Kishore Kumar, Majrooh Sultanpuri and R D Burman excel in this song belonging to an eminently forgettable movie. Movie may be forgettable, but the song is such a nice one that you can listen to it many times over, without feeling bored, if you have the taste for such songs.

There is nothing much to write home about as far as the movie or the picturisation of this song is concerned. This is one song that is better heard than seen. And as if on cue, the video of this clip is poor, though the audio is good.

What can one say about this song ? Such a nice haunting music, sung with great feeling by Kishore Kumar, and penned with such care by Majrooh. It is good that the song has survived, and in fact grown upon us, unlike the movie.

Song- O hansini meri hansini kahan ud chali pankh lagake (Zehreela Insaan) (1974) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics

O hansini meri hansini, kahaan ud chali
mere aramaano ke pankh lagaake, kahaan ud chali
O hansini meri hansini, kahaan ud chali
mere aramaano ke pankh lagaake, kahaan ud chali

aajaa meri saanson mein mahak rahaa re tera gajraa
aajaa meri raaton main lahak rahaa re tera kajraa
O aajaa meri saanson mein mahak rahaa re tera gajraa
O aajaa meri raaton main lahak rahaa re tera kajraa

O hansini meri hansini, kahaan ud chali
mere aramaano ke pankh lagaake, kahaan ud chali

der se laharon mein kamal sambhaale huye man ka
jeewan taal mein bhatak rahaa re tera hansa
O der se laharon mein kamal sambhaale hue man ka
O jeewan taal mein bhatak rahaa re tera hansaa

O hansini meri hansini, kahaan ud chali
mere aramaano ke pankh lagaake, kahaan ud chali
kahaan ud chali, kahaan ud chali

Translation
(Note: Hansini, that is female swan, is called pen in English. But not too many people may know that, and my translation would appear pompous if I translate O hansini meri hansini as “O pen, my pen”.
So I have retained the word Hansini in my translation)

O hansini, my hansini, where are you flying off to
On wings of my aspirations, where are you flying off to

I can smell your flowers in my breaths,
I can feel your kohl in my nights

I have been just about keeping the lotus of my heart above water
Your Hansa is wandering aimless in the lake of life

O hansini, my hansini, where are you flying off to
On wings of my aspirations, where are you flying off to

I remember seeing this film in the 70s.
Early days of Rishi Kapoor.
The movie is quite forgettable – but this song stood out even then.
I don’t remember it being very famous or popular – just very pleasant to listen to. But it was noticed enough to have a remix made – and then of course it has a new level of exposure.

Very nice song. Typical Kishore/RD combo song.

It was a forgetable movie. It was panned very badly by critics, but even they had nice words to say about this song.

And this song certainly rises above the mediocrity of the movie, and stans out so well.

“This is one song that is better heard than seen.”

I disagree. Moushumi Chatterjee looks incredibly beautiful in this song in her white dress (that’s why she is called “Hansini” in the song).

I and my friends used to go see this movie in third class (it only cost 1 rupee back then but it was still a lot of money for us teenagers). We would leave right after this song was over. Moushumi had cast quite a spell on us!

The rest of the movie is about as bad as a Hindi movie can get.

Long live Kishore Kumar and RD Burmen

the film was a remake of kannada hit movie “nagarahavu”, however it could not beat the original as far as performance of the artists is concerned. However RD music as usual was in top form. Very much liked this song.

It’s pure magic. Mermersing with it’s lyrics and golden melody. I remember, i had delayed going my terminal exams of Standard 9 because on the road side, on radio this song was on and i could not stop listening it.

beautiful song..n translation as well 😉

The translation has not understood words like
लहक रहा. A more scholarly translation would be:
Come! Your floral bracelet, exudes perfume into my breaths.
Come! Your kohl shimmers, in my nights.
