I don’t remember if I have seen the 1960 movie Love in Simla before. But I have heard many of its songs. And one or two songs have remained with me playing in the background of my head. I had marked this movie in the youtube library some time ago and began seeing it recently. The best part about seeing movies on youtube is they come in segments of 12 minutes. And as I was enjoying myself with the CINDERALLA kind of story this particular song came by and I thought “ hey I know this song” then the next step “is it on Atul?” and on searching I find Atuldom has eight songs from this movie but this one is missing.

During late 1950s, Shashdhar Mukherji and Agha Kashmiri were discussing the next movie of Fimalaya in the formers residence. Shashdhar Mukherji wanted to sign up Shammi Kapoor, but Agha Hashra Kashmiri pointed at the youngster arriving at the home and told Shashdhar Mukherji-“Here is the hero of your movie”. That younster of none other than Joy Mukherji, Shashdhar Mukherji’s son. Shashdhar Mukherji was skeptical but he entrusted the job of grooming Joy Mukherji as a hero on Kashmiri. One of the less common category of songs is what I call “Radio” songs. These are the songs that come out of Radio and people are shown listening to the song in front of their radios. And the hero/ heroine/ other actor is shown singing the song live in the radio station.

“Love in Shimla” (1960), which predates all other “Love in …” movies in Bollwood was the debut movie of Sadhana and Joy Mukherji. And what a superb launch vehicle the two of them had got ! I have not watched the movie, but I have heard and watched a few songs of this movie, and if the songs are any indication, this movie was a great fun movie.

“Love In Shimla” (1960) has a song that is basically a recitation of the Urdu alphabet that goes “Alif Zabar aa alif zer ae alif pesh o” which is sort of like ” A se anaar aa se aam” of Hindi or “A for apple B for Bat…” in English. For one who has studied Urdu, writing down the lyrics of this song would be a cakewalk. I am not familiar with the Urdu alphabet and as a result, the lyrics of this song is Greek (rather Urdu) to me. I had planned to post this song in the past, but I could not do so mostly because I was unable to follow the lyrics.
