Today’s song is the last and final song from the film Prithvi Vallabh-1943, making the film YIPPEED !
It was a film produced and directed by Sohrab Modi, for his own banner Minerva Movietone, Bombay. This was a Historical film, which was the strong point of Sohrab Modi. The film’s music credit was shared by Rafiq Ghaznavi and Saraswati Devi. For her, it was the first film after she left Bombay Talkies, where she spent a glorious beginning and her peak years. The cast of the film included Sohrab modi, Durga Khote, Jahan Ara Kajjan, Meena (Shorey), K.N.Singh, Al Nasir, Navin Yagnik, Alaknanda, Sadiq Ali and many small time artistes.

Today, November 2nd is the 128th birth anniversary of the producer-director-actor, Sohrab Modi (02/11/1897 – 28/01/1984) who was one of the pioneers of Hindi film industry with sincerity embedded in his works. What all I know about him through the articles and interviews is that the filmmaking was his passion. He developed his own art of dialogue delivery in chaste Urdu, thanks to his childhood spent in Rampur where he did his early schooling. His dialogue delivery became his hallmark in the films.
After completion of his matriculation examination, Sohrab Modi sought guidance from the principal of his school as to what type of career he should persue. The principal said that hearing to the quality of his voice, he should either become a politician or an actor. He chose to be an actor. In this context, Sohrab Modi shared a trivia that when his film. ‘Sheesh Mahal’ (1950) was released at Minerva theatre in Mumbai, he observed that one of the persons seated in the audience had dozed off. He called the theatre manager to take him out and refund his ticket price assuming that he was not keeping well. However, the theatre manager reported back to him that the person was visually impaired and he had come to the theatre only to listen to Sohrab Modi’s dialogues. Today’s song is from the film Prithvi Vallabh-1943.
The film was made by Minerva Movietone. It was directed by Sohrab Modi, Minerva’s owner.Music was by Saraswati Devi and Rafiq Ghazanavi, along with musical effects by Meer Sahib. The cast consisted of many A grade artists like Sohrab Modi, Durga Khote, Jahan Ara Kajjan, meena (shorey, later),Sadiq Ali (Lion of Minerva), Al Nasir (the handsome Lady killer), Navin Yagnik (mainly action film hero), Amirbai, Alaknanda (sister of Sitara devi), Ranjit Kumari( Second wife of actor Ram Singh), K.N.Singh and many others.

Today’s song is from the historic film Prithvi Vallabh-1943.
This is a real Historic story on which there was also a Silent movie “Prithvi Vallabh aka The Lord of Love and Power”, made by Ashoka Pictures, Baroda (Gujarat) in 1925. Its story was the same as today’s film. The film was important because India’s first woman Director and Producer Fatima Begum had acted in it, along with 2 of her 3 daughters-Zubeida and Sultana. Zubeida went on to become the Heroine of India’s first Talkie film Aalam Ara-1931. After 18 years of the silent movie, Sohrab Modi’s Minerva Movietone made this film again in 1943.

Initially, when the Talkie films started, most of the actors and actresses of the silent era, who could speak Hindi/Urdu and sing a little got entry into these films. Soon many Anglo-Indian girls and actors like master Vithal, who could not speak Hindi properly, leave aside singing, had to be excluded from Talkie films.(Master Vithal who was selected as the Hero for India’s First Talkie film,”Aalam Ara”-1931, based on his looks,Physique and his silent film credentials-over the capable Mehboob Khan- gave such pathetic performance in his Hindi/Urdu dialogues that he had to be shown as Unconcious almost throughout the film to hide his poor diction of Hindi/Urdu dialogues.)
