Hullo Atuldom
Syed Emraan Anwar Hashmi (known simply as Emraan Hashmi in the entertainment industry) was born in Mumbai to Anwar Hashmi who was essentially a businessman who had acted in “Baharon Ki Manzil” (1969) as the character that Farida Jalal’s character is supposed to marry (found this bit of information on the internet). Emraan Hashmi’s paternal grandmother was the yesteryear actress Meherbhano Mohammad Ali who was popular as Purnima, whose last released film came in the late 1990s. Purnima’s father (a Tamil Brahmin), was supposed to have been an accountant in the office of film distributor Kikubhai Dessai. Emraan Hashmi’s grand aunt was the mother of filmmakers Mahesh Bhatt & Mukesh Bhatt.
I have written all of the above to show that Emraan has a family that is deep-rooted in the film industry.
I must admit that I am not a fan of Emraan Hashmi. I have not seen many of his films; barely three or four- ‘The Dirty Picture’ (2011), ‘Once upon a time in Mumbaai’ (2010), ‘Murder’ (2004), ‘Kalyug’ (2005), ‘Selfiee’ (2023) …… hey! that is more than three or four. I didn’t realise that I have seen so many films starring this actor. Of course not in the order the films released.
I cannot find fault in his acting whether he played the obsessive lover in ‘Murder’, or the character of a director who loves his art in ‘The Dirty Picture’ etc. Recently I saw him in a web series on Netfilx- ‘Taskaree: the Smuggler’s Web’ & thought that he was not such a bad actor (my feeling, don’t know if others feel the same) and that the epithet of the serial kisser that he acquired post ‘Murder’ in 2004 was because of the character he played; almost like the tag of angry youngman that Amitabh Bachchan carried for a long time in spite of playing a comic or romantic in subsequent films or Dharmendra’s he-man tag or Jeetendra’s jumping jack… oh the list can go on. We have a habit of tagging actors. 🙂
24th March is Emraan Hashmi’s birthday and I propose to wish him a lot of health & happiness with a song featuring him with Prachi Desai from the movie “Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai” (2010).
“Once Upon a Time In Mumbaai” was produced by Ekta Kapoor, written by Rajat Arora & directed by Milan Luthria. It had Kangana Ranaut, Ajay Devgan, Randeep Hooda playing pivotal characters alongside Emraan Hashmi & Prachi Desai (I think this was her debut in films, prior to this we had seen her in a few television serials). Avtaar Gill, Prithvi Zutshi & Gauahar Khan were the other known faces among the sea of character actors. The film was set in the Bombay of the 1970s when there were a lot of ganglords & gang-fights in Bombay (as Mumbai used to be called). The story of the film was supposed to be based on the lives of Haji Mastaan & Dawood Ibrahim & how one’s downfall coincided with the other’s growth in the Mumbai underworld.
“Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai” had music by Pritam Chakraborthy with Amitabh Bhattacharya, Neelesh Misra & Irshad Kamil being the lyricists. The songs of the film were in the voices of Mohit Chauhan, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Tulsi Kumar, Karthik, Sunidhi Chauhan, Rana Mazumder, Mika Singh, KK & Dominic Cerejo.
Today’s romantic song is in the voice of Mohit Chauhan & written by Irshad Kamil. I saw some unique credits in the film’s album- the singers who gave voice to the alaap have been given credit as also the chorus singers. I have read that Rakesh Pandit, Sabri Bros, Irfan & Arshad were the voices behind the alaaps as well as the qawwali; from this I am deducing that the alaap in this song should be by Rakesh Pandit about whom I discovered that he is the son of the great classical artiste Shri. Shambhu Pandit of the renowned Qawwali Duo in Music Industry as “Shanker Shambhu”. Rakesh Pandit has been active in the industry for close to 37 years having started singing alongside his father from a very young age.
I have particularly chosen the song for the locations that it was shot in & the costumes Prachi wears.
