guru Dutt’s film Mr.and Mrs.55 was perhaps his last light comedy movie, which has peppy music by O P Nayyar. Later he made serious films like Pyaasa-57, Kagaz ke phool-59 and Sahib, Bibi aur Ghulam-62, for which he will be known forever. Sunil Dutt made his Debut with Railway Platform. V.Shantaram’s Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje was an example of how an art film devoted to Dance can also become a commercial success. The film being in color also helped. Seema and Devdas were serious films. Pather Panchali hit the Indian screens. Azaad, Insaniyat, Munimji, Udan Khatola and Baradari were entertainers with very good music.

Children’s film society was established in 1955. Shammi Kapoor and Geeta Bali got married. New Theatres of Calcutta made its last film Bakul and downed its shutters forever.

The story of the film Teen Bhai-1955 was…..

I have seen this film. It had a “beaten track” story of a wayward young man.Mahesh,Suresh and Naresh are staying together.Suresh(Bharat Bhushan),though married, falls in love with a dancer Champa(Shyama). He spends lot of money on her and even tries to fix younger brother Naresh’s marriage with a Barrister’s daughter(to get a Bakhshish in form of Dowry).Naresh is already in love with their tennant’s daughter Krishna. There is a fight among all brothers, they separate and finally unite after a happy ending culminating in a group photo.

Here is a song from this film sung by Geeta Dutt. Enjoy this typical 50’s song….
