Darshan do Ghanshyaam
Posted August 20, 2009
on:In my school days, my Hindi textbooks used to contain poems by eminent Hindi poets. One such poet was called Gopal Singh Nepali.
Today, after more than three decades, I heard his name again under unexpected circumstances. In “Slumdog Millionaire”, Anil Kapoor asks the slumdog kid a question- “who wrote the song “darshan do ghanshyam”, the contestant replies, Kabir, and his answer is deemed as correct.
Gopal Singh Nepali’s son watched this movie recently and he was not amused, since this song was written by his father and not by Kabir. He slapped a lawsuit of Rs 5 crore (Rs 50 millions ) on the makers of this movie to either correct the fact, or to get this portion deleted from the movie. He has facts to back him. As it happens, Gopal Singh Nepali, in addition to being a poet of calibre (whose poetry was taught in schools) had forayed into Bollywood movies as a lyricist as well. This song “darshan do Ghanshyam” was written by him for a Bollywood movie. This movie was “Narsi Bhagat” (1957). This song was sung by Hemant Kumar and Sudha Malhotra and Manna Dey in one version and by Manna Dey in another version. Ravi composed the music.
Here is this song that was sung by Hemant Kumar, Sudha Malhotra and Manna Dey. Its video is not available, but the uploader of this song has done a great job in providing some nice paintings of Lord Krishna (Ghanshyam) with this song. The song is very nice and soothing to listen to. So here is this song from “Narsi Bhagat” (1957) which was repeated in “Slumdog Milllionaire” with incorrect credit.
This song also has a lesser known Manna Dey solo version.

Thanks for the excellent song in raag kedar. My record has one more song by Manna Dey & others : Aaj Faisla tere dwar par, mere jeet hai tere har par………………… darshan do ghanashyam. I wish that the second song is also put on the web. Hiox.org has the complete lyrics of both the songs and more.

Dear friends,
Late Shri Gopal singh Nepali ji the famous lyricists of his time has given really peace oriented song though . Hemant da , Sudha ji and Ravi ji has done excellent job. Commercially credit has been taken away spuriously but his son has taken the right action. This is a bad thing. Such hijacking if ideas and works should be stopped forthwith and stern actions ought to be taken against those guilty people of stealing the song or disappearing the name of right man behind it.
