Yoon zindagi ke raaste

on:One of the less common category of songs is what I call “Radio” songs. These are the songs that come out of Radio and people are shown listening to the song in front of their radios. And the hero/ heroine/ other actor is shown singing the song live in the radio station.
Here is a “radio” song from “Love in Shimla” (1960). As happens in Bollywood Radio songs, the heroine Sadhana only has to turn on the radio, and hey presto, the radio starts with the song being sung by the Hero, Joy Mukherji. She did not have to tune the radio to get to the right station. In India, there was just one TV chanel in India till 1980s, but there have always been hundreds of radio stations available to a radio listener, right from the time radio sets became available for public use, so tuning a radio to listen to a station was an important part of listening to the radio which could not be taken for granted by any stretch of imagination.
As an expert radio user during the heydays of radio usage in India, I seriously take offence 😀 to this unrealistic picturisation of radio listening, where movie actors do not even have to tune the radio. Tuning a radio set to get to the desired radio station was black magic, and not everyone was capable of that.
Moreover, one needed to have the aerials in the right place to get clear reception. Here in this picturisation, the reception is so crystal clear. Crystal clear reception, when heavy thunder storms are taking place ? Under such conditions, the reception was at its worst and not as depicted in this song.
Well, Bollywood movie watchers are conditioned to suspend their disbelief while watching such picturisations. So, suspend your disbelief and enjoy this radio song from “Love in Shimla” (1960). It is sung by Rafi. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist and Iqbal Qureshi is the music director. One can see Sadhana in the picturisation, listening to this song in her transistor (as a portable radio was called those days).

Lyrics
yoon zindagi ke raaste
sanwaarte chale gaye
sanwaarte chale gaye
qadam-qadam pe ham tumhen
pukaarte chale gaye
pukaarte chale gaye
yoon zindagi ke raaste
sanwaarte chale gaye
sanwaarte chale gaye
qadam-qadam pe ham tumhen
pukaarte chale gaye
pukaarte chale gaye
yoon zindagi ke raaste
jo pyaar mein guzar gayi
wo zindagii thi zindagi
jo pyaar mein guzar gayi
wo zindagii thi zindagi
nikhaarte chale gaye 2
yoon zindagi ke raaste
sanwaarte chale gaye
sanwaarte chale gaye
qadam-qadam pe ham tumhen
pukaarte chale gaye
wo zindagi thi zindagi
chalaa hai raahi pyaar kaa
hawaaon de do raastaa
qasam tumhen hai pyaar ki
hai do dilon kaa waastaa
chalaa hai raahi pyaar kaa
hawaaon de do raastaa
qasam tumhen hai pyaar ki
hai do dilon kaa waastaa
ye do dilon ki bastiyaan
magar bhanwar mein kashtiyaan
ye do dilon ki bastiyaan
magar bhanwar mein kashtiyaan
utaarte chale gaye
utaarte chale gaye
yoon zindagi ke raaste
sanwaarte chale gaye
sanwaarte chale gaye
qadam-qadam pe ham tumhen
pukaarte chale gaye
yoon zindagi ke raaste
khayaal teraa saath hai
aur yaad teri baat hai
milenge zindagi mein ham
abhi talaq ye aas hai
khayaal teraa saath hai
aur yaad teri baat hai
milenge zindagi mein ham
abhi talaq ye aas hai
o soniyaa
o soni soni soniyaa
o soniyaa
o soni soni soniyaa
o soniyaa
o soni soni soniyaa

I have an explanation for the instant tuning in this song – her transistor was permanently tuned into Vividh Bharti! If I remember right, VB came at the same spot and did not need any tuning, unlike Radio Ceylon, which could be heard on 25m, 31 m, and 41m bands! Do I have the terms and the bandwidths right? I think I used to catch it on 25m. I remember the 41 m as having a lot of stations.
I remembered this song only after listening to it today! Thanks for the song and the write-up, Atul!

just finished seeing this movie, i found that this is a climax song. hence all the thunderstorm etc. second thing the thunder storm is emphasising the turmoil Sadhana is going thro at that point & Joy Mikherjee’s difficult quest of a missing Sadhana.
another incredible thing is before the song there is a supposed live relay of the ‘Nakli’ marriage of Azra & Joy. the only thing logical in the whole scene is the tracking of a telephone call that Sadhana makes to wish Joy Mukherjee for the marriage
that explains how she got the right Bandwidth i hope!!!!!
