I present the song, ‘main boondan bheeji saaree’ rendered by Sadhana Sargam from Episode-40 of the TV Serial, ‘Mahabharat’ (1988) which covers the story of ‘Subhadra Haran’. The song is written by Pandit Narendra Sharma and is set to music by Rajkamal. The song is picturised on Aloka Mukherjee in the role of Subhadra.
Arjun is on ‘Varnavrat’, a self-imposed pilgrimage as a penance during which he travels to all parts of the country. In Hastinapur, Shakuni (Gufi Paintal), the maternal uncle of Duryodhan (Puneet Issar) is worried as to what could be the purpose of Arjun ending his ‘Varnavrat’ in Dwarka. He fears that it could be the handiwork of Krishna to put the pressure on Hastinapur, now under Duryodhan. In his view, when the other side is strong, one should develop the family relationship with that side. So, he suggests to Duryodhan to get married to Subhadra, Vasudev’s daughter and Krishna’s sister so that family relationship will prevent Krishna from fighting against Hastinapur. Duryodhan asks Balram for his sister, Subhadra’s hand for the marriage with him. Balram, being over confident, assures him that neither his father nor Krishna would go against his wishes and he will arrange Subhadra’s marriage with him after consulting them.
Subhadra (Aloka Mukherjee), impressed with Arjun’s reputation as a great warrior, has already made up her mind to marry Arjun without meeting him. During the last part of his ‘Varnavrat’, Arjun, disguised as a hermit, has already reached Dwarka and is staying with Krishna. One day, Arjun watches Subhadra enjoying the rains with her companions in the courtyard. He falls in love with Subhadra.
In the meanwhile, Krishna comes to know that Balram has committed to Duryodhan to get Subhadra married to him. While he does not oppose the marriage proposal openly but gives a hint that there are other ‘Chandravanshi’ princes also who are interested in marrying Subhadra. Krishna knew that Arjun was also interested in marrying Subhadra.
The song under discussion is in two parts. The immediate context of the Part-1 of the song is that while Subhadra is enjoying getting drenched in Saawan rains with her friends by singing and dancing, Arjun, disguised as hermit, who is on his last lap of ‘Varnavrat’ in Dwarka, accidentally watches Subhadra dancing in the rains from a distance. He falls in love with her. The song abruptly ends when Arjun comes close to Subhadra who does not know his identity and assumes him to be a hermit. Krishna appears on the scene and introduces Arjun to her.
The context for Part-2 of the song is that after knowing the minds of Subhadra and Arjun about the liking for each other, Krishna suggests to Arjun to elope with Subhadra when she visits the temple on the occasion of the festival of Raivataka mountain near Dwarka the next day. He also suggests to Arjun to take his chariot and while eloping, let Subhadra drive the chariot because it is her journey. With the blessing of Krishna, Subhadra starts imagining her pre-wedding rituals in Part-2 of the song. Eventually, Arjun elopes with Subhadra when she takes the support of his hand to climb on the chariot.
The tune of the song is based on Raag Megh.
