‘Ek Baar Kaho’ (1980) was produced under the banner of Rajshree Productions and was directed by Lekh Tandon. The cast included Navin Nischol and Shabana Azmi in lead roles with Dilip Dhawan and Kiran Vairale in the second lead roles. The supporting cast included Madan Puri, Anil Kapoor, Rajendranath, Jagdeep, Hari Shivdasani, Arvind Deshpande, Shivraj, Rajan Kapoor, Colonel Kapoor, Avtar Gill, Ratan Gurung etc.
The film is a romantic social drama about a wealthy widower and a girl who is a college professor. They like each other but are afraid to express their feelings to each other. The widower is afraid to express his feelings to her because he believes that whoever he loved, he lost them. The girl is hesitant because she has to look after her mentally ill father. The widower is perturbed when the girl failed to meet him after she has given him that assurance. After a couple of years, they meet and the widower comes to know her reason for avoiding him. Incidentally, in this film, while Dilip Dhawan is the second lead actor, Anil Kapoor has a small role.
The story of the film is as under:
Ravi Varma (Navin Nischol) is an wealthy entrepreneur who has lost his loving wife in a car accident. He had earlier lost both his parent. To come out of the grief, Ravi has become a workaholic and a chain smoker. His friend and the personal doctor, Dr. Pinto (Suresh Oberoi) warns about his health due to overwork and the chain smoking and advises him to go on a month’s holiday to Darjeeling where he has his Bungalow. But he rejects his suggestion as the work is more important for him than the relaxation.
From Kolkata, his father-in-law, Dr. Puri (Madan Puri) has been pressurising Ravi to get re-married and on this time, he informs him that he is meeting him in Mumbai with a marriage proposal. To avoid meeting his father-in-law, he changes his mind and decides to go on a holiday in Darjeeling. He accordingly informs his bungalow caretaker, Hanuman Singh (Jagdeep). After a long absence from Ravi, Hanuman Singh has converted his bungalow into a hotel without the owner knowing about it. In the hotel, there is already a college girls’ group led by professor, Aarti Mathur (Shabana Azmi) who have booked all the rooms in the hotel. A trekking group of four boys led by (Anil Kapoor) have pitched their tent near the hotel since they could not get the rooms in the hotel. Aparna (Kiran Vairale) from girls’ group and Amit (Dilip Dhawan) from boys’ group find a common subject of Urdu poetry and get acquainted with each other.
Ravi arrives in Darjeeling by which time, Hanuman has reconverted Ravi’s room into his place of stay. Hanuman Singh has also cautioned the girls’ group that Ravi is eccentric and sometimes he behaves like a mad man just to ensure that if he is exposed, the girls will not believe in Ravi’s words. So, girls are afraid of him when they meet on the dinner table. However, Aarti assures the girls that she will handle him. For Ravi, Hanuman Singh has given him a concocted story that since the girls did not get hotel accommodation, he has accommodated them in his Bungalow.
Ravi often comes across Aarti in the hotel but Aarti keeps a distance from Ravi because Hanuman Singh has told about his madness attack. After a couple of days, Dr. Puri arrives in the hotel to pressurise him to get remarried. Ravi, out of regard to his father-in-law, cannot say him that he is not interested in marriage. So, he escapes out of his room and goes for strolling in a nearby tea gardens and mingles with boys’ group. Dr. Puri meets Aarti and tells her about Ravi after giving his background and the reasons as to why he has been behaving strangely after his wife’s death. He requests Aarti to try to convince Ravi to get married so that he becomes normal human being.
Aarati has taken her botany students to tea plantations tour. She meets Ravi at the tea plantations gardens thus their first one-to-one conversation takes place. She brings out the subject of his marriage which Dr. Puri has been insisting but Ravi declines by saying that he has no interest in getting remarried.
One day Amit and Aparna meets just outside the hotel in the night and Ravi sees them together. She takes leave of Amit by looking at Ravi and saying that the mad man has come. The heated arguments takes place between Ravi and Aparna for latter calling him mad man. In the commotion, Aarti comes out of her room. Seeing her, Aparna requests Ravi to save her from Aarti because she will reprimand her for leaving her room in the night. Ravi obliges by acting like a mad man in front of Aarti. Somehow, she pushes Ravi in a room and locks the door. In that room, Ravi comes to know from the banners and other objects lying in the room that his Bungalow has been converted into hotel by Hanuman Sungh.
