Pancham’s Music – Eighties-to-Nineties (1981-1994…) Duets-11
Today’s duet composition by Rahul Dev Burman is from the 1993 movie ‘Aaja Meri Jaan’. This movie was directed by Ketan Anand for ‘Gulshan Kumar’s ‘Super Cassette Industries’. Gulshan Kumar was the producer of this movie which introduced his younger brother Krishan Kumar. Actress Tanya Singh (daughter of musician Ajit Singh) made her debut in this movie and Krishan Kumar got married to her later.
The movie had Krishan Kumar, Tanya Singh, Shammi Kapoor, Prem Chopra, Pran, Deven Verma, Poonam Dasgupta, Manohar Singh, Satish Shah, Rakesh Bedi, Girish Malik, Sunil Lahiri, Virendra Razdan, Shiva Sagar, Govind Namdeo, Durga Jasraj, Shabnam, Malvika Arora, Neelima, Viju Khote, Vijay Kashyap, Johar, Arun Bali, Nasir Shaikh, Dinesh Balraj, Vijay Korde, Ritesh Pandey, Purnendu Shekhar, Ghanshyam, Karishma, Rajendra, Rohit K., Hashim Khan, Jaypee Barot and others. This movie was passed by the Censor Board on 17.09.1993.
Story of this movie ‘Aaja Meri Jaan-1993’ was written by Pawan Sethi. Like the long lists of names in the cast, this film has a long list of songs. Not six or seven but it had total eighteen songs as per sources on internet. I guess that this movie must be a forgotten movie as I have no recollections of reading about it or listening to any of its songs before I sat down to prepare this post.
Lyrics of this movie were contributed by Kulwant Jani, Maya Govind, Naqsh Lyallpuri, Rani Malik, Ravinder Rawal, Yogesh Gaud, Faiz Anwar Qureshi, Dilip Tahir, Manohar Iyer and Sameer. Music composition was by Amar-Utpal, Nikhil-Vinay, Milind Sagar and R.D. Burman.
Out of the eighteen songs of this movie, only ONE song was composed by R.D. Burman. This song, the title song of the movie is the song that we are going to listen today.
In the trivia for this movie sources on internet mention that R.D. Burman had recorded this song for a non-film album but later the album was shelved and this song was used for this movie’s promotion. Sources also mention about the various foreign tracks that inspired the prelude music and mukhdaa of this song, and how Pancham Da used the tune of this song for a Bengali Non-Film album and for a couple of instrumental tracks in movies like ‘Saagar-1985’ & ‘Heeralal Pannalal-1978’etc. However, I am not interested in these details and so I have not given those details here.
Now, let us listen to this song which is sung by S.P. Balasubramaniam and Anuradha Paudwal. Only audio of this song is available. Sameer is the lyricist of this R.D. Burman composition.
