TV serial Song number 7:
I present the song, ‘manwaa madhur madhur kachhu bol’ rendered by Sadhana Sargam and Rajkamal from Episode-57 of TV Serial, ‘Mahabharat’ (1988). The song is written by Pandit Narendra Sharma and is set to music by Rajkamal. The song is picturised on Varsha Usgaonkar in the role of Uttara while her music and dance teacher is Arjun (Feroz Khan) who has disguised himself as Brihannala, the eunuch. The song is based on Raag Bhimpalashi, the same Raag on which the song, beena madhur madhur kachhu bol from the film, ‘Ram Rajya’ (1943) was composed.
The background to the dance song under discussion is that after completion of 12 years of exile in the forest, Pandavas are required to spend one year of ‘agyatvas’ (anonymity). Before that Arjun has gone to Indralok to get some effective weapons from there to get ready to fight with Kauravas after the expiry of Pandava’s exile. In Indralok, Urvashi sees Arjuna and falls in love with him. However, Arjun sees her more like a mother, which makes Urvashi furious. In fits of anger, she gives him a curse that he would remain eunuch throughout his life. However, Lord Indra intervenes and Urvashi reduces her curse to one year to Arjun as eunuch. Lord Indra tells Arjun that this one year of curse would help him during his one year of anonymity. After getting trained in music and dances, Arjun returns to earth.
After a lot of deliberations among the five brothers, Pandavas have decided to spend one year of anonymity in the Matsya kingdom whose King Virat is not only powerful, he is friendly with Pandavas. So, they individually get employment in King Virat’s palace. Yudhister joins as a courtier in the court of King Virat, Bheem taking the name, Vallabh and becomes the chief cook. Arjun introduces himself as Brihannala and becomes the music and dance teacher to Prince Uttara. Nakul becomes the in-charge of horse stables and Sahadev, a cowherd. Draupadi assumes the name of Sairandhri and becomes the personal beautician to Queen Sudeshna.
The immediate context of the song is that Brihannala (Firoz Khan) has started teaching singing and dancing to Prince Uttara (Varsha Usgaonkar). One day, while Uttara was learning dance from Brihannala, King Virat (Ashok Sharma) and Queen Sudeshna (Chandni Sharma) join them and wish to see the dance performance of their daughter, Uttara just to see how far she has progressed in learning the dance. This dance song starts while Brihannala plays dholak and in-between he sings dholak’s rhythmic syllables. I have a feeling that the dance performance has incorporated both Kathak and Bharatanatyam styles.
Varsha Usgaonkar, being a trained Kathak dancer, has given an excellent dance performance. A style icon in Marathi films, Varsha Usgaonkar has dominated the Marathi films as a leading lady during 1980s and 90s, most of which were box office hits. She has also worked in about 30 Hindi films, both in the lead roles as well as in the supporting roles but could not replicate her success of Marathi films in her Hindi film career.
Varsha Usgaonkar was born on 28 February 1968 into a Gaud Saraswat Brahmin family in Usgaon village in Ponda, Goa to Achyut Sinai-Usgaonkar, a prominent politician, and Manik Usgaonkar, a classical singer. Her father was a senior leader of a political party and served as a cabinet minister in the Government of Goa, Daman and Diu during 1967 and 1971-72. Influenced by her mother, Varsha Usgaonkar developed an early interest in classical music and was trained in Kathak dance during her childhood. She started her acting career from Marathi stage. In 1984, her Marathi play, ‘Brahmachari’ became superhit paving her way into Marathi films. Simultaneously, she has also been very active in Marathi and Hindi TV serials. In March 2000, she got into an arranged marriage with Ajay Sharma, the son of the music director, Ravi through family connections. She continues to work in Marathi and Konkani films and plays.