Next day, Hanuman Singh’s secrets comes out and speaks out the truth that Ravi is the owner of this Bungalow which he has converted into hotel to earn some money. He has deliberately spread the canard that Ravi is a mad man so that Aarti and her student keep aloof from him and his secrets does not come out in the open. In any case, Aarti has decided to leave the hotel with her students and start their return journey.
After their frequent meetings, Ravi has started liking Aarti. But his past events haunt him from expressing his love for her. He believes that he is jinxed man having lost both his parents and later his wife. He is afraid that the same thing may happen to Aarti if he expresses his love for her. Aarti has also started liking Ravi but she has also some constraint as she has to take care of her mentally ill father who is in the mental hospital.
After completion of the study tour, Aarti and her student depart from the hotel. Both Ravi and Aarti are in sombre mood but refrain from expressing anything to each other. They board the train at the Darjeeling railway station. When the train is in the transit, one of the students see Ravi driving his jeep parallel to the railway track. After crossing the rail track, he requests the driver to stop the train. Aarti gets down from the train and meets Ravi when he gets courage to asks her whether she will marry him. After some hesitation, Aarti assures him that after a week, she will return and meet him to tell him her decision.
After a week, Aarti is travelling to catch the train to Darjeeling in a car. Unfortunately, she is met with an accident and she loses her one leg. She is hospitalised and after some time she is discharged with an artificial foot. On the other hand, Ravi is waiting for her at the Darjeeling railway station but she did not arrive. After few days, he starts believing that it is his jinxed love which may put Aarti in some difficulties. He prays to the almighty that hence forward, he will not shower her with love so that wherever she is, she should be hale and hearty.
One day, Ravi has been requested to inaugurate the school set up by his paper mill company for the children of its employees. During the inaugural function, Ravi sees Aarti sitting in the audience. He comes to know that she is working in the school as teacher. He goes to her residence but comes to know that Aarti has left the job and leaving Darjeeling. Ravi rushes to the railway station and find Aarti sitting on the bench waiting for the train to arrive. Ravi asks her as to why she did not return to meet him as per her assurance. She does not reply as the train has arrived. She tries to board the train but falls. Ravi rushes to pick her up and comes to know as to why she did not come. She is now crippled and she does not want Ravi to be burdened with a crippled wife. The film ends with both hugging each other for the audience to judge whether they get united.
The film’s beginning plot, more or less, matches with that of the story of ‘Come September’ (1961) and the film’s ending parts seems to be adapted from the film ‘An Affair To Remember’ (1957). Director, Lekh Tandon has nicely molded the ideas from the English films to make it a soft romantic drama with equally soft melodramatic impact on the audience to make an happy ending. As I had said in one of my recent articles, Lekh Tandon is the master of handling the emotional and melodramatic scenes which can glue the film audience to their seats.
Navin Nischol and Shabana Azmi have given subtle and restrained performances in line with the demand of the story. For a change, Madan Puri is not a villain but he has a major presence in the film as a facilitator for Ravi to attain his love interest. Jagdeep as a caretaker of the Bungalow/Hotel has also got a major presence in the film. But his comedy becomes too predictable and repetitive. Overall, the film is of a different type of romance genre than the usual Hindi films’ formula-driven romance drama. I consider this film as one of the memorable films released in 1980.
The film had six songs including two multiple version songs written by Mahendra Dehlvi (2), Dev Kohli (2), Kulwant Jani (1) and Maya Govind (1) which were set to music by Bappi Lahiri. One song has been represented on the Blog. I present the second and a two-version song, ‘ek baar kaho mujhe pyaar karte ho’ rendered by Sulakshana Pandit and Bappi Lahiri singing for Kiran Vairale and Dilip Dhawan respectively. The song is written by Dev Kohli. The song appears in the film twice – first at Dilip Dhawan’s initiation and second, Kiran Vairale’s initiation.
The context of the song is that Amit (Dilip Dhawan) loves Aparna (Kiran Vairale) but is afraid to express his feelings directly because he is unemployed. So, one night, he sings alone in the first version of the song to express his feelings for her, which is heard by Aparna and later she joins him. The second version is sung by Aparna after Amit, realising the futility of their love due to his personal problem, straightway tells Aparna that he longer loves her so that she can forget him. The lyrics in the songs make it clears that both are in love with each other. In the last stanza of the second version, the camera focuses on Navin Nischol and Shabana Azmi who are also going through the same phase of their love. The song ends abruptly because Navin Nischol calls Amit and assures him of his financial supports to start his new venture making him financially confident that now he can marry Aparna.
